Pardon me for ranking Melee as the lowest one, as there's many reasons why I don't like it as much. I even heard Masahiro Sakurai shows no liking to Melee, even though he is the creator of Smash. But I don't see why many people or some like Melee, though. I do try to respect that.
Anyway, about the other games, the original N64 one had really cool and addictive smash attack sounds, but very little content there was to discover and unlock since it's the very original where Smash all began. SSB4 on the 3DS was very good for being able to play anywhere, and its Wii U version is slightly better in the ways for HD graphics and introducing 8-player smash. Brawl? Yeah! Awesome that game! I liked its menu layout, soundtrack, stages, characters, much lesser clone fighters, replayability and the Subspace campaign for its cutscenes and progression. Loved Brawl very much since I got my hands on it in Christmas 2008 and felt so excited to play it that time. Finally, about Ultimate, I give this game a number one in my ranking. Why? Because it's the definitive Smash experience, with over 100 stages, many features, customisations, replayability, songs and having ALL past characters in one complete package. So much why this game is the best for me... But leaving only two downsides, however - jumping looks spontaneous rather than smooth (if any of you noticed this and understand what I'm meaning here), and Krystal is an Assist Trophy guest than a playable character. Sigh, I couldn't believe they made her that way. I've always wanted her to join the official roster, too. But other than that, excellent game Ultimate is.

@Sisilly_G Why should I? Never played Bayonetta games myself.

Nintendo Life DID used to be more active in receiving responses on one's made topics from over 10 years ago, didn't it? I remembered that well, and its original page designs, too.

It's a bit difficult to rank the Smash games because each one basically improves on and replaces the one before, plus I've only played Brawl, Wii U and Ultimate. Though having said that I'd probably put Brawl above Wii U just because the Subspace Emissary is so cool. But I think I'd have to say Ultimate is the best one, even though it's missing a couple of the modes I like such as Events and I'm not keen on the expensive DLC model, the sheer quantity of characters and stages makes up for it.
6 - Wii U. Smash Tour is garbage, and single player is seriously lacking which, I get it, it’s a weird thing to complain about in a Smash Bros game but the previous games had decent content for that so in comparison it’s weak. Also, no Snake so it’s in the bin.
5 - 64. Is great for the time and has its charm. But it’s been far surpassed by what’s come later
4 - Brawl. Gameplay is funky and tripping blows. But SSE is great so I’m willing to put up with it. Also it Brought in Snake
3 - 3DS. No Snake, but gameplay was improved and Smash Run is incredible
2. Melee. Well, duh
1. Ultimate. World of Light was fun but left a bit to be desired. Gameplay was at its best imo though. Also it’s roster. Brought back Snake, as well as other characters I love like Terry, Ken, and Kazuya
@JadeKitsune When it comes to character selection and fighting mechanics, yes. Pretty much everything else is different. Stages, modes, portability, etc. E.g. Smash Run is exclusive to 3DS and 8-player Smash is exclusive to Wii U. Also, Sakurai considers them two separate games.
My list based on playtime and how much I had fun with each game:
1. Ultimate
2. 3DS
3. Brawl
4. Wii U
5. 64
6. Melee
Melee is at the bottom because I played it after Brawl and I really dislike its physics. People complained that Brawl was really floaty and once I finally played Melee, I understood where they came from. In Melee, characters feel like rocks and I hate it. I think they found a nice balance later.
I’ve only played 3DS, Brawl, and Ultimate. 3DS is good, but doesn’t nearly compare to Brawl and Ultimate; I think it’s just the portability of a smash game that is interesting. The game is meh. If Smash Ultimate never existed, then Brawl would be hands down the best smash game. But Ultimate does exist, so that is indeed the better game.
Wait, why do we need a Sigurd? I mean signature, jeez.
