Topic: Why not just do PC Gaming?

For a second I thought Xkhaoz made this topic and it was addressed solely to me.

Anyway, I don't just do PC gaming because it's usually not worth the hassle. If it weren't for all of the amazing games that I can get on PC, but can't currently get anywhere else, I wouldn't have 89 games in my Steam account, or even use Steam for gaming, for that matter (seriously, they have great IMing). I hate having to install your games and sometimes go through lengthy setup processes or fruitless ones that never work. I hate (and this is mostly a personal thing) how games feel devalued on PC because there are so many "must-have" indie bundles every couple weeks and Steam sales are so ridiculous that it gets you to buy games you don't have time to play or otherwise never would. I could go on, but suffice it to say that many things feel wrong about PC gaming to me and I don't feel that there is anything inherently good about it. Luckily there are tons of awesome PC games to make up for that.

Having said all that, I realllly want Tiny and Big and Quantum Conundrum right now, but I haven't even start Sword and Sworcery! Also, Wallace and Gromit.

A lot of people here, especially the rabid fanboys, do not understand PC gaming.

Yes you can play on a tv, with a controller. Yes you can play with motion control. You can play in 3D. No you don't have to upgrade every two weeks. In the long run its not more expensive than a console.

So many wii fans have so many horrible perceptions and misconceptions about pc gaming. Thankfully there are a couple reasonable people in this thread which I was happy to see.

I'm a PC/Nintendo gamer. The only PC games I play are Valve games and Minecraft. If Valve games and Minecraft were released for Wii U, I would stop PC Gaming.

Paper Mario Sticker Star (3DS)
Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

But does a PC play the games we so called fanboys want to play? Besides emulation and poor off Q music emulation at that?

Because PC doesn't have console exclusives. PC was fine and dandy for Valve games and indie hits, but then there's games like Uncharted, Mario, and Killzone which are only on consoles/handhelds.

I tried this out sort of halfheartedly, and it didn't work. If it had, I would probably do more PC gaming. I bought a cheap HDMI cable from Amazon, but it stopped letting me switch the audio to my TV speakers and only works for visuals now. Even then it often has issues and I have to keep re-plugging it in until it works.

As for controllers, I was this close to being a happy controller-enabled PC gamer, and even had purchased an Xbox 360 wireless controller on sale and everything. Problem was I didn't want to shell out $23 extra for a wireless adapter (should've decided that before, I know), so I went for a wireless Onlive controller in hopes of promised Kindle Fire support instead. That support never came and I am now left with a controller that Portal 2 recognizes but glitches out whenever I try to actually use with it, and thus my TV + controller PC gaming dream is dead.

This wasn't addressed to you, Alex, but your post gave me the idea to detail my PC adventures.

I have a laptop. I can hook it up to the TV with a cable, but it's not a very elegant solution.

My TV is hooked up to nice speakers. Why have a separate stereo, DVD Player, and game system all hooked up to the TV, when I can have one device that already does all that? Game systems are powerful enough to play videos and music, stream from the internet, and have a blu-ray or DVD drive anyway. Why not give me those features, and then I don't have to worry about upgrading my computer every couple of years to get the newest games and my living room looks nice?

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

And only two of them aren't horrible and completely opinionated.

Impressive, that's better than usual.

Here's the way I see it. There's PC games and Nintendo. Nintendo games are meant to be played on a TV one reason is because of the great local multiplayer. Everything else on consoles is really just like PC gaming.

Actually, none of the facts in my article were opinions and now you're just beign unreasonable. In your article, do you really believe that "Hit or miss DLC" and "PC gamer community being bad" are facts? They're both opinions. Not to mention the last 2 reasons on the list were simply companies that don't give their PC games the same treatment as consoles.
Seriosuly, name one section in my article which is an opinion. Is it that "There are free mods"? Because I'm fairly certain that's a fact. Also, I didn't realize that "Supporting mouse and keyboard" was an opinion. Same with "Cheaper games", "Upgradeable hardware", and "Unlimited storage space". They must be opinions too. Because they obviously cannot be proved.

But then you get stupid reasons like "no RROD" and "not having to pay to play online" which was really on just 1 console (the article even mentioned that). Also, most of those other "facts" have a catch to them which is you have to spend a lot.

For reasons why consoles are preferred to PC's, here are some:

  • From what I heard, you are beta testing the games when you buy them at launch (aka more bugs than you'd like before they patch it)
  • Maintaining gaming-specific components of the computer like graphics-drivers and BIOS. This isn't as common as a non-PC gamer thinks. However, if you run into errors with games, they can be a hassle to deal with like Gamesake's link pointed out.
  • ATI and nVIDIA are fragmenting the PC game market and making it difficult for consumers to pick PCs and games. They use their own proprietary tech to compete with each other, like PhysX, CUDA, Stream, and more. Consequently, developers optimize their games for one of the tech and brands, that it's unfair for other consumers. The graphics hardware needs to be standardized to encourage PC game development even further.
  • Gaming PC can be cheap, but you really need to know what to do. If you want a pre-built PC from an ordinary PC maker (i.e. HP, DELL, etc.), my opinion is that you have to buy the more expensive PCs to get your worthwhile investment while the cheaper ones are cheaper in quality. Gaming PC botiques (i.e. Alienware) are very expensive, and I have never ordered from them, so I can only think that they're very reliable with top customer service. You can build your own to save money, but unless you or a friend/family are a computer geek, you will be intimidated. It is an unsuitable job for the average Joe. If you wanna take this route, google how to build one if you're new.
  • This is arguable, but computers are conceptually suited as a multi-purpose machine with emphasis on work. Game consoles are suited as a gaming machine (and now a multi-media device) for the TV. You can plug PCs to the TV and a controller, and play it like a console. Nevertheless, the games are designed with a monitor and standard PC setup in mind, and from my experience, TV output is a bit shoddy at best unless you have a multi-media PC. Essentially, PC and software, outside of multimedia PCs, aren't meant for TVs.
  • Most of all, developer support isn't there in my opinion. Console ports are always happening, and the only PC-exclusive games are indie games and Blizzard's games. This is a very sticky situation and there is no win-win for anyone at the moment. Piracy is discouraging publishers from comfortably supporting it, and it costs money to make games. DRM is a silly attempt to thwart piracy, and it's only being a burden on the consumers. Unfortunately, DRM might only be encouraging piracy and therefore making PC gaming business more of a mine field. I hope there's more support in the future, because average PCs are getting more powerful.
