Topic: Why do all of us have to speak English

I think other users have covered my thoughts quite well. I could choose to complain (not that I am) about UK spelling vs. American spelling as I'm a human autocorrect machine (rumor/rumour for example), but that would be a pointless discussion not worth anyone's time or energy.

@Luna_110 Well add me to the diminishing group (hold the line!) of Americans whining for less voice acting because I prefer to read, lol.

Seconded. I don't mind VA work when it's done well, but I'm not going to complain if a game doesn't come with voice acting.

@Ryu_Niiyama My native language is English, but I also know three other languages. Of course I do not know them as well as I know English, but it is cool to read other languages as well. I wasn't asking that the forum change their rules, I just thought the rule was absurd. And I want people to know that I still think the one language rule bothers me; however, I do finally understand why it is limited in forums like these. I ain't chanting "free internet" in any way. I was just expressing an opinion.

@Hotfusion Haha. Why is it so weird to want other languages on the forum too? It wouldn't be alienating anybody especially if majority of the users speak English. How in the world would you alienate the English speaking users? In some forums, if you only speak the English language, then you will only talk to people who speak in English. If you know English plus another language or languages, you could converse with more of the world. I think everyone who knows the English language should also know two more languages (at least) and stop thinking within the world of what they understand. That may sound absurd to you, but let me tell you - there is another world out there if you acculturate with something else for a while.

It's not a strange concept if you know multiple languages. My native language is English. And while I think conversations like the one I am having with you is interesting, conversations are interesting in other languages as well.

If you want to make life more interesting, learn another language. Or if you want to venture within the English language, then do so. It isn't a problem, but you are missing out, my friend.

You sound like a person who thinks its super cool that you know multiple languages, and you'd like to remind everyone at every opportunity. You're like the lingual version of a vegan.

If I live in the United States, work in the United States, intend on staying in the United States... how does learning multiple other languages greatly benefit my life?

Please tell me what I'm missing out on. The opportunity to talk to other people online in Portuguese? That sure sounds worth dedicating several months to years of my life to learning a new language.

Traveling? I've been all over Europe with zero issues. Should I spend two years learning French for the one week a decade I spend in France? No.

Your problem is you think everyone should share your interests. I could tell you to study molecular biology for four years, or else you're missing out. That would be an incredibly naive suggestion based on what I personally found rewarding in my life.

We get it, you speak multiple languages. For a decent portion of us, we collectively don't care. I'll continue watching my movies in English, playing my games in English, talking to my coworkers in English, and criticizing misinformed opinions on NintendoLife in English.

You're in no position to tell me my life is any less interesting because of it.

Id be ok with it if people talked the language they want to. I dont understand it? I dont read it. But yeah it would already fail because we would need to have people of every language checking the content.

@The_Pocket_Gamer freedom is why it's like a radio channel that only speaks Spanish if you don't know the language and don't care to learn it then skip it or you can force them to learn your language up to you

I think the people taking the 'it would be harder to moderate' a bit on the wrong track.

It would be as easy as having more mods that know one or more languages. Well, not that it would be EASY, but it's not like we need a full team of 10 persons per language.

The problem comes from the fact that it would segment the community.

Now, instead of having a big group of people sharing opinions (and telling each other how wrong their opinions are), you'd have multiple little groups of people where only a few would be able to belong in more than one group.

The thing is that this is already how things are, in the bigger picture: the Internet is a giant group of people communicating, subdivided in groups by criteria like language, interests and location.

People wanting to join those different groups will simply find a site that suits their needs. There's no need to subdivide the Internet down further on a site by site basis.

Anyway, please let's not start a nasty argument over this. There's no need to be rude, or bring in political jokes.

I am an English only speaker. So are many others. If you speak English only you alienate NO ONE on this forum.
If you speak any other language in your post you alienate those who don't speak that language.

It that so difficult to grasp? It is not a concept equivalent to rocket science.

Yippee yah you can speak a dozen languages, great. I choose not to because I speak the language that the world generally communicates in. It is a known fact that natural English speakers don't usually have a second language and non English speakers usually have English as their second language.

My nephew (about eight years old at the time) once ask why do Formula One drivers only talk in English on the podium when being interviewed although they are Spanish, German, French, etc., and isn't this alienating (he didn't use this word but I do for the obvious) millions of fans who don't speak English. Why is it that every driver MUST learn English and the English drivers don't need to speak anything else.

Yes, but to use any other language will alienate even more viewers. The opening ceremony of all global major events are in English - along with the locale.

But this is going nowhere and it was late in my day when I responded to your post so maybe I didn't make myself clear but I stand by my point and I guess you will stand by yours.

Nice talking to you anyway.

@Meowpheel Maybe not a full team of 10 people per language, but at least a couple of them. It's the reason why we have mods from all over the world, so that I can sleep well knowing you're awake, dealing out bans and closing threads! No, but seriously, there are over 6,000 living languages. Not all of them are that common, but if there's no restriction, anyone can potentially post in one of those languages. It's impossible from a moderator's perspective, and it just doesn't work from a reader's perspective.

@The_Pocket_Gamer you say you aren't asking the forum to change yet in the same breath you say it is absurd, ignoring why the rule is in place here and common on forums that don't have a language focus. This is a privately run location that allows the public to have some access. It must be moderated and its content has a target demographic. UK gamers. Again you agreed to this when you signed up. The whole "I want to make an irrational complaint but when it is refuted I'll play the opinion card" is what I mean by chanting free internet. Rather than accepting the rules set by NL in exchange for them give us a place to discuss games you want to make a thread and use it as your soapbox for why their rules are "absurd", despite many of us giving you logical explanations as to why that isn't the case. English itself has many dialects and lexicon differences making it hard enough to understand native speakers sometimes, let alone a person that is obviously ESL. That is before you get to grammar and spelling issues. Not only that tone is hard to read in text unless you are willing to speak like an Elcor from the Mass Effect games. Even that is just for people that speak honestly. Trolls who like to bait and annoy others are a different animal because you can't often read intent easily (and they pull out the it's my opinion card as well).
Even if the site was willing to decend into a moderator's nightmare it would become a cacophony if text soon enough as there are do many users and so many languages. Derailed threads would be a norm around here. Even worse the site would quickly become unwelcoming to its target demographic.

You have options for speaking to others in your language, just as the rest of us who speak other languages do. Make a thread for gamers from your region and in English ask to speak outside of NL, I am sure people will jump on that. Or again spend time in communities that target your language rather than ranting about how others should chang to accommodate you. I hang out on Japanese forums and sites on occasion and when there I speak Japanese. I don't go there and ask why their site isn't in English. I am not from the Uk and there are references made on this site that I don't always understand. Yet no reason to complain, as I'm in someone else's house. Far more productive than complaining about the terms of service for this community. Plus it is good manners.

Well, yes it would be impossible if we somehow got an active community for every language in the world. But I don't think it's realistic to expect that.

At most I'd see people using five to ten languages at the same time

@Octane, @6ch6ris6: This proves how rusty my German is. I took three years of it in high school, but that was almost seven years ago now. I need to brush up! I roughly got the gist of both messages, but finally ran them both through a translator to check myself. XD

@Ryu_Niiyama: Neat! You know Japanese? That's the other language on my bucket list.

@Tyranexx I'm working on my JLPT certification so I've had to get off my butt and get serious. I'm not at DiscoGentleman's level but I can read and write it well enough to post on forums with confidence. I'd like to work on Greek and American Sign Language after I pass my certification. Japanese is useful to me because of my hobbies and work interests (I'm trying to get into freelance translating) but ASL is always good to know along with Braille. Greek is just because why not? With so many languages in the world why pick the mainstream favorites? I adore linguistics in general (should have just gone to school for it honestly) but I'm a bit of a grammar stickler (despite my horrible usage of commas because I don't pause a though where most people do) and I didn't want to send myself to an early grave. I'll let poverty do that instead, sigh.
