My only complaint about the original Switch were the joy-con. My worst experience with a Nintendo controller...ever, and I have played a Virtual Boy. So, I believe some specs have leaked about Nintendo opting a different mechanism for the Switch 2 analog sticks, but I can't be sure? I may have misread, but I thought I saw that Nintendo were opting for potentiometer, like in PS5 controllers.
Unfortunately, that wouldn't fix the issue. Rather than the joy-con incurring drift after 400 hours of use (like in the original joy-con), the joy-con would incur drift after about 1,000 hours of use instead. My PS5 Slim controller didn't last a year before it began to drift.
Somebody, please tell me I read wrong and Nintendo are opting for Hall Effect analog sticks.

I wonder if older Joy Cons will be compatible with the Switch 2? ( Like Wii's Remotes Being able to be used on Wii U )
But since they did say Backwards compatibility is there in SOME way shape of form, i guess the new ones are either very similar, or you can use the older ones for Switch 2 to play them on the new System.
Either way having a use for the old ones, even if they eventually drift too, would be nice.

may we meet again.

I think they will, but you won’t be able to put them on the Switch 2 since its Joy-Con slots are gonna be different to accommodate the magnetic Joy-Cons
You’d probably have to buy a Joy-Con charging stand if you plan on using the original Switch’s Joy-Cons on Switch 2

I don't think anything has leaked yet. There are some patents out there from Nintendo for different analogue stick mechanisms and a lot of "leaks" throw in Hall Effect sticks. But I don't think we have anything concrete AFAIK. IMO, I think any of the "leaks" that mention it at all are only doing so because it's a big talking point and Hall Effect is the new hotness
Personally I'm not toooo worried about it. I would think they're probably going to be more robust given that they lost a class-action lawsuit on JoyCon drift. It'd be fairly bad PR to not try and resolve the issue in what will be a huge JoyCon redesign. But even if they don't, after market stick replacements is a fairly robust market these days. Partially thanks to the JoyCon dramas. And for all their faults the original Switch JoyCon were VERY reparable
If they drop the ball on the JoyCon I'll probably just upgrade them to nicer sticks this time around

Good chance the stick build will be different. Will it fend off drift? Only time will tell but im sure Nintendo has looked into those failures even if they can’t eliminate them 100%
Hmm.... ok.... lets go from the top. Think of a volume control slider, what it essentially does is give you an analogue physical input for a number between 1 and 10 (or 11 if it goes that far). But for character moving in a game that's not super useful because you don't just want to go backwards and forwards, you also want to move left and right. You also want it to automatically centre. An analogue stick is, basically, two volume sliders attached to springs and connected to a stick
So then the question is how to you build a volume control slider? The simplest way is to just put a metal contact onto a bit of resistive tape. The further along the tape you go? The more resistance there is. And that's basically how most analogue sticks work. The problem is that doing it this way has two things rubbing against each other. So they wear out over time. And the smaller and more sensitive it is? The quicker it wears out. That's when you get the analogue sticks starting to give you unreliable inputs aka drift
Hall Effect sticks use a different method. Instead of using resistive tape it abuses the way that magnets interact with electricity. Because the sensor doesn't rely on something physically being in contact with other things? It's less influenced by wear or manufacturing variability and so therefore tends to last longer and is more accurate. But they're marginally more expensive so have become less common over time

@skywake After the Joy-Con drift lawsuit, is Nintendo trying to find a way to make sure Switch 2 Joy-Cons don’t have the drift issue, especially if Hall-Effect sticks are one way?
@MrCarlos46
I think it's more a case of JoyCon drift being a bit of a PR mess and making the issue more front of mind for consumers. So it would make sense for Nintendo to make moves in reaction to that

Personally, I had five sets of joy-con incur drift inside three years.
Yes...it's a problem.

Perhaps it’s something people are doing differently that drift even comes up. I never experienced drift in the short time that I had my lite or now with my oled. I however believe that this will get better with the switch 2.
