Yeah I'm very skeptical about the direction they're taking this. Normally I'd be super hyped about it being open world, I love open world games. But for a Metroidvania? It feels like a culture clash. Metroidvanias work based on collecting upgrades over the course of the game to make you stronger and stronger. It's difficult to imagine a working gameplay loop where you can also collect such upgrades in any order, the design and combat is built around what upgrades you have at that point. Also it looks so barren and empty, which does fit with Metroid's isolation but doesn't make for a fun video game. I'm on the fence about this one, I definitely need more convincing. This game could really use a dedicated Direct in October/November to give more detail into how the open world will work.
Anyway, game looks great, looks like the different regions of Viewros are all over the map with an interconnected central world area to go through, which isnt too different to Prime 1 and 2, with a more central area. Of course, it'd be nice if the areas were also interconnected between themselves for fast travel, which they likely will be.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
So, within the first 6 months of Switch 2's life cycle we get a new Mario Kart, Kirby Air Raiders, and now also a Metroid motorbike game? As someone who doesn't care at all about racing games or motor vehicles, that's a bit disappointing, though thankfully there are more interesting first-party games coming to spend my money on.
I'm also very skeptical about any open world-ish idea for Metroid but with how quickly they showed it off, it makes me think its less open world Metroid and more "what if there was actual gameplay when traveling to planets in Prime 3". Or "what if Arkham City was a better compromise with the structure of Arkham Asylum". Which I actually am for both of these, Metroidvanias are generally better the more they feel connected. (which is why I was iffy on that aspect for Prime 3 and strongly against how it worked in Castlevania: Order of Eclessia) And in general I doubt its gonna remotely overshadow the more traditional Metroid parts. (as long as we don't go full Arkham Knight, we're good)
If they abandoned the tight structure of a Metroidvania entirely, I'd be incredibly critical of it tho. If I were to be cynical of it, it'd be closer to feeling like a justification for why its new and more modern in the same way why I think Link's Awakening has that dungeon maker mode purely to justify a Gameboy remake being 60 dollars. It doesn't need it, Metroid should embrace being Metroid, forever, but if its an enjoyable extra part of the game, I won't necessarily complain either.
@kkslider5552000 I also think the motorcycle segments are more of a transition between areas, like Kingdom Hearts’ ship segments or at most something like Wind Waker’s open sea. There’s gameplay there because why not, but that’s not where the real meat of the game is.
You can’t control the way others talk to you, but you can control the way you talk to others.

If this follows the format of past games as well as Wind Waker, this would mean it will suddenly become way too much the focus before you get to the end game. (at least in the original, in the HD version its arguably my favorite part of the game)
