I've been thinking a lot about this lately and want to start this topic. Just post things in the near or far future you think wont exist anymore. Ill get it started off.

Gas stations. It might still take awhile but in our lifetime we should see them eventually disappear
Video stores. I haven't rented a video or video game in years.
Video game magazines. I still love to read them but with the internet most of the info in them is outdated by the time you read them.
Video game stores. It will be maybe another generation before we wont need them anymore. Its just cheaper for the companies to offer download only and the PSP go is just the first example of that. I will miss them for sure but it's the way of the future.

Debate them if you want but its a few I believe wont exist in the coming years.

DVD's. Blu Ray is replacing them just like DVD's replaced video cassettes.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

There will always be a demand for physical media.
If anything the PSP Go goes for this claim rather than against, considering how abysmal it's done.

Pretty much everything. Then I can pull my pants up to my armpits, sit in a rocking chair and complain about how the world is going to hell in a hand basket and everything was better in my time.

Yeah but everything has to start somewhere. I believe the next Gen of PlayStation and Xbox will offer both download full games and purchase but after that it will be download only. If its a problem with someone not owning internet then some stores will offer a service for a small fee to download a game. It just make sense in my opinion and is cheaper for the companies to offer download only. 10 years it will happen. Just look at the cell phone market and its just booming with just that!!

Funny thing is I have to wear a hat at work and I've had a mustache since I was 12!

@JamesNewton I agree it will be a while still but yeah it will happen in our lifetime.

That's my thought too. Physical media will die out within 2 console cycles. Physical media is already obsolete for music. It's really just audiophiles/hipsters buying vinal/cds now. Now that you're seeing lossless digital files, it's not going to be long before it'll only be collectors buying physical albums. Blu-Ray's pretty much a waste of time, since internet speeds/memory storage are really starting to make streaming/1080p movie file storage possible. It will really just depend on how quickly we can make good broadband universal. There are still large areas of the country without true broadband, I believe, in rural areas.

What else will become obsolete? Pretty much everything except eating, death, and taxes. Clothes will become obsolete, but if you leave them in your closet for about 30 years, they'll be similar to the current style again. Of course, it all depends on how much longer you live.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Physical products will always remain. A huge reality check is the PSN outage that has compromised so much private and personal information.

How is that any different from say you're house gets robbed.
It's not like you lose the games you bought online in an event like PSN hack. You'll still have all your purchases, even if they are lost you can go through customer service and get them back.

If you weren't insured on you home, well that's a different and worse story.

Retail will go away, but it's really up to the Internet providers as they are trying to milk as much possible money out of people. They are really holding back streaming services like OnLive and online videos.

I have photos and journals stored on 5¼-inch floppy disks back 'home' at my mother's house in the US. Right now I don't even have a computer that can run a floppy disk. I really should make efforts to recover the media on them.

How is getting your house broken into different then someone accessing your information online?
Really? You have to ask that?
For one, the thief has to break into your home without anyone noticing, and manually haul what he wants out.
For a hacker, he sits on his couch eating hot dogs, and can pull out anytime. He's in the safety of his own home, and doesn't have to do any physical work, where a real thief has to.
Also, with online crap, it's generally reversible quite easily, someone breaking your door however, now leaves you with a broken door you have to watch until it is repaired.

I think soon enough they'll just put a chip in your brain that allows you to connect to the internet with your mind.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

I wouldn't be surprised if physical media ceases to exist but I hope this doesn't happen. I like going out to shops to buy games and putting them in my pile of home console games aor putting the box in my pile of handeld games (I know that sounds kinda wierd) or the excitement when a game I ordered online arrives.
