If this was a blog, since I don't have one, the title would read : "Companies should be striving to implement online and offline and splitscreen online play...seriously..."
As a Wii and PS3 owner i must say the ONLY Xbox game series i have ever envied is Halo (WHAATT???? yah i know) just because of the sheer amounts of multiplayer modes/ replay value there is....seriously: Offline local co-op and competitive, online co-op and competitive, splitscreen - online co-op and competitive multiplayer lol seriously there is so much multiplayer content.
To be honest, I think game companies need to realize offline, online and splitscreen for both offline and online as well is the way to go in making the best multiplayer experience possible. You can have friends at your house play with you, friends/gamers over the internet, and both friends with you and over the internet at the same time. It baffles me as to why it seems Halo is one of the few games to have ever done this that I know about and has received adequate praise for it (however I think modnation racers has done this and mario kart wii as well...I can't remember for mario kart exactly).
However, just using Halo as my example since its such a widely known game, I think more games in the future need to look at multiplayer from both the offline and online spectrums, its the best and I would think most obvious thing to do. I know it takes hard work and all, but thats why we pay for the games and give the game developers money for their hard work.
Multiplayer is such a deciding factor for me in buying a game though since I have a brother at home, my neighbour next door, and then friends in other areas away from me so the offline and online both in one game thing is really important to me. So, not trying to be harsh or unmindful of the game developers, I just feel this way
I agree with you totally, but next time, split this up into seperate paragraphs. No one enjoys reading walls of text.
Games that do this well is SSBB, MKWii, and Castle Crashers on XBLA. The only time I ever buy a single player game is when its really long, (like a mario platformer or zelda game.)
One of the reasons I love the Wii so much is because of its focus on local multiplayer. Now, the PS3 however, could use some work in that department.
One of the reasons I love the Xbox360 so much is because of its great online multiplayer. Now, the Wii however, could use some work in that department.
Local AND online multiplayer should be implemented in any multiplayer (retail) game whenever possible. I appreciate the local multiplayer of New Super Mario Bros for example but I would also expect an online mode nowadays. I don't like when developers just go the easy way especially when high sales are guaranteed (Mario + platformer = money, money, money) and developing costs are obviously low (comparing to other Wii games like SMG, Zelda, MP3, Metroid: Other M).

Mario online would likely lag like crazy, there is a lot to transfer across the internet, unlike Mario Kart and Halo. Also, how were the developing costs low at all?
