@AndrasLOHF I sort of agree. I don't hate open world games, but at the same time I feel like there's just some stuff you can't really do with an open world format, and the fact that so many games that aren't suited for the format are trying to force themselves into said format just feels off.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika I've actually been meaning to ask you about this whole Horizon thing: I'm not quite sure what you're referring to? Forbidden West seems to have been received really well, Zero Dawn is highly regarded as one of the best modern open-world games of the last console generation and the only thing I could possibly see this referencing is this potential Zero Dawn ''''''remake'''''' (in HEAVY quotation marks) for PS5.
Haven't played any Horizon games though so I'm probably missing something very important here.
My open world game I played this year was Arkham Knight, which is also a very good open world game where if literally anyone called it GOTY it'd be a joke. (though its easier to say that since its (mostly) obviously worse than the first 2 games in that series)
There are games that can just be what it is and be top tier gaming for me. But I'd certainly be surprised to get into the Horizon games and think Horizon 2 is a Twilight Princess or a Trials and Tribulations (I should've said Galaxy 2 now that I think about it, that's the go to safe sequel that everyone agrees is a masterpiece).
@Fizza It just kind of became the poster child for anti-open world people to crap on myself included. The first one came out days before Botw and it’s sequel came out days before elden ring. Both genera shifting open world games and Horizon learned nothing from BOTW and one of the Guerrilla games members complained people preferred Elden ring on Twitter furthering backlash. Then the fanbases got into a fun fanbase war thats only going to get worse thanks to the game awards
I think when a difficult game gets released the supposed gaming literati come out of the woodwork to get really upset that their hands weren't constantly held. David Jaffe had a near meltdown because he got lost in Metroid Dread.
There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.
Jaffe's crowning gaming achievement was making a multimillion dollar IP that answers the question "what if Devil May Cry was stupid and lifeless and boring?"

I'd think that if you're in the business of making games it's pretty much essential that you intensely look over what the competition is doing with a critical eye.
You just shouldn't take pot shots at them on Twitter. That's for the marketing people to do.
Also, the funny thing is that I wasn't even thinking of MGS5, because Witcher 3 was also an open world game everyone would think is GOTY in 2015, so Arkham Knight wouldn't even be the 2nd most notable open world game that year. :V
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika That's a shame. I've never played Ori as it seems too slow paced (and the art style is overhyped imo) but I'm currently playing through Hollow Knight and enjoying it quite a bit.

I'm probably going to be pushed off the platform for saying this, seeing as everyone on the internet right now outright hates them, but I really like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and feel like they're the first actual good pokemon games in years. From what I've played, I've thoroughly enjoyed, even with the technical flaws present. I also kind of feel like, at least from what I've played, the technical issues are pretty massively overblown in a way. Sure, you have the performance issues (which is pretty much determined to be memory leak issues that you can fix by saving and quitting the game), but as for massive bugs, I haven't really come across that many. Not to the extent that I keep seeing people claim online at least. The worst I've had was like a crash at the electric gym, and then reality blipping away twice towards the beginning.
Again, I'm pretty much awaiting comments from people telling me that this isn't acceptable, or that I should feel bad for enjoying the games, given that's pretty much what I've been told ever since I got my copy yesterday, but I just still feel like the gameplay and story really outshine all the issues on the technical side of things.

@VoidofLight I mean I probably won't buy the game, but I fully believe that it's better than all the mainline Pokémon games in recent years. I don't know about New Pokemon Snap or Arceus since I haven't played that or Scarlet/Violet, but still, Scarlet and Violet are probably better than Sword and Shield.
Pokemon games shouldn't be in their current form. I'm not exactly sure what form they should be in, but I feel like the traditional Pokemon formula isn't lining up well with a 3D open world. I don't like the "flurry of Pokeballs" gameplay of Arceus, but I feel like it's a better fit for the format than a game about turn-based level grinding. I think maybe the Let's Go feature should have been the only method of battling random Pokemon: it's kind of annoying to have to stop moving. Instead of every turn in the battle being a separate decision give us "strategies" we can plan ahead of time. And a 3D open world should be about the avatar/PC doing the platforming: they shouldn't just be a rider of the actual terrain explorer.
I still don't feel excited with DLC Booster Wave 3 from Mario Kart as I felt the business practice like that by overmilking one franchise was not quite right.
Pokemon Scarlet / Violet was the first game I suddenly have bad impression after I saw the unprofessionalism from Gamefreak in making the game and I changed my mind to not getting the game, I will consider Pokemon clones instead (Yokai Watch games, Nexomon, etc) for better ideas.
I have never shown a dissatisfaction like that before.
@Anti-Matter It’s Mario kart, and the dlc is vary cheap for what you get tbh, sure they are dragging it out, and yes the stages are not of the same quality, but for the price, the amount of stages, with said stages looking just fine, on top of them being fun to play! I think it’s worth it, but people money are peoples money, might not be to others.
Pokémon diamond and pearl remakes where just fine, they were enjoyable, and they stayed really true to the originals, gamrefreak passed the remake up to another company, which, kinda sucks since they took all the heat, and all they did was remake it. Sure they could have changed stuff here and there, but for someone who never played them before, I had a blast. Oh and sword and shield where fun Pokémon games, not perfect, but I do think they are enjoyable.
