@FishyS oh god a good, in depth story will be really fun. I keep wanting to compare this to kid icarus: uprising, but I doubt the story will be as good as that one...

Ah, see, I had a couple of the Game Boy Advance Pokemon games, but I really don't play them anymore, so I traded those puppies in for a few hundred bucks. Didn't have manuals are the boxes anymore, just the cartridges.

But my Switch stuff? Yea, never trading any of these games.

...until I do lol

@FishyS
Used physical is the way to go. I just got Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar for S2 on eBay for 40 bucks plus tax.

This may be a short term fad but it honestly intrigued me as a neat discussion point- sharing 10 games that defined you as a gamer and led to where you are now (for me, that would be "a NSW2 gamer").

The fact 7 of the most influential games in my life are Nintendo games probably has a lot to do with it. 2 are Capcom games, 1 is a Square Enix title. All are on the original platforms I played them on.

Would be interested to see what others' games are. Probably would explain why certain ppl lean a certain way or another.

Thing is, I feel like 10 cant tell the full story. I kinda need an extra 10 to paint the full picture. Been playing since the late 80's after all.

Um... I was playing Luigi's Mansion and I got a message saying that the left joy-con's rumble has been disabled because of "prolonged use." Has that happened to anybody else? I didn't even use it for that long, so it is kind of weird. I don't think it's anything bad though, I'd imagine it needs a break or something.

As for the ten influential games that defined me as a gamer? I've been into this hobby since I was a child in the 90s, and we had the SNES and N64 back then. I'd say they are...

  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario All-Stars
  • Yoshi's Island
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • F-Zero
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Super Mario 64
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Mega Man X

So yeah, I would say platformers are my favorite genre overall, and I've always liked adventure and racing games too. Heck, I don't think just 10 are going to cut it... here are ten more!

  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • F-Zero GX
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Mario Kart 8 (+ Deluxe)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Splatoon 3

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World

Hmmm, 10 games that define me as a gamer, that goes back to the late 80s, so...

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge (Amiga)
Bruce Lee (C64)
The Last Ninja (C64)
The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Zelda: A Link to The Past (SNES)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

It's really hard to limit myself to just 10, so here are a few honorable mentions.

Mario 64 (N64)
Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Sonic 2 (Mega Drive)
Ultima VII: The Black Gate (MS-DOS)
UFO: Enemy Unknown (MS-DOS)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Viewpoint (NEO-GEO)

I probably needed a few more years to select 10, since I'm only in my late teens and still have my whole life ahead of me and all, but here I go with my 10:

Mario Kart Wii (first Nintendo game I ever played, and it was always with my dad and younger sisters)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (first Nintendo Switch game I ever played, the family enjoyed this one a lot years ago but that kind of thing typically doesn't happen anymore)
Pokémon Blue (played it on my mom's Game Boy Color back in 2018, it was my first Pokémon game)
Pokémon Violet (my favorite game of all time, and the story and characters mean a lot to me. If it weren't for seeing the 4 main characters becoming friends and me wanting to try out something like that, I might have remained a shut-in for much longer, keep in mind that to this day I'm still learning how to get along with other people but I am making progress)
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (my first Zelda game I ever played back in 2019, and it's just an awesome game. There need to be an official, not locked behind the Expansion Pack release on Switch 1 / 2 so I can play this awesome game again)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (my first Smash game, and one the family would often play together)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (my second favorite game of all time, and also my current most played game at almost 250 hours)
Animal Crossing New Horizons (just an awesome game in general, and also the main reason for me getting my own Switch, now I can't imagine living without my own console 🤣)
The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening 2019 (my very first video game that I ever owned myself. Until this one, I had always played the family's games)
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 (I haven't even played this one yet, but this game and the other mainline Neptunia games that I was really looking forward to getting their American Switch releases canceled (still pissed at Nintendo of America for doing that almost a year later, btw) made me start becoming more interested in physical media again even though I've been exclusively digital for several years, and caused me to seek out getting a PS4, which is my first ever non-Nintendo console)

Honorable mentions:
Super Mario Odyssey
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Formerly ShieldHero

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Pokémon Violet
2: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3: Animal Crossing New Horizons
4: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
5: The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

@Kellvasion nice. I see a Amiga title. Lotus turbo challenge 2. Hours and hours just listening to the intro music.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Difficult to limit this to ten, but here goes …

Breakout (C64)
Turrican 2 (Amiga)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Amiga)
Shadow Warriors (GB)
Super Stardust (CD32)
Mario 64 (N64)
Perfect Dark (N64)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Metroid Prime 2 (GC)
Hollow Knight: Silksong (Switch 2)

Phew, there are so many more … and also a big shoutout to the PSVita, such a great machine that kindled my love for indies.

Respect for those DK entries. The original DKC trilogy was a massive part of my life but I only wanted one entry per franchise represented.

@JaxonH Thanks! I am quite glad I grew up with those games myself. I like the sequels as well, especially DKC2.

Yeah, limiting it to 10 makes it trickier. For me if it was a longer list I would've definitely included more DKC. I would go even further and say that DKC is not just an influential game for me but it was also influential in my life and career. As it was that trilogy that made me want to become a software developer

But the limit was 10 games so, DKL was a kind of foundational game for me. It was the game I got with my GameBoy alongside Mario & Yoshi. I know it inside an out. Had to be on the list

So.... honorable mentions:
Donkey Kong Country 2
Donkey Kong Country port to the GBC
Sunt Race FX
Mario Tennis on the GBC
Mario Kart DS
Pokemon Gen 4
Age of the Empire 2
Halo Combat Evolved
Skyward Sword
Super Mario Galaxy
OGame

This seems like fun, albeit a little difficult to narrow it down to 10. I'll try. Limiting it to 1 Zelda game for myself, or that would be most of the list. These are not really in any order besides number 1.

1. Wind Waker, either GC or HD. I love both
2. Kirby Air Ride
3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
4. Pokémon Pearl
5. Hollow Knight
6. Halo 2
7. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Was honestly really hard to choose between this or AC on the GC)
8. Mario Odyssey
9. Bloodborne
10. Monster Hunter Rise

This was hard! Half of the list is Nintendo games, which is no surprise. I have lots of love for the GameCube era, which was what I played on a lot growing up. There are some honorable mentions like Amazing Island, which really isn't a great game, but I absolutely loved as a kid and have fond memories of, and Super Monkey Ball 2. And of course, while not really honorable mentions, I could replace a lot of these with Zelda games, as it's my favorite franchise, but I felt that would be less fun/challenging.

That new page is hilarious. If you search games which are fully non-compatible (e.g. labo 4) they simply don't show up in the search.

If you search for games which require switch 1 joycons (e.g. 1-2 Switch) it says 'Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch' without mentioning joycons.

If you search anything else, it just gives the single line already listed in the eshop which is usually accurate but not always.
