What's your favourite Metroid? what's your favourite type of Metroid? Are you 2D sidescroller or 3D First Person exploratory Adventure? Well I first played Metroid with Metroid Fusion on GBA when that first came out and I enjoy the 2D Metroids over 3D ones personally because I find it way easier to remember the entire 2D maps off by heart, then try and memorise a 3-Dimensional Metroid game. What I enjoy most about 2D metroids, are the ones with no map system, specifically the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus, that doesn't mean to say I don't like the other 2D Metroids, but I love a bit of a challenge.
Speaking of challenges, I'm not a big speed runner, but I have speed-runned Metroid Zero Mission at least a couple a dozen times, mostly because I feel the original is too old for that and is significantly harder for speed runs. I think the fastest i've ever beaten Zero Mission is 1hr 15 mins, including post game (mecha ridley etc), pretty fast if you ask me.
Of all the Metroids, I own the Original Metroid on NES (including the bonus copy on Zero Mission), Metroid II (3DS VC), Super Metroid (Wii VC), Metroid Zero Mission (GBA), Metroid Fusion (GBA, 3DS VC), Metroid Prime Hunters (DS) and Metroid Other M (Wii). I pretty much love all those games, yes, including Other M, I enjoyed that a lot and personally I don't see why people over-reacted the way they did. I think Samus needs character development, she isn't a robot, she's human and after all we got to see and hear more about the Galactic Federation, who for the most part of the series, has been in the shadows the whole time.
I don't know why Nintendo hasn't given us any news about a new Metroid in development, after all the games aren't always released or set in chronological order, for example Other M is actually set in between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.
I have heard Team Ninja has expressed interest in a new Metroid, but I'd rather this time Nintendo have one of their R&D groups handle it and further more have Yoshio Sakamoto write a game that's set after Fusion, I'm dying to know what happens to Samus now and I say it's the next logical step for the series in general.

Hopefully no one complains to me but the first metroid I played (I think anyway) was prime hunters for the ds and I really liked it, I played super metroid and the nes/game boy metroids and they are hard (too many hidden things that you need in order to pass), never played any other 3d one so prime hunters is my fav.
ps:also got prime hunters first hunt last week for cheap even though its a demo.

My two favorite Metroid games are Metroid Prime (the GCN original) and Metroid Other M.

While Other M seems to be a love it / hate it experience for most people, I found it to be enjoyable. There are some unfortunate missteps (and downright embarrassing design decisions) but the overall direction is well intentioned and the exploration and showy combat seem to fit the universe well.

Super Metroid is the correct answer.

Opinion not Fact @Retro . Super Metroid is a great game but doesn't mean it's the best. It's a Classic certainly but I've never let nostalgia cloud my opinion on anything, especially since I've played most of the metroid games in the last 7 years. I would consider the original to be my favourite even though it's the oldest, I didn't beat it until it came out as a 3DS Ambassador game, even though I owned it as an unlockable first when I got Zero Mission.
I cannot stress how much I love the original and I can say this because I didn't play it when it originally came out, I wasn't born then obviously but it just shows how classics can transcend time itself, some games age well, some don't.

Coincidentally, the Mexican Club Nintendo magazine just released a "special edition" Metroid issue (To celebrate their 250th issue and Metroid's 25 years).
It's filled with Metroid goodness (including an NES/Other M poster), and their top 5 was:

1- Super Metroid
2- Other M
3- Fusion
4- Prime
5- Corruption

Metroid Fusion is my favorite Metroid, it's the only one i've beaten cause I get bored of them real easy, not that they're bad though it's just too silent for me.

I've gotta go with Metroid Prime. It was the first Gamecube game I ever played, and it is still my favorite game for the system. It's a strikingly atmospheric single player experience that not only showed off the shiny new Gamecube's potential, but remains a classic of that generation..

I've only played 3 (Metroid, II: Return of Samus, and Fusion), and out of them:

1. Metroid Fusion
2. Metroid II: the Return of Samus
3. Metroid

I've been wanting to play 3D one, so I've been on the lookout for Prime.

In your opinion.

I'd definitely have to go with Prime 1 with Super running a very, very close second. I'd also like to point that Fusion is magnificent in almost everyway. (One of the best sequels ever.)

Just for you.

My favorite is Metroid Prime 1. Such an amazing title, RETRO did an amazing job on the whole trilogy.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

Metroid Other M is my favorite Metroid game.
