@TeaCatherine Maybe the battery charge is SO low that they need 40+ minutes charging before they'll work again. When rechargeable devices are drained all the way down, sometimes the system won't let turn on again until they have a whole bunch of charge. The same thing can happen if you let the switch console drain fully - it won't let you power up the switch until it's charged for at least 45 minutes.
I guess, check to make sure it's not a wifi/airplane mode issue. When airplane mode is On, a setting is accessible to enable wireless controllers.
Generally speaking, search Nintendo support for "joy-cons won't turn on", or "connect". If nintendo support troubleshooting can't solve your issue, that's likely a sign repair is needed. (I think fully drained batteries may be your issue though, which is solvable.)
Otherwise, any time there are joycon issues, step one is, make sure the joycons are updated via system settings/controller settings. Make sure the console is up to date.
This next link has directions to "reset the AC adapter", which we may as well try since it's recommended if joycons won't charge on the charging grip. Resetting the AC adapter is easy. Every once in a while, some funny things can happen with the Switch if the AC adapter get's fussy; For instance, Switch won't display on tv when docked - that is a well known issue solved by resetting the AC adapter.
I've seen a person or two in here say cleaning dust off the contacts inside the Switch rails solved a joycon connectivity/charging issue. I honestly don't know where the contacts are. I've looked, and it wasn't obvious to me - forgive me. I don't know if they used a plain toothbrush, or what.
(If you have any friends with a Switch, I'd be curious if their joycons will work ok on your Switch. This could help show if the problem is with the switch or the joycons.)
@TeaCatherine Side note: Last I knew, nintendo support phone number was hidden. It only became visible at the bottom of the email form. I don't know if this is still the deal. (being in the US, the Nintendo UK/EU webpage won't let me get that far anymore)
I have a sister with a switch, to be double sure I put my joy-cons on hers and they didn't work. I also put hers on mine and they connected. A couple more things I update my joy-cons regularly, I don't have charging grip I just charge them with the switch and I can't update them since they've stopped working all together. The problem is probably with the contacts (which I don't know where they are either), the battery or some connection inside.

@TeaCatherine Yeah, the charging grip troubleshooting page was just trying everything that might be relavent.
If you leave your joycons on your sister's switch for 45 minutes, and they still haven't started charging, then something is likely wrong with the joycons. In which case, they likely need repaired (a pain, I know) or replaced. Nintendo will repair joycons for free. If you contact Nintendo, you can ask for an estimated turnaround time to for joycon repair.
In the US, here, Nintendo Support has a phone number, and they would be a good place for help with troubleshooting joycons. I don't know if Nintendo UK/EU currently have a similar phone support line. I'm fairly certain they did before the pandemic. I would think it's back to normal now, but I don't know for certain, being that I'm across the pond.
As randomly as they broke, they started working again. Don't ask me why!
wow, that was weird, I just popped in to see if a solution was found but hey, at least it's working again. đ
I've had a good deal of electronic stuff do that to me over the years, they would stop working then suddenly work again, could be some loose internal connection or something, anyway congrats. đ
The same thing happened to my old Joy-cons. You have to get a replacement. Also, I unable to post new topics on the forums, and contact someone through âContact Usâ.
