Installed the Nintendo store app, because I like the convenience of the psn one, already.

Uninstalled it after a minute. They literally just open the browser when you tap a product, what a pointless waste of storage space lmao

@Dom_31 I don't think many people use it as a store, it's just cool because the app lets you see your daily playtime for every game you own on recent Nintendo devices.

@Dom_31 Yup I did the same. I thought it was gonna be like PSN app too. Too many Nintendo apps anyway.

@FishyS That's why I have it. And I can see which games on my Wish List are on sale.

Don't forget to update your NSW2 camera! It's not just Joycon 2 and Pro Controller that got updates.

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate we have Yakuza 0 on NSW2 with English voice acting, just got Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 on NSW2 today, with a brand new entry Yakuza Kiwami 3 soon to be released.

I remember the day we were questioning why no Trails games or Yakuza games were on Nintendo. Today, we have 10 Trails games (if counting Ys vs Trails) already released in the west, with several more incoming, and 3 Yakuza games on NSW2 in 5 months, with a 4th soon to be released.

Times have changed. If you ever complained about these series not being on Nintendo, imo, you should back it up with action and support these titles.

Metroid Prime 4 looking insanely good! Only 3 more weeks...

Bought Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2, and dived in to Yakuza 0 Director's Cut last night, putting about 3 hours in so far. I'm impressed with how gripping the story is. It's sucked me in, and suddenly I realize why these games are held in such high regard.

I do not get the hype people have for Prime 4 right now. Like I guess the graphics look great, but graphics are not the end all be all for a video game and gameplay wise it feels like Tanabe has forgotten what makes Metroid Metroid (Retro too but we know that most of the people who made the original trilogy have left the company and it certainly shows, but Tanabe has less of an excuse). I mean open world sections? NPC escorts? Really? Are they hellbent on making this game as un-Metroidy as possible? The design philosophy for this game is so daft and pretty much the exact opposite direction this game should be going in. The psychic abilities seem cool I guess, but everything else they're doing differently from other Prime games feels like a net negative. Tanabe and Retro feel utterly clueless here.

How do you know what direction the franchise “should” go? That’s quite the statement, especially when you haven’t played the game yet or seen full reviews that can address how all this stuff plays out.

And I speak from experience.

I HATED the direction they took Zelda with BotW. I still do. But I can suck it up and admit that I’m in the minority.

… and, in my moments of clarity, I can sometimes sit down and even enjoy playing parts of BotW and Tears.

I’m glad they’re taking some chances. Let’s see how it plays out.

How dare they have motion controls, and dialogue, and frequent NPCs, and escort missions....and an open area between each area. Imagine if it was just a level select! All of that combined would be good awful!

What? Prime 3? Wassat?

And Prime 3 ended up being an excellent entry point into the series and a beloved game in its own right. And it's not like Metroid has Samus be silent all the time, or alone all the time. Adam exists. She talks in Fusion and Dread. And people love those games.

Prime 1 had its problems, mostly around the Chozo Artifacts. Prime 2 made changes by deciding you needed ammo for beams and an obtuse dimension swapping mechanic. Prime 3 had dialogue, cut scenes, escort missions, a level select with no interconnected stages....

So Prime 4 having dialogue, escort missions, a big open area connecting the regions (there Is likely fast travel between them without it) and Galactic Federation troopers all about isn't new, or weird.

Heck, given the premise of the story, Samus is just kinda there. The fight between the Federation and Sylux has been building for several games now. It'd be weird if they weren't all over the place.

I do think they went out of their way to make sure the graphics on Switch 2 looked really good. Nintendo wants to showcase their hardware. As for the other aspects of the game? I think we'll have to wait for reviews to really know what proportion is traditional metroid versus other things and how well the new and old ideas mesh together.

Same with me. I am not a fan of BotW/TotK, but I can't help but acknowledge that it is an extremely good game and I do enjoy parts of it. And I adore EoW which fundamentally wouldn't have existed without both experimentation and also ideas which partially came from TotK.

Metroid Prime 4 looks pretty fantastic to me. I don't mind that they are putting in escort missions/NPCs - it still looks like it retains the core of what made Prime one of the best games I have played. The graphics look incredible, especially since it is a SW1 game. The connecting desert looks like it will be a lot of fun to explore. For me, I see no issues, only hype. The things that are bugging other people in their previews really don't bother me at all.

This may be a short term fad but it honestly intrigued me as a neat discussion point- sharing 10 games that defined you as a gamer and led to where you are now (for me, that would be "a NSW2 gamer").

That's a great question. I think my 10 games would be:

The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Rainbow Islands (Amiga)
Gargoyle's Quest (Game Boy)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
Psychonauts (PC)
Mass Effect: Andromeda (PC)
Gone Home (Switch)
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
I Was a Teenage Exocolonist (Switch)
Baldur's Gate 3 (PC)

I'm not really concerned with people who "don't understand the hype" for Metroid Prime 4. If you dont understand it, then remain confused. If you arent interested, then dont play it. Why the incessant need to insert yourself into discussions concerning a game you're not interested in? Let people have fun without trying to rain on their parade anytime they express excitement for something you personally can't fathom or comprehend.

Metroid Prime 4... muah! Chef's kiss. I love everything about it from what I've seen. Will likely be one of the best games I play this generation. And possibly destined to be one of my favorite games of all time, just like the prior 3.

Retro never misses.

"You say Metroid Prime is a masterpiece. Having played Metroid Prime 4, does it offer that same kind of experience?"

"A million percent"

One of the most detailed and comprehensive previews I've watched. The one with Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb is also good.

@Haruki_NLI Is Prime 3 particularly beloved? I haven't exactly seen much praise for Prime 3 aside from praise for the general trilogy. IMO, Prime 3 is the weakest of the trilogy (granted there's some reasons that are more specific to Prime 3, such as the environments minus Skytown being dull slop with too much browns and greys everywhere, but the other factors don't help much either). That being said, I don't really mind most of these and that's not as much the issue. It's the escort missions. Having to babysit an NPC with the strength and intelligence of a 5 year old is extremely aggravating. Also, Prime 3 didn't really have much in terms of escort missions. In fact I think there was only one instance which is the Leviathan Seed mission on Pirate Homeworld. There's clearly much more of that in this game, so they're doubling down on a bad mechanic.

Now I could potentially see some use out of the Federation NPCs, but not the way they seem to be doing it. I do like the idea of Federation NPCs populating the overworld, but not as is with intrusive escort missions. Maybe if the NPCs gave sidequests like "retrieve this relic" or "defeat these enemies" that might be interesting (we could certainly use more in the way of sidequests, suit expansions and log entries were sufficient side content in 2002, but not in the year 2025), but I cannot see the escorts being enjoyable in the slightest (and the previews seem to indicating that no, it's insufferable).

@FishyS The previews are already saying that the escort mechanics are intrusive, so I think we already have a good idea.

Again, focusing too much on the graphics feels like a mistake. It looks nice, but not that much nicer than other Prime games and yet it's more expensive and took longer to make.

@JaxonH Because when I see too many people praising something so evidently flawed, or a single person praising everything regardless of quality, it makes me question their standards. If this is a "chef's kiss", then I shudder to imagine what a mediocre or bad game is. Does it have to be Sonic 06 levels of bad to get any kind of criticism?

I really wish more people would express criticism towards Nintendo or withhold their purchase when they do something bad. Not because I think everyone should be a Negative Nancy, but because I want to see more people hold Nintendo accountable for bad decisions instead of blindly enjoying everything they do (and you in particular come off as that kind of person, I don't think I've ever once seen you criticize something Nintendo's done while you just seem to constantly defend all of their games and everything they do and try to convince everyone that a bad game isn't actually bad). If you just accept everything Nintendo does they won't be inclined to improve their games whereas if you actually hold them to account we can get even better games than we're currently getting.

Oh my gosh lol.

10 minutes into Viewros and they've already met, escorted and dropped off the NPC. THAT'S what ppl are having an aneurism over?! Typical internet

Game looks flawless!

Not to everyone. And obsessing over something so trivial makes me question your standards. And yet I don't feel the need to interject myself. Strange how that works.

"wish more ppl would criticize Nintendo and withhold their purchase" aka "when I criticize something I expect everyone else to fall in line, accept my view as correct and do as I say with their money"

Watched the trailer, and yeah this sure does look like another Metroid Prime game, which is fine by me. The desert looks kind of lame, but I highly doubt it'll be some game ruining issue for me or anything (and if it is, this becomes an accidental foreshadowing moment, which is objectively hilarious.)

Also I figured I'd throw in my picks for 10 defining games. I'll try to provide some reasoning behind them as well.

1. Super Mario Galaxy. I would say this is the game that made me really love video games. It was like magic to me when I was like 8 in a way that is fairly difficult to describe.
2. Sonic 2. The reason I became a fan of Sonic and 2d platformers. I nice two for one special.
3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Before I played this game, I thought I had 2d platformer fatigue. After playing this game, I realized I had New Super Mario Bros fatigue.
4. Breath of the Wild. Similar to Mario Galaxy, this game was just magic to me the first time I played it. And it really made me "get" open world games.
5. Portal. I mean, I just like Portal man. Played both the main games countless times, played the fan-made stuff like Revolution, Stories Mel, and Reloaded, and even played the stupidest game ever made: Portal with rtx.
6. Wii Sports Resort. I know this one might seem like a silly pick, but when I think of games that defined my childhood this might be second only to Galaxy (and I'm sorry if me calling this game my childhood makes you feel old lol)
7. Splatoon. This one should be self-explanatory
8. Forza Horizon 4. I've always been the type of person who doesn't really enjoy a game unless I'm progressing, but this is really the first game that got me to just enjoy hanging out and enjoying the vibes, which is something I need every now and then.
9. Hi-Fi Rush. Yeah I know the game only came out a couple years ago. But it did two things for me. It made me like rhythm games, which is awesome, and also my overzealous love for the game has become a very funny running joke in real life, so that's worth something.
10. Madden 13 on the Wii U. And no, I will not elaborate on this. Just trust me.

Did you not notice that they made cuts in that video? We can't actually tell how long it lasts because they're concealing (probably on order from the Nintendo reps). But from what we can see in that video, for whatever amount of time it lasts... yeah it does not look good and I can see exactly why the media outlets are complaining. McKenzie literally talks every 5 seconds in that clip and has very little of substance to talk about. Honestly I could feel my IQ dropping listening to McKenzie here. We can only hope that it ends up not taking up that much time in the game, but whatever amount of time it does take is time not being spent enjoying the game. Furthermore, when the discourse to a mechanic like this is "I hope it doesn't take too long", that's a sign that you're not enjoyable, and therefore it's not a good one.

JaxonH wrote:

No, no I don't. The issues I point out are more objective, or at the very least things that a wide consensus would not enjoy. Issues like having a low quantity of content and/or high price, mechanics that don't fit the core appeal/design philosophy of the series, or mechanics with obvious issues that few to no people would enjoy. The NPC escorts has issues with the 2nd and 3rd, the isolation and atmosphere is a key part of the appeal of Metroid, numerous fans have stated that over and over again and if you've played a Metroid game yourself you understand it. And having NPCs yammer on every 5 seconds spouting information that most people would find useless is just something no one would find appealing. So no, it's not trivial. That's a pretty major issue.

Also it's rich for you to say calling it a flawed game is subjective when just above you called it flawless in a fairly objective manner. Quite the double standard you have going here.

JaxonH wrote:

No, I have no issue with people buying genres I don't like for example, what I have issue with is poor judgment of value, core appeal, and repetition.

Also I would very much like to know, is there anything you DON'T think is good or have any kind of criticism towards? Because I don't think I've seen it. It feels like every single time Nintendo or its game does something controversial, you're always on here trying to defend it and saying it's actually good.
