Illusion

I could watch these movies every month and be happy:
Starship Troopers
Aliens
Terminator 2
Robocop
Army of Darkness
LOTR Return of the King
Star Wars ep III
Kelly's Heroes
The Thing
Pacific Rim

Illusion

D-Star92

I'm not super into movies myself, I've always been more into games, but I do like quite a few of them. Here's some of my favorites in no particular order:

Back to the Future trilogy
Terminator 1 and 2
The Matrix
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

Also, similar to @Sunsy, I do like Disney movies as well! Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, with The Lion King not too far behind.

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World

AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️

John McTiernan is probably my favorite director.

Predator in '87, Die Hard in '88, and The Hunt for Red October in '90.

Has any director had a better three-year run of smash hits?

@Magician I don't know if he fits into that ultra-specific category, but between 1987 and 1992, Rob Reiner directed The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Not only are those all good films, but there's an impressive genre diversity there: fantasy, romantic comedy, psychological thriller, and a legal thriller.

Actually, I'll raise you John Hughes. Between 1984 - 1987, he released:
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Planes, Trains & Automobiles

edit: gd, looking at the incredible films that released in the 80s is a tad depressing. Cinema really went downhill between then and now.

Magician

@Ralizah Good call with John Hughes. Not my favorite but I thoroughly respect the body of work.

So on a gamers forum which gone three pages talking about their favourite movies no one has mentioned Scott Pilgrim, the greatest video game movie ever made!?

I’d imagine Scorsese in the 80s/90s, Hitchcock in the 50/60s, Spielberg in the 80/90s, Coen Brothers in the 90s/00s, Sergio Leone in the 60s, Richard Donner in the 80s when they were at their most prolific would have say with that but I can’t be bothered to check. If it’s just smash hits then probably Michael Bay when he was churning Transformer films out almost yearly or Tim Burton when got into his hacky phase wins.

Although I’d personally give it to Mike Flanagan when he started out and produced the excellent Oculus, Hush and Before I Wake in quick succession.

@jump That's a whole bunch of cinema legends you've listed there. Kind of difficult to argue against any of them. Especially Sergio Leone; the no-name stranger trilogy continues to be the gold standard for spaghetti westerns, despite Quentin Tarantino's efforts.

Sunsy

@MarioLover92 I would also say Beauty and the Beast is another favorite from my childhood, next to Pinocchio. Most of the movies I mentioned are Disney ones, aside from Trolls (DreamWorks), Jimmy Neutron (Nickelodeon), and Smurfs The Lost Village (Sony).

I also forgot to mention My Little Pony The Movie, the 2017 one.

The resident Trolls superfan! Saw Trolls Band Together via early access and absolutely loved it!

RR529

@Ralizah, funny, I just happened to be reading an article at work the other day called "Movies that could never be made today... and it's for the best", and like 2 or 3 of those John Hughes movies were mentioned, lol.

Here's the article for anyone interested: https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/these-movies-could-neve...

@Magician I was curious and gonna list them all out per director but there's way too many films to do that. Hathcock over 10 years did the below, I think he wins hands down to be honest.

Dial M for Murder (54)
Rear Window (54)
To Catch a Thief (55)
The Trouble with Harry (55 I don't know this one)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (56)
The Wrong Man (56)
Vertigo (58)
North by Northwest (59)
Psycho (60)
The Birds (63)

Also I didn't mention both Clint Eastwood in 00s (when his great run which started with Space Cowboys and included Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino and a few othe great flicks came to halt with that silly J. Edgar movie) and Spike Lee in the 80s.

Some other films I'd add to my list:

  • Rear Window
  • Halloween
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Return of the Living Dead
  • Hereditary
  • The Land Before Time
  • Your Name
  • The Tale of Princess Kaguya

@Solaine Really happy to see someone else boost "Her." Absolutely fantastic satire. One of my all-time favorite science-fiction films.

@RR529 First film on that list is Blazing Saddles, lol. What a tool.

FroZtedFlake

Basically any spider-man besides the amazing spider-man 2 is great
Dr. Strange
Thor Ragnarok
Lego Batman and Lego Movie 1 for stupid humor
Jurassic Park 1, and that's the only good movie in the series
Blades of glory
Napoleon Dynamite
All Lotr movies (especially return of the king)
Inside Out
Up
Back To The Future trilogy

And you can't forget, Borderline Forever (heh)

Lego LotR Wii
Spirit Tracks DS

@FroZtedFlakerZz Amazing Spider Man 2 is the most real Spider Man though. If he’s not snapping his bint’s neck then we can’t truly say it’s actually Spider Man and we are just left with the sell out ones!!! ;p

OldManHermit

Time Bandits (adventure)
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (adventure)
Ravenous (Horror/thriller)

But a sampling of my fav movies, but all really good flicks I'd recommend to anyone. Although maybe not Ravenous if gore makes you squeamish.

OldManHermit

D-Star92

@Sunsy I like all the Disney ones you've mentioned as well! I also really like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, that one's a good watch since you're into cartoons and animated movies. Wreck-It Ralph is also really good, thought I'd mention that here. I never saw Ralph Breaks the Internet though.

@jump i dont care much for hitchcock, but the guy was prolific. Rope, Psycho, Rear Window, and North by Northwest I enjoy. Pass on everything else. The Trouble with Harry was a bizarre dark comedy. Had some beautiful scenery in it, but otherwise a bit of a mess.

For me:
Jurassic Park
King King (33)
King Kong Vs. Godzilla (62)
Alien
Blade Runner
Shaun of the Dead
Barton Fink/Fargo/The Big Lebowski (cant decide)
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Fantastic Mr. Fox
My Neighbor Totoro/Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away (ditto)
Millenium Actress
Police Story

And it may be recency bias but:
Andrei Rublev
Seven Samurai

There are prolly a dozen others i'm neglecting.

@jump No no I think that was realistic, he deserved a good girlfriend neck-snapping, the villains were dumb though

@Rambler Ehhhh, the Japanese Spider-Man show is probably better
