Topic: Will future game controllers be touchscreen only?

to everyone hating on touchscreen Evolve or get out

touch screen tech obviously needs more work before it can can be implemented better to near perfection "for the lack of better word" but some people seeing how bad it works now are or want to downplay it to the garbage and hope it never improves over control sticks being the tradition

well guess what im ready for change anytime if this happens to be the case in the future im ready to adapt to new methods and not complain about it

EDIT: Ah, and I see WaltzElf (YellowChocobo) still hasn't overcome his Apple fanboy-ism. You really need to get that cured, buddy.

Says the Nintendo fanboy that can't even be bothered giving something else a chance.

Cool trolololing, buddy.

Your fanboy-ism is different, WaltzElf. Your fanboy-ism is unwavering; you use every chance you get to boost about how Apple is the greatest company in the world and how they aren't ripping people off when they release the iPhone Barely-Enhanced-Edition every 6-12 months. Even though I'm a fanboy of X and/or Y, I'll admit when they're doing something stupid. Like, for example: Nintendo idiotically handled the launch of the 3DS and I will stand by that statement until Nintendo can prove me otherwise (which they won't). You, on the other hand, seem to think that Apple can't, never will, and would never think of doing something stupid. Unlike you, I'm not blind.

The hypocricy is astounding.

Mind you, half the time I get called a Sony fanboy, the other half the time I'm an Apple fanboy. I can't be both, so which is it?

Oh right. It's actually because I'm the one who isn't blind. Nintendo f*$%&ed up the 3DS launch entirely, and because I don't worship the smell of Nintendo management's crap, then I'm automatically the enemy. You know, despite owning a Wii and 3DS and I would bet my life on it that I have ten times as many games on Nintendo consoles than you. Yeah. I JUST LOATHE NINTENDO!!!1one!

Grow the hell up.

My uncle who works at Nintendo had this to say: "It's never gonna happen."

My aunt, who works at Sony, responded with this: "F**k Nintendo, and it'll never happen."

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

By "touchscreen only" do you mean the touch screen replaces ALL buttons and joysticks? Or do you mean that they will have a touch screen along with the buttons, and whatnot.

Cringing is really fun.

I'll let you know when I get back from my trip to the future.

Edit @V8_Ninja: Apple isn't doing something stupid. They WOULD be being stupid if they weren't continually upgrading their hardware to compete with Android.

I think so long as there are gamers like us, there will always be a market for buttons.

EDIT: I think the biggest problem with touch screen gaming, actually, is that it means there will be far less traditional games, which makes my worry. I never really liked the type of games they release on the iDevices, so that would mean I'd have less new games to play.

That depends, which one are you?<_<

Read the post. I said touchscreen-only (without any buttons whatsoever).

Fixed.

I think it's the other way around. Apple leads the market, while Android and Windows Phone 7 follow.

I think it's kind of irrelevant who's "leading". They're all competing with each other, which is a good thing.

Yes, they shut down all the devices that came before it, forcing people to get the newer version. Seriously, I have an iPod Touch 3 that's been servicing me for almost two years now and I still see no reason to upgrade it. And think: Computer companies release new computers every few months, does that mean the people who bought the one that came before got ripped off? Car companies release a new car every year, does that mean the people who bought last year's model got ripped off?

No, of course not. Just because there's a new version, doesn't mean the version you already have suddenly has no value. So long as what you have still works and does the things you need it to do, so long as you're getting your moneys worth, that's all that really matters.

I'm sorry, but I freakin' hate this argument. I say the same thing about annual video games, too: Who cares if there's a better version, so long as you had fun with the one you already have?

THANK YOU for adding some logic and clarity to this discussion debate. You could say the same thing about video game systems. Companies release updated models with new features all the time. And each new generation improves on the last, yet not everyone needs to upgrade to the latest hardware.

Well there is one good thing about a touchscreen only future (if it happens), I'd be able to catch up on titles I missed and start building a retro collection.

Um...no you can't. They don't upgrade as frequently, and if you don't decide to upgrade, then you can't get the latest games. (where as my ITouch can still download all the latest music and most of the applications)

I agree with Cheetaman91 and Mickeymac as at least then I would be able to catch up on all the titles out now that I would still want to play.

For the sake of my finger joints, I hope for games consoles controlled by the power of thought.

The one thing I don't like about Apple is how they eliminate previous models immediately after a new one comes out (particularly, the iPod Nano and iTouch).

I have the recent 6th gen nano, and although no video is understandable (wicked small screen), I don't know why it is priced the exact same as the previous generation with more features, even if it's not much. I love my Nano 6th gen particularly because it's completely gym friendly- clip it on, it's small- but i've dropped it 5 times at least because it's so light, I forget I'm holding in one hand with my phone and sometimes my wallet (as I get out of the car I gather everything). But that's me.

Newer models of game systems should be acceptable especially when it doesn't make your older model obsolete (Besides DSi, which is an enhanced DS with cool features but it doesn't mean DSlite is worthless). And maybe the Gameboy Color with it's exclusive games which the DSi kinda follows- except the former did make older GB models obsolete.. kinda. And the GBC did boost the Gameboy's popularity by a helluva lot and is probably the best revision Nintendo has done for their handhelds , after GBASP and GB Micro (I love my Micro!)

Anyways, I went off topic there. Pardon me.

I really hope not. The click of a button will always be superior to simply touching a screen.

I want to say I'm sorry about my previous comments (which I have now deleted). I wasn't having a good day, my thoughts weren't quite calm, and I really wanted to do something with about it. Being the idiot I just came in here swinging at WaltzElf trying to bash on him because he really wasn't making anyone's day happy. Anyone willing to forgive, forget and move on?

Anyways, my comment pertaining to the topic of this thread was that normal button-and-analog controls just work too well compared to touch-screen controls. When you press a button on a controller, it sends a very specific signal to the device and it is easier to interpret that into an on-screen action. With an touch-screen device, you have to make your own "buttons" that may or may not work depending on a number of factors, specifically most of those problems being on the user end, something that a game developer can't fix.
