Something like Streetpass would actually work far better on smartphones than on portables, not just for the far wider audience, but because it's on something people carry around every day.
As for the app itself, eh. It's not for me, I don't think it was intended for me either and I don't know if my years-old Galaxy Young would be able to run it properly. If it's on tablets I might try it just to see what it's like, but from what I've seen I'm indifferent. It'll be interesting to see how it performs though.
It looks like the worst choice they could've made after announcing they were getting into mobile "gaming". It looks like mobile "social networking". Why is this any different than Miiverse or even Facebook? Because there are questions that "encourage you not to be so shy"? Well, guess what? Miiverse and FB are full of questions people ask and answer, and they also technically "encourage people not to be as shy" because it's easier to talk online than it is in person.
I'm sorry, but the idea just seems completely lacking in not only originality, but, most importantly, fun. It's like Nintendo is really wanting to try social networking and figured this is the perfect place because it's less risky than putting out a game centered around it because if THAT's crappy, that's what they do. But they're new to mobile gaming, so nobody will really care if their first "game" is lame.
A serious way to look at this is: If you came online today and read about this game from a company you'd never heard of, what would you think about it? All of this "it looks cute", "it looks charming", etc. I STRONGLY feel comes 100% from the people that just basically trust Nintendo and know pretty much everything they do always atleast has SOME redeemable quality about it. "Charm" has been a very popular one the last few years since Nintendo has played it so super duper safe that their recent library isn't as fun as they've been in years past. But, hey, atleast it's all "charming".
I'm a huge fan of Japanese games, for many reasons, chief among them being the fun quirkiness of the style many are presented in. Nintendo in the past have been masters of tightrope walking this super quirky, but still accessible and crazy fun line. But, with the Wii U gen, Nintendo has, for the most part, abandoned that awesome middle ground they previously mastered and they seem to only be releasing 2 types of games:
1.) Incredibly quirky and out there things like this and Tomodachi Life that are almost too original for their own good because they seem to think that "different" automatically= "good", when it doesn't, so we get something extremely niche, at best. And if you don't find it fun whatsoever it's atleast "charming", which basically is just another way of saying "not fun but cute and with good, heartwarming intentions so you can play with your family"
2.) Super duper safe style games that remind you of their glory years when you were a kid. NSMBU, NSLU, DKC:TF, Kirby & the Rainbow Curse, Yoshi's Wooly World (I, admittedly, haven't played this one: Do I really need to??) Seriously, THIS many 2d platformers? Using the Link to the Past map almost exactly for LBW? Happy Home Designer? UGH!
Where are the fun, original ideas (minus Splatoon. This game doesn't hold my interest, but I recognize that just because something isn't for me doesn't mean it can't still be great, and Nintendo seem to have hit a homerun out of the park with that one.) I am just starting to wonder if Nintendo is even capable of putting something out that totally blows me away and is new and fresh and makes me feel like they are completely changing the game (no pun intended).
It has been quite a while since that happened.
Agreed with everything you said.
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Miitomo, in short, is a joke. I very much agree with @LetsGoRetro on it, and I feel like Nintendo has absolutely no idea what to actually present to the mobile fray. I said it from the beginning, and this "game" seems to go into the exact direction I expected Nintendo to slip off: they try to enter a market filled to the brim with complete oversaturation, where some of the most stupid ideas and practices turn out to be the most successful ones, and where the average attention span amounts to that of a rhinoceros.
Trying to catch a young audience with what amounts to Tomodachi Life: Facebook Version is the dumbest path they could take, as nothing that app offers has anything to do with what Nintendo does on their consoles. You won't find such a game there, much less a community - MiiVerse is more of a cesspool of self-entitlement, and some nice art. As such, most consumers who actually bite on a Nintendo console because of this will feel like complete fools.
@Kaze_Memaryu: By that logic, Miitomo is a lame concept that can be successful.
The problem with streetpass is that the system needs to be on inorder to activate it. Since this isn't the problem on phones, having a concept like this can work. After all, this is more of an experiment to them with the simple fundamental of risk and return.
The thing that wonders me is what microtransactions can they do for an app like this?
Gah, the amount of people not understanding this is so frustrating. It is not a Facebook competitor, you can even sign in to the app with your Facebook account. It looks Tomadachi Life had a baby with Street Pass and it will be popular with young kids and women. Will it attract them to the NX? Probably not but it is worth the effort.
Anyone expecting a game that was more than a companion app or glorified advertisement is a fool of the highest order. Nintendo has been upfront with their mobile strategy but for some reason people were expecting something big. Nintendo is only putting out 5 games by March 2017 and none of them are going to be full-fledged games. Their purpose is to get people a Nintendo Account and hope it can attract them to the NX, why is that so hard to understand?
Yeah, I think Miitomo is bad in every way. It fails as a game since it isn't one, it fails as a social media thing since that is a saturated market, it fails as a revenue tool since it probably won't make much money, and it fails in the eyes of fans and investors. What more could you not ask for?

As a social media tool, it has a critical flaw that OF COURSE Nintendo would make.
You are limited to your friends. Now I hope that what they mean by this is that you can add and reject people as you wish as your "Miitomo friends", but I have a bad feeling this will be tied to My Nintendo, in which case this is a disaster.

@iKhan: You realise that the New Nintendo account allows you to login via Facebook and Twitter right? I think it would be a bit strange if they allowed that and didn't allow you to link with those contacts. Most other services I've used which allow a Facebook login do it so they can access your friend-list and make it easier to link up. They have that data at their fingertips, you'd assume that they'd use it.
