Hey whoever may be reading this, today I bought an eShop code off Amazon for a Nintendo Switch Online membership for my friend but it does not work. I think it's because the code is American and we are European. Is there a way around this? We have tried changing the system region to "The Americas" but it still did not recognise the code. If you know, please help, because I don't want to have wasted money

I think (and others will put me right) is you need to create a new account. This account needs to be for the US.
Theres a guide I used on this site that stepped me through the process BUT its about creating an account for japan. Just change this to the US where it says Country/region of residence.

Means you have two accounts but games are region free.

Theres some interesting comments also made under this Feature that suggests that if you change the region on your account, then you lose all of your funds in your account.
Also this approach allows you to switch which eshop you're looking at without going to Nintendo's site.

Going by the website that I had the link for, you actually create an new Nintendo account on the website first. Using your browser. So two accounts.
One thats your "main" account and a secondary one thats set up for an overseas account.
After thats setup and confirmed then it can be added into the Switch.

I set up one for the US as a secondary but haven't tested it in purchasing any "money/credits/funds" to that account as finding most games get released in my region anyway.

A useful guide also here on purchasing credit gift cards.

Thanks to both for your replies! If we were to make a different account, would it be possible for him to set over his save data of Smash to it somehow?

Sorry...that i dont know.
Part of me says no as that saved data would be "linked" to his other main account.
I have only set up a separate "overseas" account (American) like the web link says.
I have never purchased anything or tried to swap save data.
I have only, at this stage, gone in and viewed the US store to see if there is any other games that arn't on my local estore.

Yeah heard it was "hit and miss" especially with credit cards BUT seems alot of people have had good results using Play-Asia.com and buying Eshop Cards for the selected region through them. Code is emailed through that looks like it works. so I've read.
Again...not going there. I'm 53 and cant be bothered these days with the hassle if something goes wrong.
Generally I have found that any games I really want or am looking forward to get released in my region, so I'm happy.

Whoa, it actually worked to change his account region on the website! I didnt expect it to make a difference from changing it on the Switch settings, but yeah. Thanks
