Eww, Tree cutting. My parent's house is surrounded on 3 sides by trees including a HUGE pine tree in front of my old bedroom (I used to go sit in the den when we had bad hurricanes. I was convinced that was how I was going die.) Tree is still standing with no issues...of course. If trees can laugh, that one had a few chuckles at me.
As for the other trees around the house my dad used to let the horses knock em down. They strip the bark to snack on and then back scratch on the tree trunks... Pop goes in with a chainsaw later to clean up what was left...free firewood for the winter. (I don't miss chopping wood)
@bimmy-lee Oh I love homemade planes. I have one that I've made myself. Just a bench plane but it cuts like butter. Granted I'm using a Ron Hock iron so that is part of it. (I'm getting WAY better at sharpening without a honing guide) I bought some Japanese irons (way cheaper than buying a plane) but I've not had the time to build new planes with them. Still working through a box of chisels that I am refurbishing. Although I got one very nice paring chisel out of it that I love. Perhaps in a few years I'll crank out the cash for a really nice Japanese chisel set, but right now I feel that you have to be worthy of the tools, so these old hand me downs given new life work well for me. I do think once I get a house though that I will at least buy a small electric planer. Maaaaaybe a mini lathe because I like to make pens. Otherwise, I hope to remain mostly hand tools. I love that I can wood work anywhere. (mostly I mean I'm not the jerk sawing at 3am...although I do layouts at that time if I can't sleep) Although I'm getting a little creeped out by my saw collection. up to 12 hand saws now. Once I get my student loans licked ...its going to be bad. I'm trying not to be a collector though so only buying what I use...but it is still gonna be bad.

@ThanosReXXX lol. I do use working hands. It’s actually available and easy to find locally here in most boots store (pharmacy) and supermarkets. Thanks 👍🏻
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
@1UP_MARIO o’Keefe’s? That stuff is great for me. The skin on my thumb and sides of my index fingers, where you hold all the pens and screwdrivers gets dry after hand work

@NEStalgia - I’ve been lucky to only have to pay for four ash to come down so far. There’s a white oak too close to the house though, and I think it’s into the foundation. I have friends in low places and can usually get it done cheaper than it might otherwise be. Still very expensive though. The red oak sounds like it was a lot of hard work. Cutting up trees is exhausting. At this point, I’ve missed my window to get my weed eater. I’ll finish up my research and get something tomorrow morning. I’ll let you know what I decide, but now I’m leaning electric.
@ThanosReXXX - Well, someone tried a drive by on our friend using fightin words earlier, and it couldn’t go unchecked. Instead of apologizing, they deleted the comments, so now it looks like I was having a minor argument with the boogey man. It was silly.
Good catch, yes, I meant Amiga. I was rather proud of my “Den of the Dutch Destroyer” suggestion for a chit chat thread Smash arena.
@HobbitGamer - Pure terror. You survive the chain, and then you’re left hacking at a tree without reeeeeally knowing which way it’s going at that point. It’s probably falling the way you think, but now there’s variables. Glad it worked out for you.
@Ryu_Niiyama - What a cool hobby! I like anything handmade. Anything. Do you take custom orders? I need two impossibly small end tables for each side of my bed. I’m with you on earning the tools as well. I’ve had my eye on an expensive pair of concave pruners from Japan for years, and I just can’t pull the trigger because my skill level doesn’t warrant such fine instruments yet.
....every time i pop in this thread, there’s some sort of construction talk going on. are we all just construction workers who happen to be secret nintendo enthusiasts?
@bimmy-lee At the moment no, as I'm building furniture for my place/future place. Working on a dresser now. lol. Besides, since I am an apartment woodworker I can only work on the weekends (which are busy as well) so it takes me a bit to get pieces done. I only have two end tables, a sitting bench and a toolbox done (which I gotta make like 4 more to hold my saws and planes...sigh woodworking is a worse drug than gaming.)
Also I'm switching to kumiko training (currently reading everything written by Des King) so that eventually when I get a house I'm going to put up shoji screens EVERWHERE lol. So I really just spend most of my time right now buying basswood and making kumiko with it to get the dimensions down. I need to get back on that half clamped up dresser...
Yeah I read Odate Toshio's book when I got back into it (I used to make arcade fightsticks and stopped because I didn't have a space to work, now I'm into furniture/taiko stands/kumiko) and there is a story he tells about him saving up and buying a really expensive plane. He had to hide it from the rest of his team (including his father who was his Master) and he forgot to put it up one night and his dad took it from him. However his takeaway from that was that the plane wasn't being used because it was essentially an expensive treasure for him and he was nowhere near skillful enough to use it. (wood planes are as finicky as people sometimes. I have one that takes a few hours for me to set it properly but it smooths quite well despite being a cheap plane. Not to knock cheap planes. I took a 5 dollar harbor freight plane and turned it into a scrub plane and it is a fricken workhorse.)
That being said that is why I learned to make my own...drop all the cash in good iron and chipbreaker (if your plane has one) and just keep the sole true and the white oak blank isn't that expensive...so you end up with a plane a few paygrades above what you paid because it wasn't machined. And you really learn a lot about planes in the process.
I will say it doesn't take much to get into wood working. You can start off with cheap tools if the wood is relatively soft (I don't go harder than red oak...well I take that back I have some small strips of purple heart that I use on occasion but I mostly use poplar, cherry and red or white oak.)...even if you are a power tool user just wait until the father's day sales, buy an ok set of chisels and put your money in your measuring marking tools and you are good. (and you can ebay the measuring marking tools. I have a starrett level and machinist's level that I got for cheap on ebay. Well cheap for a starrett.) I'm still a novice though. So much to learn.
Aww don't get me started. I can wax on about hand tools all day. Yet my father can't fix anything...thank goodness the women are the handy ones in my family. Except cars. Just because I know somebody is going to crack that joke.

@Matthew010 You're welcome. Turns out you just chose the wrong link to paste in your comment.
When you upload to PostImage, ALWAYS choose the direct link, to use and post a picture somewhere else.
@bimmy-lee Yeah, I was able to extract that from what I've read (I read all the pages I was behind on, as I always do), I just wondered what it was exactly, although the comment was also partly in jest, because in all honesty, I'm not really all that curious what the actual content of the discussion was.
P.S.
Den of the Dutch Destroyer?

@Ryu_Niiyama - Kumiko art is beautiful. So many little measurements and cuts. That was a nice story about Odate’s planer. I can remember an episode of Mister Rogers where a guy turned a log into a djembe drum using basically only a pickaxe/hatchet type instrument that looked like it used to be part of a horse drawn plow. I’ve had a fascination ever since. You certainly have a passion for woodworking and it’s tools, I hope it’s something you continue to develop.
@ThanosReXXX - HobbitGamer made a Smash arena for people in this thread to do battle, and we were contemplating a proper name for the arena. One of my suggestions (based on the folks who chat here and topics we chat about) was Den of the Dutch Destroyer.
Wait a minute, in typing that, I realized you might not see Thanos as a destroyer of worlds. Maybe you see the other side of that coin and just consider him a really, really good partner for Lady Death?
