Thinking about this "mouse" replacing touch screen, that could mean that we see more ports of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

They could, but I hope they don't go back to the Lemmings style gameplay for new games, that was always unfun and difficult to control. I'd rather they expand on the DK 94 style they used in the first game for future entries.

I've noticed that DK94 doesn't seem to be available right now. I'm wondering if it is being cleaned up / ported / remade for re-release. That would be cool!

As for the stylus controlled Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, I've got Mini-Land Mayhem! and I enjoy playing it. I'm just thinking that if the gates to add DS games to NSO is open, then these Mario vs. Donkey Kong games would be nice additions.

Really curious how this could work out for something like the Switch 2. I've never cared for mice in games - feels too much like using a PC for work for me, and really takes me out of the experience. Only exception is games where it's basically a necessity, like Civ VI.

I'm the same way. I can't get used to WASD + Mouse. But my kid and her friends say they prefer this. ?

More thank anything I wonder how this would work for a system attached to a TV. Surely you need a desk for a mouse to be effective?

I'm thinking that you just need a little flat surface to make the mouse work. So someone will make a wrist-strap with a flat surface on it that you can strap to your other wrist, and then you just hold the mouse up to it. Or . . . someone will make a Joy-con strap attachment that includes a flat surface to use with the mouse.

Neither of you ever used a mouse on a sofa? My sofa fabric has a bit of a texture to it, so it's not like it's a smooth surface even, but I can get away with using my mouse directly on the seat.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

+1

For that matter, I guess we could just put a simple mouse pad on the sofa as well.

That might help out too.

I'm kinda surprised that people are getting stuck on this bit TBH. I guess I'm a bit of a nerd and someone who has always been into home theatre PCs and the like. So to me when I hear people talk about how the mouse will work I just think of the times I've used a mouse not at a desk. Coffee table, standing up with a wired mouse and using it on my thigh, walking around with a laptop and a wireless mouse, couch arm-rests are good

If kids on the SNES managed it with a wired ball mouse in the 90s then I'm sure we'll be fine with a wireless optical mouse

I hope Slay the Spire gets updated to support the mouse functionality. Game controls/feels sooo much smoother on mouse than with the buttons/joysticks

@gcunit and @skywake these suggestions are really bad for your wrist and/or back. Also I don't have room on the sofa myself!

Doom, Fortnite, and games requiring Aiming will benefit from the mouse feature where the left hand control movement and right is aiming or vise versa for those with left hand usage. I think that is why both controllers have optical sensor for Right and Left handed users and this might be a good think for those with disability as well being it's a mouse gesture.

I think people are maybe thinking about this input as behaving exactly like a mouse input maybe a tad too much. It's the obvious use case but I don't think it's the only use case

You know how in Echoes of Wisdom there was that huge list of options you had to scroll all the way through with the analogue stick? Well, you now have a pointer in 2D space you can quickly move and with HD rumble you have haptics to give tactile feedback. So imagine you're in the middle of the action and then you load up the menu to swap to a different copy. JoyCon down on a surface, boom, fast scrolling

Those dual-analogue lock puzzle things that have become a cliché in most adventure games. Well, imagine that but now you can move on a 2D plane with one hand while rotating in 3D space with the other. Again with haptic feedback. All of a sudden that lock-picking mini-game got a whole lot more interesting

And obviously, local multiplayer isn't really a thing for mouse centred games. It existed somewhat on the Wii with pointer controls and in the arcade with two player lightgun games but outside of that? Not a lot. And a mouse is not quite the same as a pointer. So I'm sure there are possibilities to explore there that haven't really been explored that much

@skywake I don't really see how the EoW example is any faster or more convenient than using the analog stick (then again, I was one of those people who had no issue with the menus in that game). Can't speak to the lock puzzles as I've not really played many games that utilise them.

shrugs I dunno, again I'm curious. But I'm struggling to see the value added outside of a slightly different way to control things (in which case, I'd like to also see generic mouse support as on the other consoles). I just hope it's not something forced on us.

If you look very closely at 1:16 in the reveal, it looks like the mouse function is added with an accessory with a strap.

I looked more closely, and I hadn't noticed the button up top before, so thanks haha.

Also! WTF is the paddle lever beneath the Z buttons?! How did I not notice those? Oh they're just the magnet release buttons nvm

Do you think it will support regular mice via Bluetooth?

SwitchForce

I think it will support both mouse and BT feature they aren't going to loose the BT with Switch 2. Just think you can Fortnite, COD, Shoot'em games that is best with mouse. Any PC games that has mouse feature this will be a boom for those PC developers to bring to Switch 2 because now with two USB-C can attach a keyboard and mouse Joy-Cons and considering both has mouse feature who need a keyboard. The left/right depending on if your right or left you can assign commands to each side and become a truly immersive. Oh, wait Nintendo VR is coming....

Also, I was iffy on getting another Mario Maker this gen, it feels like Mario Maker 2 underperformed and they seemed to be shifting back to proper 2D adventures with Wonder. But with the hints of the mouse functionality? Tough to argue we won't be getting another Mario Maker now. A game like Mario Maker is practically begging for mouse controls, if they can get one ready relatively early in the console's life (like within the first 3 years) that should help sell the console and might do a bit better in sales if it's lucky.

@Bolt_Strike I don't think Mario maker 2 really under-performed. It sold more than the total mario maker 1 counting 3DS and Wii U together and is the 23rd best selling game on Switch. They haven't updated the sale data for a while but a recent financial release said it continues to sell and gave some indirect numbers implying total sales was around 9 million. It sells less than mainline 2D or 3D Mario but it sells far more than some of the other mario spinoffs like the sports games or the rpgs. I do think Nintendo was hedging their bets by releasing New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Mario Maker 2 during the same year, but both games ended up being somewhat evergreen so I can't imagine they won't continue the maker series. I do agree the mouse controls will be a benefit though.

A game which could have used a mouse even more is game builder garage. I'm hoping they will make a sequel for that as well but the first game only sold about a million and was honestly fairly unpolished so who knows.
