Honestly the previews of Prime 4 I've seen have just made me more hyped about it. There are some elements of it that are giving me Skyward Sword vibes and I certainly don't mean that negatively because I consider Skyward Sword one of the best games of that era. When you combine that with the fact that apparently the central area supposedly behaves a bit like Hyrule Field? Can't complain about that

Another thing I kinda noticed. There was a DYKG video a while ago talking about the history of Retro and some of the cancelled game ideas they had. I can't remember the specifics but they had one that was somewhat Portal inspired they had some footage of. Some of the Psychic abilities in Prime 4, they seem somewhat similar. So that's interesting

The confirmation that the desert section with Vi-O-La is certainly a sigh of relief (I'm not thrilled to have it to begin with, but I suspect it'll be at least tolerable now knowing it's not too intrusive on the traditional Metroidvania gameplay), it's just that now there's another potential issue with the NPC companion/escort missions. It seems like there's been so many moments in Prime 4's marketing that's like this, just when they manage to provide some answers that builds the hype, it's immediately brought back down with a strange decision that makes the game feel worse.

@Bolt_Strike Prime 2 is considered the black sheep of the three (It's always the second thing in a trilogy isn't it?) since it's mostly dark areas, a lack of conventional Metroid upgrades, your beams need ammo but you only get ammo for one if you use the other, the puzzles being somewhat obtuse, Dark Aether just being.....brown. and dark.

And apparently the bosses are a bit rough too. Except Quadraxis, everyone likes that.

And hunting for the keys is rough. In Prime, the game tells you rough ideas of where they are and with one or two exceptions makes it kinda obvious. In Prime 3, you don't need all the Energy Cells, and you get enough just playing the game normally.

In Prime 2, no hints for the Sky Temple keys, no hints, you gotta wander around Dark Aether with your Dark Visit in the evening see them....ugh.

But long and short, every Prime game has a different feeling, a different focus, and unique gameplay to the others. And that's good.

Nah, I've seen some criticism for Prime 2 but I've also seen some praise. And it's my favorite TBH, I love games that put twists on old areas like that. Sure it's reusing half of the game, but you explore it differently in a way that feels fresh.

Haruki_NLI wrote:

I have never seen any complaints about Prime 2's boss design. The only thing I've heard mentioned about Prime 2's bosses is that the Boost and Spider Guardian are extremely difficult in the original version of the game.

Actually you do get some hints. If you scan the pillars in Sky Temple Gateway you get clues left by A-Kul as to where her fallen comrades are. Find them and then the keys are in the Dark World counterpart of that area.

Yes, but they've all stuck to the series' core appeal of Metroidvania gameplay through isolated, atmospheric environments. This is the first game to truly diverge from that.

Check this out. I think I may have discovered something- need opinions here to confirm whether I'm tripping or if I'm onto something.

This map (which is incredibly well designed btw) shows "Marker" with "Y" next to it, indicating you can mark the map. That's something I think Dread did, but no Prime game ever has.

I wonder how many markers you can use. Maybe just one, to use if you want to go somewhere other than the objective and need a reference point?

@JaxonH good find! I wonder if it means that we have the option to change a sections color? It’d be great if we could pinpoint a specific spot…
Also - theX for radio has me wondering if communication with the npc’s will be more of an optional thing after initially finding them?

I think it's important to switch things up and get a little experimental, but i still get what you're saying. Especially if you're a die hard fan of MP 1&2, and most of the other entries that follow the traditional isolated formula.

I'm a far bigger fan of MP3 myself. When that dropped on Wii back in the later 2000's, it was a Mario 64-like experience for me thanks to the Wii Remote pointer aiming Controls(Set to advanced), Nunchuck & Sensor bar. There was nothing else like that at the time. And thanks to the INcredible Blur-free motion of those large 32-36" FullScreen modern-esque Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT's that graced the mid 2000's(Using component cables)I was getting blur-free motion clarity that no modern OLED is capable of and zero latency. At least Prime 4's 120fps mode will cut down 50% of blur and get your 50% closer to what CRT is capable of.

But back to motion controls. Here we are with Quest 3 & PSVR2, and now Steam Frame(Using Ring-less VR controllers with a traditional Controller(s) lay out)with VR controllers that completely out do and surpass what the Wii Remote Plus is capable of. You can't even compare it. But we're talking different platforms. Comparing a TV Screen to being in three dimensional space are two completely different things.

Now if only a PCVR mod existed, so i could experience Prime 4 Beyond in VR with the upcoming Steam Frame + Steam Machine. That would take the Prime series to whole new heights, crank up the immersion, wow factor, intensity and fun x1000, just like PSVR1 & PSVR2 has for Resident Evil 7 & Village. But it aint happening. Not until Nintendo dips their toes into VR with their next console in the earlier 2030's. Which I'm sure they will once all the barriers and kinks are ironed out. Flat screen gaming has a hit a wall of dimishing returns. Graphics don't impress or blow anybody away anymore, we've come to far. If Nintendo released a Switch 3 with PS5 Pro+ graphics, HD Rumble 3, an Improved camera and whatever else, it would be completely unexciting and underwhelming. VR is the next logical step as an 'option' for those that enjoy it. it's the future for gaming, that will coincide with flat/TV, handheld & MR Glasses gaming.

3rd person Mario Kart VR or 3D Mario(Imagine 3rd person VR with Super Mario Odssyes's Lakeside Kingdom), Overhead VR/top down Zelda, VR pokemon Snap, Prime 5 VR. So many exciting possibilities, and the technology itself by 2033 lets say will be that much more amazing. They'll be <100 gram light thick VR/MR glasses with wireless connectivity to your Switch 3(Using either a tethered pocket puck, unless the tech improves further, which it will, to the point where they've found a way to reduce the weight while retaining all of the tech junk in the visor instead of resorting to the tethered pocket puck idea.

Valve is on the right track with Steam Frame. They managed to get it 75 grams lighter than Quest 3(Which launched around 2 years ago), and it's wireless dongle connectiivty has minimal latency & image compression, to the point where people are saying it's nearly indistinguishable from a tethered display port connection. It also has a whopping near 90% Stereo Overlap. PSVR2 is 85%, but Quest 3's is only 70%. Overlap meaning how realistic you perceive steroscopic 3D depth perception, which is the entire point of VR. I'm super excited and enthusiastic for the platform. Quest 4 won't be out probably until 2027, we've got Steam Frame early next year, and who knows, maybe Sony will get it right next time and release PSVR3 for PS6.

Ahem. And I'm still waiting for Blumhouse enhanced cinema to finally come out for Quest 3 in Canada.
Itching to see how Black Phone is like when it's environments bleed into your own and all of that crazy VR/MR stuff happens through out the movie.

I'm just heartened that they've let so much third party footage get shown this far before release. Nothing speaks confidence in the game engine's performance like that.

Even if what happens later in the game remains a bit of a mystery, at least we know that it'll run very well.

Oh most certainly experimentation is needed sometimes, especially when you've had multiple entries of the same thing, it starts to get stale and boring. Thing is though, there's a right and a wrong way to experiment with an IP. You can't just throw crap at the wall and see what sticks. It should stay grounded in the core appeal of the IP or you're going to end up scaring away longtime fans and fracturing the base. These kinds of experiments fall firmly into the wrong way of doing things.

I mentioned some ideas earlier in this thread and in the Prime 4 thread that would be more in line with the series' core appeal I think. Sidequests to earn currency to buy upgrades and customization options, going for a more Mega Man-esque progression system with the Metroidvania, experimenting with different types of upgrades like a larger scale combo system, experiments like that would be more in line with Metroid's core appeal. This game's experiments are more likely to divide the fanbase than expand it.

I definitely agree that VR is the inevitable future of the industry. It's just a matter of the technology being cheap and accessible enough to be widespread. And Nintendo is the most likely candidate to sell VR to the wider public, they thrive with these kinds of technologies. But until that point, they're better off experimenting with how to make Metroidvanias more accessible and universally appealing, not with diverging from the Metroidvania genre.

Hot take maybe..... I don't mind having parts of the game being built around having a marine following you for a section

Hotter take: In all liklihood, Prime 2 and 3 have issues that affect those entire games negatively more than this will. The first time playthrough of Prime 2 can be rough, especially the original release with its occasionally obnoxious difficulty spikes. Even during that first playthrough it was BARELY below a 9/10 and got to that point on later playthroughs.

I at least get the concerns with the bike, which is not some compromised open world thing, but could just be kinda repetitive and underwhelming, especially if you try to 100% it. Y'know, like Wind Waker, the game everyone loves now even though it is very repetitive for large chunks of the game and I can't imagine wanting to 100% the original version once the HD version existed. (I'm dreading even doing the triforce hunt in that version ever again) But that's considered an all time classic. (the fact that the sailing and doing 100% is somehow arguably my favorite part of the HD version is why I don't think I can judge the bike as anything right now)

I also think I'm just past either being THAT invested to a game pre-release or expecting nearly any game to be perfect. Or maybe whatever hype I still have is with Kirby Air Riders, a game that still feels like its less likely to be a critical darling despite all the recent fan hype just based on what both games inherently are and are going for.

About time I got involved with this thread ... what with having ORDERED A SWITCH 2 TODAY!! 🙋🏼‍♂️

Just wondering about screen protectors, because all the protectors I've used on Switch 1 have been the thin film type, but when I look for Switch 2 protectors on Amazon, everything is calling itself glass. Do the glass protectors scuff-up where the dock perhaps rubs?

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@gcunit Congratulations! Welcome to the club and enjoy!

As I was unaware of the issue, I didn't get a screen protector right away for my OLED and after half a year or so the dock or something in the dock damaged the screen …

Therefore the first thing I did when getting a Switch 2 was ordering the official carry case with screen protector from Nintendo alongside it. Everything good so far, but this time there is also no visible wear on it like with the OLED. So I think they improved the dock in this regard, but I also wouldn't want to take any chances. I think the official one is the film type you describe. I have no experience with the ones made of glass on my Switch and don't know if they differ in thickness …

@gcunit nice, welcome to the SW2 club! What games are you playing first?

For screen protectors, I picked up one from Amazon (2 actually, one for me and one for my son), it’s glass, and I’ve had zero issues with both putting it on and dock scratches. It feels like there’s extra room in the dock, and the system fits in with a little extra space. Can’t remember which brand I picked up, but it was my first successful self-application of a screen protector on any device. Get one with a kit that helps with the application.

UpsideDownRowlet

@gcunit Congrats on the new Switch 2!

As for the screen protector, I've been using one (the amFilm brand screen protector, to be specific) since launch and I have had no issues. Most of these protectors I designed to be highly scratch-resistant, so it shouldn't be a problem.

"well it appears I am upside down. what ever will I do?"

Currently Playing: Hades II, Pokémon Scarlet, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Super Mario Galaxy

@gcunit
I got the AmFilm glass protector, and boy am I glad - probably within the first couple weeks I noticed a weird distortion on my screen when I was playing in handheld. I thought my screen had a couple dead pixels or something that I hadn't noticed, but when I ran my hand over it, I noticed it was a scratch with a little bit of depth to it, and it was distorting those few pixels.

Woof. That would have been my actual screen without the protector. I don't know if it happened from the dock or something else (my house can get a bit crazy lol).

So, yea, for like 20 bucks, get a protector lol

rallydefault

gcunit

@jfp @Lazz @UpsideDownRowlet @rallydefault Thanks for all the replies and indulging my hype.

I've been a bit put off by glass screen protectors because they seem so prone to shattering when used on phones, but on reflection they do seem to maintain a smoother ride for fingers than the films do over time, so I've gone for a pack of glass protectors.

@Lazz Thanks for asking which games I'm down for 😊 - I've ordered the Mario Kart World SKU. Kinda strange anticipating my first play of that. MK8 has been my favourite game for 10 years, but MKW's somewhat lacklustre reception among players has left me expecting disappointment. But I cling to the fact that I tend to appreciate the basics of Mario Kart more than some, so I remain hopeful I'm gonna love it regardless.

I've also ordered Donkey Kong Bananza and Cyberpunk 2077, and will be pre-ordering Kirby Air Riders later today. Next on the list to order is Metroid Prime 4 - I'm gonna pre-order the Switch version as it's really a Switch game in my head, but I'll be paying for the Sw2 upgrade instantly for the best of both worlds, 'cos those clean Sw2 visuals are too good to miss. Also looking forward to the free Red Dead Redemption upgrade in a couple of weeks.

You got any personal recommendations for what I should be eyeing after that?

@gcunit Hades2 is also a really solid purchase, and I believe a physical version is due for imminent release (perhaps this week?) if you're a physical collector. Otherwise it is readily available now on digital download, and a very reasonable price point!

Nice to see you've taken the plunge on Cyberpunk 2077, it remains (IMO) the best technical showcase for what your new device is capable of

One final recommendation - Star Wars Outlaws.... but hold fire for a few weeks until it inevitably will go on sale, as it nearly always the case for Ubisoft-developed games. It is absolutely the 'Ubisoft mold/formula' but with a really solid Star Wars world, and great characters + a few unique mechanics. If you even like StarWars just a little, this is a solid purchase
