Metacritic whitelists which official reviewers to allow and puts a weight on them for trustworthiness. Wouldn't they just drop a website or whatever if they were publishing reviews without playing the games?

See, this is an AI-related video game issue well worth castigating. An AI-written review is by definition a fraudulent review, since the website is claiming to have reviewed the game when they have very much not. And its not like their AI of choice has played the game, either, so you can't even claim the AI is actually doing the work instead. Its basically a cheaper, assembly-line version of the classic "writer fakes a review using Google".

I mean, they should, absolutely, for the same reason they should downgrade or blacklist a publication caught having a human fake reviews. I'm skeptical about whether they actually do that in either case, sadly.
