Topic: Switch Online.. worth it?

I was thinking of subscribing mainly as a reason to upgrade Botw/Totk for free (yet to buy) but if you can play a bunch of other retro goodies as well on Switch 2, then I don't think the price is that bad overall.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

@Dhaladog I think if you're not able to join a family group then the individual price is still pretty worth it for what you get out of it, especially if you actually play games online. Splitting a family membership makes it crazy cheap though.

@BenAV I'm a loner gamer and don't play online, but it still seems like good value especially for the 2 Zelda game upgrades, now I just have to find myself some cheap copies!

@Dhaladog Yeah for sure. The expansion pack was a little lacking when it first came out but I think it's gotten to the point that it's pretty decent now. I've never really taken advantage of the Nintendo Classics so far as I'm not a big retro gamer despite growing up with those systems but there are definitely some GameCube games I might go back and play on Switch 2.

It really depends on how much you enjoy playing retro games, but it's been more than worth it for me. I'm on a family plan, so in the end I'm paying less than the individual price, but even then the majority of my game time last year was spent in the Classics apps. That on top of the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart and the Animal Crossing DLC that my kid adores, I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it, and I can't tell you the last time I played a game online!

(I can, actually. It was last week doing ranked matches on Pokémon TCG Pocket to qualify for a participation award. I hated it.)

If you're just thinking it would be useful for upgrading BOTW and TOTK, then maybe the up front cost of the upgrades would be more economically feasible for you, especially if you want to "own" them rather than essentially "rent" them. But if you think you'd have even passing fun with the other goodies on offer, I truly believe it's worth the asking price.

If you don't buy many newer games, sure.

The classic catalogues offer a lot for a little.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,529 games (as of November 20th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 3 games (as of November 23rd, 2025)

You get what you pay for basically.

The only positive I can give about the online is it's cheap pricing and that's about it.
The retro catalogue years later is still mediocre and a higher catalogue is locked behind a bigger paywall. Not to mention Nintendo is still years behind online feature wise.

If you don't care about the retro games and just want to play online then yeah it's probably going to be garbage but eh what can you do.

Good... good
Now play Dragon Quest

Had it from the start. Mainly use it for online gaming and cloud saves. Haven’t used much for the classic games. GameCube will be interesting to play around for a bit. It’s super cheap when shared in a family sub so I say it’s worth it and more

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

I’ve had NSO since I got my Switch ~2018/9

Also signed up to the ‘Expansion Pass’ from day1 (N64 titles etc)

I’d say that the value for money wasn’t particularly great a few years back, but I played a ton of MHRise online - which sort of justified it for me

However, and assuming no price increase(?), it’s a great offer for Switch2 owners. Everything we already get + Switch2 upgrades (BOTW/TOTK) + GameCube library + chat … seems a much better deal

I would be wanting to own the Zelda upgrades, so maybe a subscription isn't the best option for me after all.

Had it from the start. Selling points for me are price (I pay monthly for gamepass ultimate), retro games and DLC. I don’t play games with other people anymore so I never use online.

Worth it and a NO BRAINER if you can start or join a family sub with a few people and share the cost. You can find people here to pal up with. I had no one I knew to make one with really, but @1UP_Mario let me join his. (Super grateful for this still, thanks man!). Works out a real bargain.

I have put in probably over 200 hours of gaming across the NSO classic games.

@Dhaladog Basic NSO has always been a good deal I feel with the 100s of snes/nes/gb games plus cloud share and online play. Personally, Expansion Pack never felt worth it to me in the past, but the addition of GameCube and the Switch 2 Zelda updates will likely change my mind.

If you're not excited by GameCube or online though, probably better just to pay $20 for the Switch 2 upgrades of BotW/TotK.
