I mean, I look at the leaks. I'm thinking, "screen won't be OLED, SoC could be smaller, on-board storage memory could be bigger, and microSD express card sizes for memory expansion are too small." My current OG Switch OLED is still doing just fine. Am I out of line for feeling that...if I could wait a few years after the launch of the Switch 2...it'll be worth the wait.
Fair to assume Nintendo will iterate on the Switch 2.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,377 games (as of January 13th, 2024)

I'd prefer it to have an OLED screen but I'm not prepared to hold off on playing every new first party game until an OLED model is released so I'll just get one at launch and then probably still upgrade later.
I do not care for OLED screens. Last week I changed the thermal paste of my original 2017 Switch and it is still running like new.
One of the best things to happen this//last generation is that Nintendo did not give me a reason to regret my purchase with the new model. Just like the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.
couldn't care less, just release the new system already the switch is so old that anything is better than it. if they release a better version of the next system and im interested enough, i could just trade it in.
The two big rules of tech purchases:
1. There will always be something better later. If you sit around waiting for the improved thing you'll do nothing but sit around waiting for the new thing. As soon as there's a V2, if it even happens, you'll be saying the same thing about whatever is next on the horizon
2. Buy for what you will use now, don't "future proof". Because odds are by the time you fill up that storage, need that extra feature or want that extra power there'll be something better and cheaper than what you can get now
If on day 1 there are games on Switch 2 you want to play? Get it. If not wait. And for storage I wouldn't worry about the price and capacity of cards yet given you don't even have the device yet. You don't need 1TB of storage on day 1

@Magician Yeah, I'm not looking forward the the idea of buying the launch switch 2 when we know it will likely be the inferior console within 1-2 years by a new OLED version of switch 2. That is kind of BS.
If they just made a tv-only switch 2 console option, I wouldn't have to worry about not-getting an OLED screen at launch.😁
@Magician I always wait now. Never buy a console at launch any more. There is usually a better iteration not long after, plus I have so many games I could skip generations entirely and not play them all. Of course, that’s a different, personal collector disease problem.
@Magician@WoomyNNYes@Nancyboy I mean, OLED Switch took more than 4 years to arrive so waiting doesn't seem too viable unless you simply don't want Switch 2 games.
Do what I do: buy it upon availability and just bring it home. Then, give it a day or two in your possession (unopened if that’s the policy) and if you’re not getting a nagging buyer’s remorse, keep it! The only console I returned after bringing it home was the DSiXL (but now I wished I’d kept it, lol)
I mean, OLED Switch took more than 4 years to arrive so waiting doesn't seem too viable unless you simply don't want Switch 2 games.
It's possible Switch 2 could improve performance on some Switch 1 games as well.
And the OLED didn''t improve anything at all if you're a TV gamer, so no sense waiting.
And imagine the Direct's possible software announcements:
New Mario at launch! New Mario Kart at launch! New Donkey Kong at launch!
GameCube, Wii, DS, 3DS added to NS2O!
The only console I returned after bringing it home was the DSiXL (but now I wished I’d kept it, lol)
Going on from this now that I think about it I probably regret not buying stuff more than I regret buying it. That might just be a reflection of how I tend to be with purchases generally though. Scrolling through my brain thinking of purchase/non-purchase regrets..... not just gaming
I regret being "too cool" for games as a teen saying I didn't want a GBA or GC or anything
I regret not hunting down GameCube games for the Wii during that generation
I regret getting a laptop rather than a desktop as my main PC in the late 00s
I don't regret getting the Wii U but I do slightly regret using it as a primary console
I regret getting the 3DS XL, I should've waited another year for the New 3DS
I very slightly regret not getting a New 3DS when they were clearing them out in 2017/18
I very slightly regret buying a UHD BluRay player over the similarly priced at the time XBOne S
I regret buying my current laptop which.... I honestly don't use that much at all....
I regret not getting the Switch OLED earlier
Best one for last. I picked a motherboard for a PC I built around 2014 specifically because it had an NVMe slot. I probably spent another $50AU or so for this motherboard over one of the cheaper ones that lacked it. Problem was, at the time NVMe SSDs were super new so this was a "future proofing" thing. The first NVMe SSD I got was in 2019..... for the PC I built in 2019.... on a new motherboard. I did re-purpose that 2014 PC and I got a lot of use out of it but I never used the NVMe slot I paid extra for
Based on the upfront cost of hardware alone, Switch is probably the most value per £ I've got from any gaming system. And I bought the Switch at launch, later got a v2, and then got an OLED at/near launch. No regrets really.
I think Nintendo would really have to mess up the Switch 2 for me not to get it at launch. Lack of an OLED screen is a shame but not a deal-breaker. And if I end up using it nearly as much as the original Switch I'll probably get the mid-gen upgrade as well.
@Magician
And that issue is going to be compounded if they go too heavily with games that are playable on Switch 2 and the original for awhile.
Honestly, I'm getting it at launch almost 100% certainly. But sadly, I'm just not that excited for it. It's just another Switch with more power and is so big it's kind of impractical to take around with you anymore... yay, I guess?
I have been gaming since the end of the 80s and have never once gotten a system early doors (the earliest was the Game Gear which I got for Xmas a few months after it was released).
I am planning on getting Switch 2 day 1, simply because I never have done that with any system and I’m not sure how many more generations of consoles we will even get on the future. That is unless of course if there is clearly no reason to bother that early.
In terms of later updates, I play 99% on TV, so things like a bigger screen, OLED or better battery are not an issue for me. I held out for the V2 Switch and have no regrets; as lovely as the OLED screen is it is not going to be as good as gaming on a big TV, which is how I would use it and presumably that’s going to be the case with the Switch 2.
The only issue is if they did a ‘pro’ model that was significantly more powerful. That’s unlikely; Nintendo may slim down a system but that’s usually as a budget option later in its life (NES Jr, SNES Jr, Wii Family edition and Mini). In fact, these all lost features of the originals (NES and SNES JR were both limited to RF out only, Wii family lost GameCube compatibility and the Wii Mini lost that and all online). It’s really only their handhelds that get better as time progresses. So really it depends on which pattern they follow: condole or handheld.
I think Microsoft and Sony have lulled people an into false sense of step by step improvements within a generation with the XBOX One and PS4. However, those were only really done as the launch models of both were anaemic and underpowered, that required a boost to keep them viable. Look at them now; Sony has gone for a ridiculously priced, niche Pro model and Xbox have only tweaked physical to digital (as that is clearly what they want us all to do) with no pro Series X. Most people don’t seem to realise the Series X IS the pro model to the Series S standard model…
@skywake : I also regret not hunting down GameCube games during the Wii era (I don't have a single one). I've procured an official GameCube controller via the Wii U bundle back when, but for now, I'm content with being able to emulate GameCube games on PC instead (which I can play with the original controller).
I'd like to get three more for multiplayer, though I can't see myself making very much use of it.
My first Nintendo console was a DS, and I have a handful of GBA games for it, but I regret not buying more, including all of the Gen III Pokémon games (I only have LeafGreen and Emerald).
Porygon did nothing wrong.

@Gamecuber I wouldn't expect a more powerful Switch 2, just a cutdown version. Smaller SoC with better battery efficiency, an OLED screen, etc.

For me it will be decided by the some sort of combination of the following, I suspect:
The Day 1 launch game/s.
The inclusion of any features that provide significant improvements to OG Switch games.
A Day 1 price that doesn't feel like it's exploiting the hype.
Some other killer feature we don't know about.
I didn't need a Day 1 Switch, I could have played Breath of the Wild on my Wii U, but a 10% discount on the bundle swung it for me. Absolutely no regrets, March 3rd 2017 is a day that will live long in my memory.
But I'm not expecting Switch 2's Day 1 to be as monumental as Switch 1's. The hybrid dream has already been realised, and Breath of the Wild is pretty hard to top so soon. I don't need more games or more gaming devices, so gimme a reason that forces my hand.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
Alot will depend on how much will it be. Also how many AAA games will come for it. If they have BG3 those RPG players will buy it in a heart beat. The rest will have to save up if it does hit the 450usd prices.
