Okay, I swear Kiff's VA also voiced Kari in "Digimon" and that weird cat-thing from "Kingdom Hearts III" and "Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory" but apparently that isn't true.
I’ve just finished The Bear after hearing all the hype, is so fudging good. The best way to put it is the show is actually alive.
It has this amazing rhythm so it knows when to be frantic so you can feel the anxiety and fast paced nature of a kitchen building up so when it finally does breathe it lets those moment hit even if it's something as simple as a smoke in the alley or it’s more heartfelt moment. It's so well scripted, written and acted it could pass as (good) reality TV whilst not taking away it's big drama writing with it’s themes and progression only with nuanced subtle acting. The soundtrack slaps too and knows how to use the right songs at the right moment.
The Bear is terrific, and absolutely blew away my expectations. The penultimate episode (#7?) where 'everything goes wrong' is probably one of the most stressful experiences of my life ha!
It does a great job of managing to have some heart as well, without getting overly cheesy or preachy.
I have a solid recommendation for you if you loved The Bear - which is a move called "Boiling Point". It came out 2021/22 and is a British film shot in 1 take, and follows a real-time 90 minute stint in a London restaurant. It stars the amazing Stephen Graham, and is basically like a more stressful extension of Bear's penultimate episode.
@CJD87 Yeah I saw Boiling Point already. It was one of my favourite films from last year too, so bloody good! It took me for a surprise as I just put in on as a whim after scrolling through some options. The one shot real time structure is perfect for something like a kitchen as you can't walk away from it not matter how hard or intense it is in that moment. Apparently they are making it as a series now.
it did pop into my head how similar it is to The Bear beyond being set in a kitchen in how they capture the frantic chaos unlike say Jon Favreau's Chef. Nothing against Chef by the way, it was the first cooking movie that popped into my head.
That penultimate episode is amazing. I was proper torn at the pastry chef as I really liked the guy. On one hand I'm so happy he figured out his doughnut but on the other WHY THE FUDGE IS HE NOT DOING WHAT HE IS MEANT TO BE DOING AT A TIME LIKE THIS!?!?! I’m all up for season 2 to come out now.
@jump Ah sweet well glad you saw BP and loved it as much as I did!
Yeh I lost all sympathy with the pastry chef in that episode also. When Carmy loses the plot and screams at him "WHY ARE YOU F**KING WITH ME? WHY NOW, WHY TODAY?"....! Total sympathy went to Carmy in that scene!
