I just saw the movie I was hesitant to go because of the critics hating this movie and also because I'm a movie goer and I don't support the idea of a movie with only pure fan service and no script at all, but at the end I was greatly surprised and I loved the movie overall, yeah is not perfect but for me is a solid 8 second best Illumination movie just below Despicable Me. I also totally disagree with Nintendolife review saying that script is all over out of the place and is "bad" it was actually pretty solid, yes is not deep (it doesn't need to) but wasn't a bad writing at all, a movie that is "overstuffed" or "too fast" doesn't mean it has writing issues, and you guys need to be prepared because all animation or kids movies are going to be like this, is a generational thing that now kids want a lot of stuff in very little time, but is basically to just get used to this new dynamic pace, and movies like this will be more appreciated in the future for also older generations.
@FawfulsFury Video games movies aren't a new thing and just because it's based on a game it doesn't mean the same people who saw Mario are gonna see Five Nights at Freddys.
The appeal of Mario isn't because it's a vidya game so all the vidya game players will come out and see it. Mario is in a more unique position of having decades and decades worth of affection and nostalgia where on brand power alone it was always gonna have a big opening. The same doesn't apply to Five Night.
Forgot to mention this one when I saw the movie last week... I loved how the theater vibrated when the blue shell hit. Like the blue shell was asserting itself on the audience and was like "fear me." Anyone else had this experience?
@Vortexeo Not only that, the phone number is real. I actually called it when they first posted the commercial.
The resident Trolls superfan! Saw Trolls Band Together via early access and absolutely loved it!
@Vortexeo Maybe you might have missed it. It was fun to call. As soon as I saw the number I was like "is this a real phone number?" and called. It was worth calling, hope you try to call, it just adds to the fun.

Considering how deep of a cut this is, I hope Tyler just confirms everything else that was arranged for the soundtrack. Really want to know if he actually arranged Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle from Origami King for It's a Dog Eat Plumber World
Okay, fresh of the theater for the second viewing and here's my thoughts.
Positives
. The back and forth quipping between Mario and Peach is very entertaining and adorable at times. Ship! Ship! Ship!
.Peach is capable and tough but doesn't hijack Mario's spotlight and or be the annoying girlboss a la 90% of current shows and movies that has a female in it so any fears from the second trailer is unfounded. You'll enjoy Peach.
. Jack Black's Bowser is threatening with some few funny moments, like the Peaches Song.
. Baby Peach is adorable.
. A whole buncha Easter eggs too many to count and doesn't drag the movie down and is only in the background. Good, have Easter eggs be the sprinkles not the necessary ingredient.
. All the voices play their part well, yes that also means Chris Pratt.
.93% of the characters in this movie was entertaining throughout....
Quirks
I forgot that there was a King Boo there. There was no set up to any of the other Boos in the Dark Land or in Bowser's fortress or in the final battle because he felt misplaced. There was a set up to the King Bom-omb when there a bom-omb in Bowser Fortress. There was no set up to any boos here or even as prominent as the bom-omb in Bowser's fortress.
When Mario tail whipped Banzai Bill's eye, there's no red eye aftermath from that. Kinda missing the Oh crap! Moment.
When Peach tells Mario how Powerups work, she just tells him they're power ups. Not metaphorically, or poetically or any other fancy way for this universe. They're called powerups, straight up. Eh whatever.
This movie has a bunch of slo-mo. Mama Mia!
I would've loved so see some more back and forth for the characters in the movie and extend the runtime by about 5-10 minutes because...
Negatives
.The script could use one or two more passes as the pacing was off at points and 2 characters didn't get their full due. One of which is..
.DK there's a point in the movie where Mario and DK was swallowed by the eel, they argue for a bit and get somewhere, but before that, the eel burps. They stop argue, spot the rocket and they blast outta there. I'm like okay I guess this is settled then. Also could wished for A short scene where Bowser and DK brawl for a bit instead of cutting to him losing. Maybe Peach and Toad fight the army in the final battle too.. Despite these few niggles, DK especially with his back n' forth with Mario is entertaining.
Although there's one character that hasn't go!...grr. okay breathe. You can do this
-Toad! What have you done with Toad! What they've done with my boy Toad is completely unforgivable! HOW COULD YOU!!!
...okay let's take this one step at a time. Early on, when Mario vaults into the Mushroom Kingdom he meets up with Toad and he's basically this annoying, kinda hotshot ready for adventure, Mario kinda but not really friendo, and also the protector of Peach. Okay we got a base of a character here. And when Toad shows Mario around the Mushroom Kingdom, he got this character down. He's annoying but he's entertaining annoying; your good kinda comic relief a la Donkey from Shrek and so forth. So when Peach and Mario set off for the Kong Kingdom, Toad joins in; and that where he basically disappears for 88% of the movie. There is a few lines and animations here and there and he does give Peach flowers on the wedding and is getting squeezed by Kamek but ultimately he disappears past leaving the castle and you'll basically notice that in the first if not second viewing.
There were points where Toad could've brought some presence.
Probably in the Fire flower fields, have Toad talk to Mario about having mushrooms for dinner. And Mario be like
(Mario: "Dude, you anything else besides mushrooms?
Toad lists off different types of Mushrooms and Mario gets sick or something so he runs to Peach.)
or Toad suggest some entertainment while we rest having to pay off that flute thing in the transotion or something have or in the Kong kingdom a convo where
Toad: "He'll show you, he'll beat up DK."
(Mario is being walloped by Dk)
Cranky "Wow, your friend sure is something."
Toad "Who's he? I never seen him before in my life."
Maybe have some more animations, like when Toad covers his eyes when Mario get shoryukened by DK, Toad getting his pan ready to fight off the army when Bowser confronts Peach for a wedding, or hide behind Peach's dress when Bowser is freed from the ice prison or the Brooklyn battle or something, or in a voice do that screaming when the banzai bill homes in on the Mushroom Kingdom.
Ultimately I've would like to have Toad gotten some more presence in the movie as he would gotten the adorable and or entertaing annoying presence the Toads are known for and gotten the pace a bit more smoothly into the movie.
Yeah, you would argue that if done poorly he would be another annoying character but I would've liked for em to try.
Overall, there was a good base for Toad, it wasn't taken advantage of more and that makes me sad.
Phew! Okay, I felt better after that rant.
So anyway, while these problems I listed are hard to ignore, if you're willing to overlook that you're in for a fun time on your hands.
And stay for the the post credits if you haven't already.
I just watched the whole movie and now I can finally judge it almost a month after release. It’s pretty solid, exactly why I expected. Voice acting is great (Chris Pratt as Mario isn’t a bad voice at all, the trailers just made it seem that way. His “wahoo!” Is also really good.) Jack Black crushed it as Bowser, Peach and Luigi’s VAs really match their characters, and Donkey Kong and Keegan sound a bit out of place as Donkey Kong and Toad, but their very well done voice work really makes up for it. The visuals are unreal. It’s crazy how many references and beautiful visuals there are. I understood every reference because I’m a giant geek, but that made the movie more enjoyable for me. The story isn’t bad. It’s very predictable and linear, but it is damn good fun all the same. The fight scene at the end was really really good. You already knew what would happen, but you loved the movie all the same. It’s pace is really fast. It just jumps from one scene to the next and wastes no time with boring setup, the movie jumps straight into the action and character introduction. And for the online critics who said the characters needed more buildup and background and interaction, why the hell would they? It’s the freakin Mario movie. You already know these characters (presumably, unless you’ve been living under a ditch) so you already know just what they’re all about. I’d give this a solid 7/10. Really well done movie. Doesn’t break any new ground, but it doesn’t have to. The Mario Movie makes the pre-established ground it treads much prettier and cooler. Very well done. If you like Mario in any capacity, whether you played his games as a kid on the NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, or whenever the hell you played his games at any point in time, give this a watch. The Mario movie grossed 1 billion for a reason, it’s a super good movie.
