@MarioLover92 On Shovel Knight: most of the stages weren't terrible once I learned them, but I had a heck of a time with Tinker Knight's stage. The pits and INSTA-DEATH SPIKES (will someone please explain to me why those were a good idea?) were extremely irritating.
I'd rack up all 99 lives in the first few levels of Super Mario World, usually ranging from most of Yoshi's Island to Donut Plains 1. I became pretty efficient with using Cape Mario. XD
@TheJGG I've noticed you playing through Metroid Dread! Hope you're enjoying the game; it's one I want to get to within the next month or two. I've owned a physical copy since Christmas.
@Fizza Love that VMAX art. I recently sorted through and organized all my old cards in a binder and am seriously thinking about getting back into collecting Pokemon cards again. If only to get my hands on some of the gorgeous VMAX and alt art cards.
@tekoii To be fair, unless I'm REALLY yelling, most of my neighbors wouldn't hear me anyway lol. Most aren't too close with one exception. It still baffles me that NSO doesn't have Game Boy/Game Boy Color games, but that just means my 3DS systems still see some use!
@tekoii I do like the effects you've put on the photo. You can notice it near the edges and near the karts, the chromatic aberration is quite nice. Reflects the sci-fi nature of the karts well.
@Tyranexx It's very good; a lot better than I had ever hoped. I always took opinions on Dread with a small grain of salt since it's been a while since the last game, so people may have gotten overhyped. But suffice it to say, so far it's a really good experience. The levels are so well designed and the maps are similarly well put together. Samus' moveset is also really smooth, and the controls are good as a result.
When you do get around to it, you'll have a good time, I can guarantee. IMO it wouldn't be a crime to put the game on Easy Mode, since some of the boss fights are quite difficult. The first one in particular came when I was pretty underpowered and I barely made it! You can't change difficulties in-game though, so be careful.
I don't have an identical situation but nobody I know in the real world play any of the games I do, nor do they enjoy video games (or the ones I'm into) with the same obsessive fervour, so connecting on that level is very difficult. But hey, that's where the internet comes in.
My situation, only me that still keep pursuing video gaming hobby with consoles and handhelds while my siblings, my Mom and my family relatives have no interest in video games at all, just only play handphone games.
My siblings and cousins play PC games and handphone games but I still keep playing consoles and handhelds games, never like handphone and PC games. I still have the 90's and 2000's gamer spirit despite I am 37 years old.
A good chunk of my friends and family are into gaming, including myself of course. I do have a friend in real life who isn't into games, and we've been getting along quite well. As long as the person I'm chatting with isn't being an absolute jerk, it's all good - even if we have different interests and hobbies.
@Tyranexx Ah yes, good old insta-death spikes...I'm quite familiar with them and they are indeed a tad infuriating. They're real common in the Mega Man games too. Kiss poor Mega Man goodbye if he even touches them, and in MM1, even invincibility frames won't save him. At least they changed that for the later games!
That's cool. I normally just beat the levels and that's it. So I'd rack up lives as the game goes on. I'm quite decent at using Cape Mario too, I used to have a hard time using the Cape Feather as a kid, but it eventually clicked with me.

Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I'd like to know you first. Thanks! ❤️
@Tyranexx No. They must hear you and Kirby lol XD. Why is there no GB-GBC-GBA games on Switch? It'd be a great tier to have in the NSO. We can still hold on to hope that they could come thru lol. Yea, I'm actually looking into playing some more games on my 3DS.
@TheJGG Thank you, yea I wanted to spice up the picture a little bit while keeping the general simplicity. I kept that effect a little more on the side of subdued but that's to ensure it doesn't distract from the overall image. Quite happy with the piece and I'm excited to work on more
@Sunsy Great racing with you and @MarioLover92 ! Next time let's do some battles Somehow it's gotten my mind on us playing Mario Party... though I don't own it. Do you have it? I know MarioLover does. Aye. Maybe some day, but for now more races and battles > I was thinking maybe to play some tonight while it's still the weekend xD.
We're gonna play some more MK8D at 7pm EDT.. lmk if u wanna join!!
Happy Easter to all in this thread who celebrate it!
@TheJGG After I played Metroid: Samus Returns, I had the utmost confidence that MercurySteam would deliver on Dread when it was announced. From what limited feedback I've allowed myself access to, I think they've delivered in spades. The series is definitely top notch for the most part, and I'm itching to jump into this entry! I appreciate the warning about the difficulty; I do like a bit of challenge with my Metroid titles, so I'll probably opt for Normal mode. Any setting above that would probably make me ragequit lol.
@MarioLover92 If Mega Man touches the spikes? More like if he SNEEZES on them! Those helped contribute to my middling opinion of those platformers. Though invincibility in MM1 makes me glad I never tried that particular title. XD
I was mostly a kid when I'd rack up lives before trying to tackle a bunch of levels I wasn't familiar with. The limited save systems of the day made this almost a necessity. I've beaten SMW more than once over the past few years, but as a kid I couldn't make it past the 4th castle. I think I might have, once, but unfortunately I had many cousins and dealt with more than one overwritten save file.
@tekoii I have no clue why GB/GBC/GBA games aren't yet on NSO, though I suspect they may make the jump...eventually. Which where Nintendo is concerned, possibly...2027 or later. XD I still use my 3DS systems occasionally and in fact just bought a couple of retail games. I had to download Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy since it's very expensive even secondhand.
@WaveBoy Don't even give them the time of day, sounds like a know at all that knows nothing at all. I think I remember someone came here and had the same problem as you, and I think I said the same thing.
@WaveBoy Yeah I agree for sure, I'd definitely introduce my future children to Nintendo games as well. My dad's pretty much done that with me, too - he was pretty huge into gaming since the Atari and NES days. He's had the SNES before I was even born and I already got intrigued by the games we've had for it. Games like Super Mario World, F-Zero, Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country, and Yoshi's Island. I'd start playing it when I was 5, I believe, alongside the N64. I've been huge into Nintendo and Mario ever since.
I had a similar experience with Mega Man 3 - when I first played it, I struggled to beat even a single level, but I really liked how they let you check out the other stages via that level select. Mega Man games are generally pretty tough, especially when you're playing them for the first time. It's kinda like the Genesis Sonic games in that regard.
@tekoii Hey thanks for having me over in Mario Kart - good games. Yeah...I'm pretty bad in Shine Thief.
@Tyranexx lol! Yeah, Mega Man 1 is pretty difficult, and is jank in certain areas. Mega Man feels like he's on ice in that game, and when you get to Dr. Wily stage 1, you can't progress further unless you have acquired the Magnet Beam in the middle of Elec Man's stage. Which, in turn, requires the Super Arm you'd get after beating Guts Man. A fine example of great game design, huh?
Oh I can't blame you, especially since SMW is one of those Mario games that don't save how many lives you've gotten. (Unless you're playing the GBA version, I believe.) Ah man, sorry to hear. It's no fun having to start from scratch like that.
Thanks to you and @Snatcher! I hope you had a good Easter as well if you celebrate it. Otherwise, hope you had a good day.

@Tyranexx I would put the game on Rookie, but to be honest the part of the game that I'm struggling the most are the EMMI sections. I've always been poor at stealth sections in games, so evading them is challenging! I realise in practice it shouldn't be that hard, because you have a radar that indicates the EMMI's field of vision, and the range in which it can hear you, but still. It's different for everyone though, and the EMMI sections aren't deterrents at all.
Can't wait to hear how your experience goes when you get to it. I'm hoping by that time I'd have at least beaten the game!
@tekoii An idea you could use... a montage of your races. Could be a fun editing exercise.
@tekoii It feels like Nintendo's plan for GB/GBC/GBA/DS is remakes as there's been a sizeable amount of those in the past 5 years between 3DS and Switch rather than the usual only Pokemon situation (Pokemon remakes have been happening since 2004).
Have a nice day. Voiceactor: The Pirates! (Sony/Aardman 2012) - The Passion: A Brickfilm (Neema 2019) - The Torchlighters: The Story of John Newton (Vision Video 2022) - [NEW] Minno's Laugh and Grow Bible (Minno - 2024)
Pardon the somewhat brief responses. Not feeling the best RN.
@MarioLover92 Yeah, I've heard the stage design in Mega Man 1 is all over the place lol. I know a lot of people have a ton of nostalgia for those old platformers, but IMO a fair amount of them troll the player to up the challenge...which I consider a lazy way to go about it. I do believe SMW only has 4 or 5 lives per file load on the SNES. Can't speak for any other versions however.
I hope you had a great Easter as well! Mine was good, just busy.
@TheJGG I enjoy stealth in games, though how much depends on genre and implementation. I suspect I'll both love and hate the EMMI sections depending on my mood. XD
I'm fairly certain you'll finish the game before I get to it, but I really do hope to start it soon.
@MarioLover92 Pretty much, honestly I like it here. Only difference is brother's going to help a bit with the place now.
Yeah, I thought Macs were a bit more common in the 90's. I remember going to a local newspaper press on field trip, and they all used Macs for publishing the paper at the time, and the schools had Macs.
Yup, it's just a really cool look.
@tekoii It was, between the Trolls theme and the Sonic 2 movie, it really was a special birthday this year. Most years, it's just gifts and a character themed cake. This year, my friend had table with a balloon of Poppy (if you don't know Trolls, she's the pink troll in my avatar) on a chair like she's sitting at the party, with Trolls themed napkins and cups, and a cake with Poppy on it, and watched the first Trolls movie. Then two days later, the Sonic 2 movie.
The birthday gifts included a Poppy pillow pet, a Moxy Uglydoll plush (friend and I watched the movie and enjoyed it despite popular opinion), a Trolls book, and eShop cards which I used on the Mario Kart DLC and the Paladins battle pass.
Paladins Cross-play is usually easy, just add a friend and join their party. I've played Paladins on Switch with a PC and Xbox player on my team. It was very easy to party up too. Been playing it more lately, gotta earn them battle pass rewards. Liking the futuristic look of the Monstercat pass.
It was fun racing you and @MarioLover92. I only have Super Mario Party, afraid I don't have the latest one. Apologies for not joining last night, was spending Easter with mom. We watched a few movies together.
