"Yoshi is supposedly a male, but lays eggs like a female. Birdo is supposedly a female, but was originally called a male. And now the two of them are a romantic couple? They were both sexually chaotic as individuals — this new pairing just made your head hurt thinking about it."

Yea well actually male sea horses lay the eggs and male penguins tend to lay on the egg. Plus Yoshi's eggs never really seem to hatch.
@SuperOtaku I didn't think it ever directly said Birdo was a girl. I thought that you only find a, well, adult object in her house which "proves" it is female, although the object could easily belong to a, um, Birdo as well. (I think I see why this game never came outside of Japan now that I think about it.)

I'm pretty sure it started out as a dude that thought it was a girl back in the NES days but as time went on, I think it turned into a girl. Just a girl. It would probably be a little weird nowadays to have a Nintendo character be a drag queen....I mean really, could anyone see Nintendo implementing such a character today? I think not.

Yep, that's what SMB2's instruction manual says. The GBA version removed it and gave Birdo a girly voice.

Well, there was a time when I thought I would never see a Nintendo game implement hallucinogenic drugs as a gameplay twist. That was before I played Mother 3.
Birdo essentially went through a gender swap...although there's really no way to ascertain one way or another. The womanly voice and romance with Yoshi/Popple doesn't necessarily "prove" it. Haven't seen anything officially stating Birdo is a female, but it seems to be implied I guess.
While we're discussion gender controversy, who could forget that Paper Mario 2's Vivan is a male in Japan? [The game's menus and tattlelogs acknowledge it to be true, at least.]
@turtlelink Capcom is letting people vote on Poison's gender, last I heard.
