@Losermagnet I mean, i actually prefer it that way, otherwise people complain about it being too simplistic. You can easily beat this game without diving too deep into all the combat moves but it is there if you want to get into it, i think its done pretty well and personally i can't get enough of majimas dancing style anyways

@Solaine I get why people would like complexity, and Yakuza 0 gets away with it because you dont actually need to do any of it. You can light attack and strong attack your way through the whole game. But therein lies the problem for me: the enemies can all be dispatched more or less the same way, and there's no incentive to buying more moves (that I won't use) on their upgrade chart. So I'm carrying around 5,000,000 yen with Majima because I feel like it's a waste to spend it on very situational moves. But there's not much else to spend that much money on.
In other words Yakuza 0 competes with itself a bit for me. The combat is just okay, not great, and a bit repetitive. But it's the main backbone of the series. However, I'd rather play the Club Czar mini game than fight.

@Losermagnet Fair enough, actually i would love more rhythm game styles as battle mechanics. If done right, it can be a blast to play through since it is quite skill based and features a great track to play in the background. Guess i found my unpopular opinion of the day now: Wanting a rhythm based spinoff of Zelda, Xenoblade or really any game with good music.

@Solaine i'd be down with that. I think Yakuza could transition nicely into a rhythm-fighting thing since the music changes when your fighting style changes. It could be like a scene from Baby Driver lol.

@AegisPrime Third-party exclusives pretty much don't exist anymore, with a few exceptions. Nearly everything gets ported off to other platforms after a year or so. And I don't see that trend changing.
Currently Playing: Yakuza 0: Director's Cut (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
The Wii U was amazing.
Animal Crossing Sucks.
Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is boring.
Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity is Fun. (Maybe not that unpopular.)
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is boring.
The Switch Online + Expansion Pack is cheap and great quality.
An that’s it.

@minecraftemery What universe are you living in to think the Switch Online expansion pack is good? It's just paying a more expensive price for crappy online and crappy quality emulation. The only reason it's more expensive is because they included the DLC for New Horizons, so that they could drive the price up, since they figured people weren't paying enough for online offerings that are deemed as the worst in the industry.

I wouldn't say that. There's a few high profile third party games included with it that aren't cheap for Nintendo. I mean people are still buying the Genesis Sonic games and Microsoft knows Banjo means a lot to Ninty players.
Not really sure how unpopular this is, but after watching both TGA & the recent Indie World and not really finding that much in either of them that excites me, I feel like I'm in some sort of weird no man's land when it comes to gaming tastes.
I certainly enjoy gaming, but my tastes tend to shift to Nintendo's first party output (definitely not an unpopular opinion here), and AA games (lots of JRPGs, quirky Japanese games, & a few western titles).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

To be fair, a lot of those trailers were bad and boring (more just boring for the indie trailers), so its hard to say the games' actual quality. (especially since the former trailers over-relied on CG that said nothing about what the game is actually like)
Now i keep hearing how important gameplay is in games, but i like to think that i am weighing music, setting, atmosphere and story over the actual gameplay. A Game that is only good at its mechanics seems incredibly boring to me if i can't get invested in the world, while i would have some trouble but still be pretty invested into the world. Of course there is a limit in how bad it can get i guess, but i have yet to see that happen.

BioShock is my all time favourite game, but I don't think it's a fun shooter to play, at all. It's the setting, atmosphere, sound and lighting design, narrative, performances etc that all make that game so special. I replay it more than any other game, and not to fire a shotgun or have a fist full of lightning, it's just to be in Rapture again. Soaking in that world.
@Solaine To me "gameplay" includes all of those things too though; how the player interacts with the environment through level design, sound design, art style, story etc all ads to the gameplay IMO.
If you are talking purely about how a game controls then I think it probably depends on the genre as to how important each of those things are to making a great , or even good game - platformers and shoot 'em ups etc rely on having good controls, but not so much on the story for example - nobody ever played a Mario platformer for the story 😃 RPGs are probably the opposite, they can get away with some dodgy controls if the rest is quality. I think great games need a combination of most of those elements - I can't think of many that are great because they have just one or two.
@dmcc0 Well, i guess we gotta define gameplay first if we want to compare since you described is as something like the whole package of a game. I mean, saying it like that i totally agree that obviously the best game is the one that is equally good at anything be it controls, story and so on.
What i meant by gameplay was that action that translates from the player to the game and i do like less of that too, but that is not the opinion i was trying to bring across.
I guess what i am really trying to say is that i can forgive worse gameplay(for example like the original Nier) a lot easier in exchange for a good story or music.

I played One Finger Death Punch, which confirmed forever for me that you do in fact, only need the gameplay part to be really good to have a good game.
@Pizzamorg I feel the same way about Resident Evil Remake, which I play at least once a year. The gameplay is a bit dated by today's standards, but I just love wandering the halls of the Spencer Mansion. It's just dripping with atmosphere.
