Topic: Switch randomly stopped docking to my TV

Okay. So I've researched my issue like crazy and honestly...it's been pretty annoying. To begin, I've ruled out most common troubleshoots, so try to keep that in mind.

So, I bought my switch roughly 6months ago. New in the box no issues. I prefer to dock my switch. I typically always docked it unless I wasn't able to. Never had an issue. Not even the slightest issue. Then randomly I placed my switch in the dock and it didn't project at all. The green light turned on, acknowledging the switch and charging it as well, but yea. Wouldn't display. So this is everything I did.

1. Checked the HDMI cable/switched out the cable with numerous others/switched the HDMI cord into other ports behind TV/Properly and Safely cleaned HDMI TV port and Dock HDMI port.

2. Tested with various other TVs (Smart/regular HD TVS/old tvs/computer monitors

3. Checked AC adapter/made sure to directly plug into outlet/tried various outlets around house and other houses/tried a friends AC adapter and boyfriends and sisters (also did the whole "placed my switch into their dock which was working just fine prior when their switch was in dock" but again, once i put mine in...nothing. just the green light and the screen would turn off on the switch itself and my tv detects the switch as well. but tv shows no display.

4. Yes I tried the whole unplug everything blah blah and then plug crap back in in a certain order....yes i've tried. I know how much google and most forums are insistent its either that or an ac adapter issue or a dock issue or a tv issue or HDMI issue...yea..I wish.

okay, there's more. oh yes and this next part is going to be hard to figure out due to the new switch and dock just came out and...i dunno. Here's what happen.

My boyfriend bought the new Switch OLED and with that switch he got the fancy new Dock. Well, I was hooking the dock up for him and he put his switch in and everything worked great for him...ya know ..playing his games on the TV and such...making me jealous. And well I took his switch out and decided it couldn't hurt and slid mine into the New Dock....The thing docked. It displayed to the tv. My heart sank. I almost cried tears of happiness.
Until I started playing a game.
Everything was fine...then the TV screen flickered. I ignored it. I could deal with a flicker here and there, but after 5mins of playing a game, ugh...

**Launches game and after roughly 1min of gameplay**
FLICKERS ONCE
**2mins in**
FLICKER...........FLICKER
**3mins in**
FLICKER..FLICKER....FLICKER FLICKER FLICKER....FLICKER....FLICKER

it only starts to flicker after i launch a game (any game) and have played for a min or so.
It just slowly starts to flicker more consistently the more i play.

I've tried so many things except resetting my switch and the only reason i haven't is I really don't wanna deal with the 2 games I've played the crap out of that don't allow uploading your save data to the cloud

idk. thoughts? ideas?

Presumably it doesn't coincide with another event - an update, power surge affecting other electronics, house getting struck by lightening etc?

So if you've tried your Switch on a known good dock and it still doesn't work, that would suggest a hardware failure on the Switch rather than the dock or anything further up the line like TV or cables - possibly a dodgy connection between the internal board and connector given it's intermittent on the OLED doc.

Have you tried a different Switch on your dock to make sure it's OK?

I'd suggest contacting support as it's still under warranty if you've only had it 6 months. Just be aware that if you send it for repair there's a chance it'll come back with all your save data gone. No issue with the cloud compatible saves, but for those that aren't you could transfer to your boyfriends OLED before you send it off and transfer back once it's returned.

@killyertvx If you're going to search internet for Nintendo issues, Nintendo Support virtually always has the solution(granted sometimes it helps knowing the right search terms). If Nintendo Support troubleshooting can't solve your issue, it's highly likely you have hardware failure and something needs repair. That does suck, but at least you know you've ruled out simple troubleshooting solutions.

Since I started answering tech questions here in 2018, virtually every time someone's Switch won't display on tv the solution is "reset ac adapter" - It's a common issue, although I think I've only run into it once since March 2017. I can't overstate how common the issue is, though. So, statistically speaking, if resetting the ac adapter doesn't solve your issue, I think there's a good chance of hardware failure somewhere. If you're someone that leaves their switch in sleep mode all the time, make sure you reboot, or hard reboot (hold the power button for 5-10 seconds). Oddball scenario, with some tv's, the switch may not work in all hdmi ports on the tv. Not all hdmi ports on a tv are equal.

To me, it sounds like your next step is to contact nintendo. If you call them, it's not that tough to get someone on the phone. (I got someone around christmas that seemed like a newb/temp that had to look everything up(sigh). Hopefully christmas volume temps are gone by now, because in the past I've always gotten great help when calling Nintendo support.)

Nintendo Support Search/Contact page

No image/Wont display on TV (this is the page that usually solves the issue. In case you hadn't seen it, but I think you may have done these things already.)

Other results for "no image" or won't display on tv.

Yea, honestly that was my conclusion and not one I was happy with. I was hoping for anything, but the switches own hardware. i have inspected the charger port..like eyeball at least 4 times a day while comparing it to others'. I do know it is clearly not at its finest. I've noticed the charger - sometimes, not that often, doesn't make proper contact to my switch causing me to usually flip it and plug it in resolving any poor contact. With the cord anyways. I cant flip it the same on the dock, not that it would even solve the issue.
I did factory reset my switch today just to satisfy myself and know I tried everything before contacting Nintendo Support. Even though my switch is not even a year old, i don't have a receipt or any proof of purchase or date of purchase just the box and such. I'm debating either getting what id need to fix it myself or throw money at a switch repair service.

But i thank you for your response. I think i knew my own answer but it's helpful to get clarification from people who know what my particular issue and what not is.

Thank you for your response.i appreciate it.
Yea, I've tried two other switches on my dock set up (my cords and such) and theirs work. That's honestly the point when i figured it was my switch itself. I mean it was obvious. Just really didn't want it to be hardware related. I am going to try switching to a different HDMI port, I feel like i haven't directly tried that, but it couldn't hurt. Nonetheless its most likely some hardware/connection issue within my switch and that's my life. I will contact tech support, but sadly i have no proof of purchase or purchase date (umm receipt) I assume that will prevent me from being able to take advantage of any warranty. It seems I'll most likely have to send it in for repair or I dunno. Ugh.

Thank you though! Your reply was helpful and I appreciate it.

@killyertvx Did you test other non-OLED tablets with the dock? My dock is having the same issue. Both of my Switch tablets get black flickers, but the OLED tablets work just fine. Maybe there is a firmware issue with the dock?

Demise is underrated.
