Topic: Video Game Review Systems

Normally I'm bad at doing threads and such, but I wanted to make this after a saw a video (yes, just one video). I'd also like others to put their 2 cents for this topic
Here's the video:

First off, I want to let you guys know that I haven't really thought out what I'm gonna say, but I'm gonna try anyways.

So, after watching the video, it made me think about Nintendo Life's review system, as well as other game review sites for a while. Looking at reviews, I tend to care less and less about them (the actual opinion and content they hold) and I just basically skip down to the score and see if it got a high score, or a low score so I could get an overall feel of the how good is the game. But a couple years after and I just stopped caring about reviews all together (well, almost).

Now, since Gamexplain is trying a new system out (one without numerical values) it makes the review process more thoughtful and insightful to me, and it makes me wonder... If other websites did this, would I be more interested? Answer: yes.

Instead of looking at a score and wondering... "Why is the score the game currently has is that score?" (I don't think that made sense), I can now wonder.. "Why does the person love or hate the game/experience?" If reviews were like that, I'd take the time to look and read the review and wonder why the person feels a certain way about the game/experience. It'd give the review a lot more value to me, and I'd try to compare other people's reviews. Plus, with numerical reviews, you can't really compare two people's experience with the game.

I might have more to add later, but right now, my mind and body aren't feeling to good today (caught my sister's cold and I'm trying to stay up as best as I can), so I'm gonna rest for now, but let me ask some questions:

For Nintendo Life reviewers and game reviewers in general, what are your thoughts on the way games are currently reviewed? Should there be a numerical score at the end of every review? Should others try and change the way games are review? Would you be willing to review a game in your own way and not have to give it a score?

As for others, I'd like to know your opinions and thoughts.

I hope what I wrote wasn't confusing or unclear for you guys. Heck, I'm not that good at things like this, but at least I tried.
Goodnight. Didn't proof read. Meh.

I tend to read reviews backwards. I skip down to the numerical value first and read the conclusion. After that, I go back and read through the entire review. The context of a review is always important, so I like to read the summary first so that I know the reviewer's overall feeling of the game while I'm going through his or her thoughts.

@CaviarMeths I mostly tend to do that now, as opposed to the past where I started from top-to-bottom, or skipped straight to the score.

I skip to the bottom too. But more to check if I actually want to read the review. I dont want to read a review that got a 6 that i wasnt too interested in to begin with. I think numbers help summarize the review and should b added

I always read the review and formulate my own opinion before the conclusion. then I see how their score compares. But my numerical rating based on issues and how they will affect me is more important to me than theirs usually.

Take notes NintendoLife Writers/Reviewers
I feel like GameXplain reviews do so much justice, and go over the entire game I'm glad they made their reviews even BETTER with this new review system it takes out all the pointless fanboys going "BUT I WANTED A 10/10 NOT A 9/10 THIS REVIEW SUCKS"

I just saw the same video XD

It's definitely an interesting topic that already passed by on NL over and over, but still didn't get a solution.
A big prove is that right now there are lots of comments around the articles here complaining why Kirby and Yoshi got low scores; no complain about what the reviewers said, no mention on which part of the review is "wrong", just a complain the score is low.

I personally always read the text of a review, numbers are just a quick recap for me, but lots of people seem to only scroll to the stars and their number is enough for decide if buy or avoid a game (and even judge the review's quality ^^;;; ).

Honestly I would love to say NL should remove scores, on this site there is even already an "alternative to score", which are the -Conclusions-, a perfect quick resume of the review that can give a fast recap when the readers doesn't need all the details, just wish a fast answer to the question"Is it good or bad for you guys?", BUT the score system is very radicated into the gaming industries and unavoidably also in this site history, so what sound like a cool possibility to me and a great new way for Gamexplain could not be a positive change for NL maybe and most probably also for reasons I can't even imagine since I don't know the behind the scenes of sites like NL >_>;

I would find interesting personally if this site could try to change system (and forgive me, but I would love even more to witness the mess coming out of such decision XD), but I know it could not be that easy to do such experiment and maybe it's even something most people don't want to see even between the staffs of the site, so I just add my opinion here and whatever will happen it will be fine for me.

Scores or not I'll keep reading the reviews, so I just hope this site will keep having the high text quality in them with which it spoiled us

I think Famitsu's is the best scoring system. 4 opinions are better than 1 because it means that the extremes are balanced out.

(And normally if they like something as a group of four the chances are I will. I used a bit of past data to determine this).

The games I seem to like the most are the ones where a large proportion of people hate the game.

I would like it if the out now had some relation when it comes to things in genres that the consensus of all the Nintendo Life staff at the moment recommends.

Review scores are dumb IMHO. I wouldn't mind seeing them go. Maybe then we can actually have higher standards of review writing and videos since people will actually pay attention to the writen review.

To be fair, a lot of people said that they felt the fact Triple Deluxe didn't 'innovate the series' was not justification for the 7 it received. Others said that the new abilities are good enough, whether or not one would call them 'innovative.

True enough, in all honestly I was being generic for not make even longer my post ^_^;
Of course there are also many people which elaborates why they disagree with a review, addressing what actually the review said than the score itself, but I still have the feeling most times the comments are not of that high and respectable quality...

Too often we read comments like the once you mentioned which compare scores between games and often those scores are from different reviewers which reviewed totally different kind of games. Placing the score value over the games' own identity and the fact reviewers are different people is a total miss of the real point @.@;

Anyway I don't need to say more since I simply totally agree with all you said

The most useful functions of this site should be the out now and coming soon lists however they are the least useful.

Looking at the numbers gives a completely wrong picture. (Only way is to read everything which I would rather not do).

I personally hope the way games are reviewed change throughout time. Old systems go obsolete, and new ones will always appear.

imo, if the reader decides to skip the review right down to the score, it can't possibly be the review score's fault that this happened. I mean, the reader chose not to read the whole thing! If you didn't want to read the whole thing to begin with, getting rid of review scores isn't going to make you read it.

that being said, I don't give too much thought to game scores. I know there are some people who do. In the end, it's not that big a deal. I wonder what this will mean for sites like Metacritic though.

EDIT: After hearing some of the video, I don't see how much this changes reviewing. You could just say "Loved" equates to a 5/5 and "Liked" is 4/5 and so forth.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

When a game I'm interested in is being reviewed, I look for a conclusion first. If the game is really mediocre (4-6/10), I tend to skip the review. But if it's any other score, I'm reading everything, and then I look for at least 3 more reviews to compare the first one to. That gives me a good outline to determine wether I'll get the game or not.

I agree that they're somewhat undermining what they're trying to do. They should forgo using a single word and emoticon to summarize the game and just do an actual summary of a few sentences at the end of the review.

Absolutely. There's no good reason to summarize any good reviews into one or few words. An elaborate summary works much more efficiently by reminding the audience of previous statements while shortening them to the core arguments, but without changing the general impression.
