Nintendo prolly went “You want guest characters in MKW? Here you go.”

In all seriousness we don’t know if guest characters are actually being added later on as DLC or not.

I wanted to post this as it's own topic, but I think there's a cooldown for new accounts so I'll just post it here:

Mario Kart World looks so incredibly good, but what's with the graphic design? The UI looks really, really bland, as if it was from some third party shovelware kart racer or something. Compared to Mario Kart 8, it's just so disappointing. And the logo is so much worse, something about it is so... off. It looks 100% A.I generated (I know that it isn't, relax), and it doesn't look 'Nintendo' at all.
Everything else about this game looks so good, but these little points really hammer the experience down a few pegs for me.

@Tayrailbridge Not really sure I can understand how the logo doesn't look very "Nintendo," it's a pretty vague way to describe something. Would you be willing to elaborate?

"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."

Tayrailbridge

@N00BiSH Perhaps I exaggerating a little bit, but the logo is still pretty odd. The globe looks like clipart and the paintbrush font looks kind of unfitting. From Mario Kart DS onwards, the MK logos pretty much all have an emphasis on slick, futuristic(?) styles, whereas MK World's logo looks a bit too cartoonish, but I mean it is a cartoon kids game.

@Tayrailbridge Well, as someone who dabbles in graphic design and cares way too much about this sorta thing, here's my take: 8 was kind of the endpoint of the slick, Ridge Racer-esque aesthetic that games DS through 7 established, and World is clearly trying to find its own individual style away from that, so the logo is reflective of that artistic shift. The minimalist globe probably didn't have the most thought put into it - it mainly exists to serve as a backdrop more than anything, but it's fine - doesn't distract from the part you're supposed to be reading. As for the subtitle, I'll admit the brush typeface isn't quite gelling with me as the game's primary menu font, but for the logo it serves its purpose and helps gets across the "off-road" vibes the game is going for.

"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."

Tayrailbridge

@N00BiSH Yeah, that's what I was thinking about the subtitle too, it has a sort of off-road look. I suppose you're right in how the new design reflects the new stylistic direction of the series, but I don't really like that new direction ;(

Tayrailbridge

N00BiSH

@Tayrailbridge that's fine. Everyone's gonna have their preferences, and personally, I don't think they're gonna continue with this specific aesthetic with every Mario Kart going forward.

@Tayrailbridge Definitely agree, the font feels somehow more sterile than the sleek one. It is more "fun" but in the same way as the one oversimplified stylization of human characters that every company is using now. Outside that, though, I think it looks super nice.

Some very interesting stuff in here but just wanted to highlight this:

You're not only rearranging the music but also revamping the mechanism for how the music is selected and played right? You said you created a lot of musical tracks, but how many pieces did you end up with?

Asahi: "Altogether, over 200 for the "jukebox." These are all brand-new arrangements, and we also did live recordings, We prepared pieces from quite a wide variety of musical genres. I believe those who are well-versed in video game music, as well as those who aren't, will enjoy listening to them."

loool, the P Switch mission in the Nintendo Today update just now! Cow having to drive between a huge herd of mooing cows before the time limit runs out. Argh, I'm so looking forward to it and so pleased it'll have so much single player content!

The new interview made me confirm my opinion that the biggest problem with Mario Kart World's price is not the idea that it isn't worth it, but that the Nintendo (and AAA in general) "full price or else" approach to game prices is bad and dumb and unnecessary. (and cynical when it comes to their big franchises) That's not the only problem, but it is the one that bothers me the most. Not only because the cynicism does the opposite of make me want to still regularly buy Nintendo's games, but because I'm worried for some of these games they'd rather add more content for the sake of it, and make all their games bloated for no benefit instead of releasing a 40 dollar game sometimes.

But yeah, obviously the game was in development this entire generation. That was a very likely possibility to me when I looked into the people who made Arms and they were not showing up in any later Nintendo games after years and years, it would've been more surprising had Mario Kart World not been in development that whole time.

@kkslider5552000 At this point, I think the 80 USD for World is mainly just so that they can sell people on the Bundle. Would not be surprised if Nintendo thought of it as a way to gain back the cost they spent for developing the game for around 7 years- while also getting people to spend 500 USD on the Switch 2 instead of 450.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

kkslider5552000

@VoidofLight That might've been part of it, but I think a lot of it is they just saw the open world addition to Mario Kart, the trend of next gen being 70 dollars, TOTK also being more expensive since it had more content than its previous game on the same system (when World was originally planned for Switch 1), and just decided "ah, that makes sense".

I at least understand why it could be a reasonable price in that context, so at the very least it annoys me much less than when they're like. "Yeah, DKC: Returns is totally 20 dollars a better remaster than Metroid Prime, its not because DK is more popular at all~!" "Yeah we totally needed to release 3 Pokemon RPGs in one year because we planned all the merch and anime that way, we couldn't have planned that an open world Pokemon would need more time at all, we are very smart at Gamefreak" "Every single 2018 game should have mediocre free updates instead of being delayed to be a complete game, because we did it right once with Splatoon so now every game can be Splatoon, right?"

Maybe since it was in development for 8 years, they are charging ten dollars for every year of development.
