I heard the only way you could get 7.1 is through the USB port.
First I noticed when I plugged in my USB headphones the sound went out on the main TV.
second I can't tell if it's in headphone surround or if it's in regular surround or stereo.
(scratch that in the last 5 minutes I found that the Nintendo does recognize a USB headphone but it won't let you set it in surround mode. And according to the eBay seller the headphone is a surround lpcm 7.1 to headphone decoder. If it wasn't only five bucks and it didn't kind to do its job, which it might anyway if Nintendo defaults USB headphones into geadphone surround mode.)
Third why isn't headphones around an option? Nintendo practically resurrected headphone sound during the Super NES era. Before that it was called binaural recording in the 1910s.
