@Anti-Matter If you're playing Mario for the story, then you're looking for the wrong game. The Mario games have always been about gameplay over story.

@Anti-Matter Might I recommend Link's Awakening on Switch? It's generally considered to have a more engrossing and emotional story than most other Zelda games and it's probably one of the most traditional Zeldas you could get on Switch (not including games on NSO of course).

@Anti-Matter BotW is extremely different compared to every other game in the series. In BotW, the story is practically non-existent, but games like Link's Awakening, Twilight Princess, Windwaker, A Link Between Worlds, etc. have actual stories to them.

@Anti-Matter Mario is not a story base game, paper mario maybe but mario is not about the plot.
You have story games, and you have just games, and it doesn't really have a story along with it, Mario has stayed vanilla for years and it works, because your playing it for the gameplay and not the story.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

A game being popular is a weird reason to hate a game. I used to hate Undertale when I was younger because it was popular, but then I actually played it and realized that I was missing out, just because of a toxic fanbase.

@Fizza I loved Link's Awakening on Switch. It's the best version of the game I think, and is also pretty easy to get into for a Zelda game. I totally recommend it to anyone, to be honest!

In all seriousness though, 100% agree with you. The reason I love SMB2 is just how interesting and bizarre it is compared to every other Mario game. A lot of Mario games can sometimes fall into the trap of feeling the same aesthetically. SMB2 is the best outlier possible, with all of the enemies being unique, levels being more vertically oriented instead of just horizontally and even the movement itself since you're encouraged to not kill enemies by jumping but instead picking them up and chucking them at other obstacles. That so friggin cool man.

Hell yeah!
If we all stayed away from games because they had gatekeepers in the fandom, we'd never play anything.

I do mostly agree, but I don't blame people sometimes when its unavoidable in a particularly miserable or obnoxious way. But otherwise, I don't care about fandoms. Unless you count this exact forum, I almost never interact too much with actually popular fandoms, the niche ones are the far safer bets in my experience. And regardless, the specific fandom experience is not generally relevant to my love of a series regardless. Some of my favorite games and anime I've barely talked about ever, because I don't think I really need to. I know some people feel like they need so much discussion and fan creations since the thing itself is not enough and I generally don't.
@DarthNocturnal What was the last big Mario game before Odyssey to have almost all new NPC/enemy characters? M&L Dream Team? That's the best I can think of right now.

Another game in the same vein as the western SMB2 would be kinda nice. Different characters with more unique abilities, a villian other then Bowser... heck, make Bowser playable.
Actually, that's fairly close to what Super Paper Mario did. But with less vegetable throwing.
Yes. 2D, at least four playable characters (they could throw in Rosalina, Yoshi, and/or Wario as unlockable characters), vegetable throwing, Shy Guys, and (of course) Birdo. Make it happen.
Super Mario Odyssey storyline was not as strong as Sly Cooper 2 storyline.
Sly 2 has one of the best storylines of any non-RPG game and even some RPGs like Pokemon. Super Mario Odyssey doesn't stand up at all. The best comparison from my experience would be Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga to Sly 2. Some of the Paper Mario games have the depth, but not the pacing to match well with Sly 2.
I miss the Sly Cooper games and would love to see them as a collection on the Switch. I've only ever owned one Sony console, the PlayStation 2, and Sly 2 is my favorite game from that time. Actually, Sly 2 and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga were probably my favorite games overall before I really got into the Nintendo DS era Nintendo games.
Whether a game being supported for a long time is better than multiple sequels in the same timespan depends on the type of game. Games where story is a major part of the game are more suited to the sequels model meanwhile games that don't really have a story are more suited to the supporting 1 game for a very long time model.
So for example while I do think it's really odd that it took 5 years to announce MK8 Deluxe DLC, in general the Booster Course Pass is a better outcome than a Mario Kart 9 being announced.

I see where you're coming from and I kind of agree with this. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is already the Switch's best-selling game and it's got a massive install base, plus the DLC's a heck of a lot cheaper than any AAA game. I'd love a Mario Kart 9 myself, but I'm thinking it's best for Nintendo's next console.
