@CaleBoi25 what timing, I just got that from the mall yesterday, first time ever playing it despite getting a deluxe wii u near launch (it was pre-owned i think, it was the only way my parents could afford it at the time)
surprisingly fun and there definitely are some songs i recognize from other places

Even though it's Prime 4 week I still think Zelda is more likely.
It's also the DS and Wii's Japanese anniversary and those are under represented on the app so far.
I'll go with Metroid Prime Trilogy (despite my gut protesting), Twilight Princess and Wario Ware Touched (strangely absent series so far).
I too will jump on the bandwagon of Nintendo Land having great music. Such an underrated gem of a game in general!

Alright, fine… I’ll play along now with three guesses even if it’s three more ways to be wrong. Can’t deny that this is a little fun.
Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The first one is a glaring omission with good timing to finally be added now. The second still works as a Retro Studios game and we haven’t had a new DK OST since the start of the year, not counting a few Bananza tracks. And it’s been the anniversary of the last one even though it’d feel odd to skip over the first game.
oh, three of them? kinda gonna have to stretch here, but..
super metroid. well overdue, we haven't had an ost from a retro console in a good while, and it would fit thematically given prime 4 comes out this week.
kirby super star (+ ultra?). similar reasons as super metroid, and i feel there's been just long enough of a gap between kirby drops for this to work. if they're feeling generous they could also add ultra in at the same time, save us a week.
yoshi's woolly world. here's the extra-stretchy one. wii u drops have been veeeery sparse, the ost isn't absurdly long, and yoshi rep is very thin. i think mario could do with a break.

@Grumblevolcano honestly, i would've thought they'd save the 50th event for something slightly more special. i highly doubt they have many more of these cups in them...

I wonder if the Nintendo Music and Tetris 99 people are the same team. Perhaps they are getting ready both a Kirby and Metroid theme and simply didn't have time to do a music drop on the normal schedule.
Or the other theory is that the Nintendo Music dev is just one random person in a basement and they got the seasonal flu this week.

I suspect whoever ordered there to be a Kirby Tetris 99 didn't even realize it was the 50th cup.
In terms of future cups? I wouldn't be surprised if we got a prime 4 one. Also, Nintendo uses these as a fun and relatively cheap way to advertise both NSO and new games, so I suspect we will get more Switch 2 related themes next year and that they will continue doing these semi regularly this gen.
Let's look at the trend:
2019 - 10 maximus cups
2020 - 8 cups
2021 - 9 cups
2022 - 4 cups
2023 - 7 cups
2024 - 6 cups
2025 - 6 or more cups.
So there is a bit of a downward trend and 2022 was weird, but they don't really look close to running out of steam.
it just makes me think of f-zero 99. like, cool all the stuff they've added, but 90-95% of the game is just bots now. i kinda wish they would at least convert it into something slightly more solo-oriented...

Tetris 99 has a lot of solo modes; I'm not sure why F-Zero 99 doesn't do that also.
I don't recall there particularly being bots in online Tetris 99 matches so out of curiosity I just played a match. Random evening on a monday, no event, and there were only 5 bots out of 99 players. And that was with very fast matching so I suspect the system simply has some wiggle room to speed up matching. Those 5 bots all died very quickly so they didn't even particularly effect the match. During Maximus Cups far more people play than on a random Monday, so I think it's fair to say the game is still popular.

They delayed the release to schedule a tie-in of some sort, probably for either Prime 4 or Tetris 99.
Good theory, they could definitely have music come out during Prime 4 release day.
Probably not quite what you meant, but imagine if they added Tetris 99 itself to Nintendo Music. That would be amazing. It reminds me of when they had F-Zero 99 as a Tetris 99 theme. They should go full meta and add a Nintendo Music App theme in Tetris 99 and then add that music to Nintendo Music.

Actually, he is in a shed, not the basement. Poor guy probably doesn't get sick leave, either. They just hand him his Switch 2 so he can keep waiting for that darn Dire Fire Docks cover from Mario Kart World to play 😂😂😂
(Edit: I mean Dire Dire Docks, but honestly, it's a good cover, so my typo isn't all that egregious)
