@FishyS That'd make sense, and fall in line with how the 3DS was treated. The big January 2017 was a Switch only showcase, it'd make sense to only have it be focused on that
I don't think Nintendo is going to do many "cross-gen" games as people think personally. They understand the fact that people buy consoles specifically for exclusive experiences that are made for said consoles
I think you guys are broadly right but also I think you're also kinda ignoring the unprecedented position we're in here. For Nintendo specifically. With previous generational transitions if the game came out on the previous generation hardware it was either not playable at all on the new hardware or locked in some very restrictive compatibility mode. With Switch -> Switch 2 that won't be a thing
I mean sure, obviously for the launch of the hardware they'll focus heavily on Switch 2 exclusive content. And I think it's fair to say that Switch 2 exclusive games will become the vast majority of first party releases very quickly. But I don't think it damages Nintendo at all if Wind Waker HD or something comes out both with the Switch 2 version being the same thing but at 4K with HDR

Historically Nintendo has only ever done cross-gen releases for one reason: When they had already promised a title for one system before the game got delayed. I can't think of any other instance where Nintendo deliberately released something for their previous system.
That much is true as far as cross-gen games but they most certainly have released games on the previous systems for other reasons. Hell, look at how many 3DS games we got after the Switch launch, USUM, Metroid: Samus Returns, the two Mario & Luigi remakes, and some Wii U ports. I think they do previous gen releases for one or more of the following reasons:
1. As you said, they promised a game for the previous generation but it got delayed to the next generation so they make it cross gen.
2. The developer is relatively unskilled/lacking resources and not ready to move on to new hardware (we saw this especially with developers that tended to release games on handheld only and struggled to adapt to large jumps in power such as DS -> 3DS and 3DS -> Switch).
3. The game is relatively lower selling and not as graphically intensive, so it wouldn't benefit much from being exclusive to new hardware while making it multiplatform gives it a chance to sell better.
The DS -> 3DS transition is somewhat of a good example because, speaking for myself at least, it was one of the few times when I personally still engaged with the previous platform after getting the new one. Via backwards compatibility admittedly. But I think the main reason I did that was because the 3DS library was fairly thin in that first year or so and the BC was ok
But when the Switch launched? The Wii U was already a dead end platform and even though 3DS still got support as far as I was concerned it could've easily just disappeared entirely. It was just kinda hard to go back to the 3DS screen size and resolution when I had another portable that could run higher end games at higher resolutions. And the library out of the box on Switch was also solid
........ I don't really think it'll be like either with Switch 2. I think in many ways I'll interact with the Switch 2 more like how I interact with Steam Deck. Obviously there a new games daily and games coming out that push the hardware pretty hard (in the case of the Steam Deck to the point of incompatibility). But also, there are smaller games and also a huge back catalogue. There was a Ubisoft sale on the weekend, they had Rayman Origins for under $5. The game came out over a decade ago, it was never ported to Switch, I had it on Wii but it's obviously only standard def art there. So under $5? Why not. Great little platformer to add to my library.......... what does it matter what platforms it was built for? What does it matter that this game could run on a potato?
@skywake I think there'll be some cross-gen titles, but I feel like most of the brand new games will primarily be for Switch 2. We won't see another 3D zelda on Switch 1, or another 3D Mario on Switch 1. It won't be like how Sony was, where they keep releasing games like God of War on PS4 despite the console being outdated at that point in time. Most of their big heavy hitters won't be coming to Switch 1 I feel.

@VoidofLight I really hope Nintendo lean into the new tech.
I suppose Sony and XB had a slightly different landscape to navigate with PS5/XBSeries... chip shortages, pandemic nuance, general scarcity of consoles.... Also, the leap between PS4 -> PS5 wasn't quite as substantial as what we expect from Switch1->Switch2, so I suppose cross-gen for Sony was a bit of a no-brainer in times of short supply.
Switch being 8 years old now (!) means Nintendo really need to come out the gate swinging with some great S2 exclusives, alongside some solid 3rd party ports.
The choice of double releases in June resulting from how there's usually a double month somewhere in Spring/Summer like March 2017 (triple month with BotW + 1-2-Switch + Snipperclips), June 2018, July 2019, March 2020, May 2021, June 2022 (was also planned to be April 2022 with Advance Wars + Switch Sports), June 2023, May 2024.
I think Switch 2 launching in June is unrealistic but if it somehow did, I think the launch would look like the example I gave.
@Grumblevolcano those are some pretty good deals in the sales, LM2 and M&DK for $30 and other titles for $40 is nice. might finally pick up odyssey 😹

@Grumblevolcano Gosh, one million combined laps in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament? That's a crazy high number, haha. It's been a while since I played 8 Deluxe, so good excuse to come back to it. Also it looks like the eShop wasn't mentioned in the discount part, but I would imagine the same thing would apply to the eShop as well.
I don't think there's going to be any significant gaming news for MAR10 Day. My guess is they'll say something multimedia/merchandise related. I expect any kind of Mario game announcements to be held for the Switch 2 Direct.
@Bolt_Strike I agree, and to be honest, I think that's all MAR10 day ends up amounting to even if we did get a couple of release dates last year.
The most I can see is a teaser poster for the Mario movie sequel and maybe an NSO game but I think even that's a stretch as I can't really think what's left!
I think at most on the games side of things for a Mar10 Day presentation, we'd see a NSO drop (e.g. GBC SMB Deluxe, GBA Mario Sports) and ingame events (e.g. a Mario themed Splatoon 3 Splatfest or a Tetris 99 Maximus Cup).
Last year had the advantage that there were already 3 upcoming known Mario games (Princess Peach Showtime, TTYD remake, LM2 HD) with 2 of them without release dates. This time there are no already announced upcoming Mario games, I know there's a lot of assumptions that the Switch 2 Mario Kart is a real game but for all we know it could be a tech demo like Twilight Princess 2 for Wii U.
@Grumblevolcano@Novamii Yeah no way in hell that Mario Kart game is just a tech demo. The backlash towards that would be immense and Nintendo knows that would be deceptive. Plus, as I said to you in the Launch Games thread Grumble, Mario Kart has had a huge drought and desperately needs a new entry. The last main series console entry was 8 years ago with MK8D and the last NEW console entry was a whopping 11 YEARS AGO. Mario Kart needs its next big thing ASAP. I could buy the idea that they've been working on it for a while and simply held it back for Switch 2 because of MK8D's sales. The drought has been very weird. Before MK8D we were regularly getting games every 3 years. To go from that to a large 8 year drought is extremely jarring. I've been feeling that we've needed new Mario Kart since 2020, but they absolutely are out of excuses to not have one at this point. If this were to just be a tech demo I'd never forgive Nintendo.
Also yes, an NSO drop would make perfect sense for MAR10 Day. Nothing more than that. Wait until April 2nd for anything like a new 3D Mario, a new Mario Sports, etc.
@Grumblevolcano Given that Nintendo has been holding off on Mario Kart since 8 came out, and how every system gets one new Mario Kart game, this is definitely not just a tech demo. Especially given that it wouldn't be the best showcase if it were a tech demo. The Twilight Princess tech demo looked super good because it was pushing the Wii U to its absolute limits (which wasn't indicative of the actual game experience on the console as most games didn't do that, or literally weren't able to do it).
Meanwhile this Mario Kart game looks better than what the Switch could run, but doesn't look like something that pushes the Switch 2 to its absolute limits. It 100% is the Mario Odyssey level announcement for the Switch 2.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@Novamii@Bolt_Strike@VoidofLight I don't think it's a tech demo, the point I was trying to make was that because Nintendo hasn't officially announced it as a new game that they wouldn't have it in a Mar10 Day presentation.
@Grumblevolcano I agree with that much, but saying it could be a tech demo is the wrong way to put it, that was misleading. It's a teaser that they're not ready to fully reveal.
@Grumblevolcano I don’t see why they wouldn’t wait for Mar10 Day for NSO like last time, could they be moving this out of the way for a bigger Mar10 Day announcement?
