Topic: So I just got braces...

So I just got braces earlier today. At first they didn't seem too bad, but now my teeth hurt so badly that I can't even chew. I tried eating a hamburger, but it hurt too badly to chew even the bread, so i just had to suck on individual pieces and drench them with saliva until they broke down enough for me to choke them down. _{Yeah, that's pretty frickin' gross, sorry}

But I bet these new-fangled braces are a hell of a lot better than older ones. At the very least, I don't have to wear head gear. So what are your experiences with braces? And how long will it take until I can actually eat solid foods again?

@briun - 2 days and that'll go away. My teeth hurt something fierce at first too--and they will every time you go in for an appointment and have them tightened. (Less so each time).

My teeth were as close to not-needing-braces as teeth can get, so I'm assuming my experience was tamer than most (got them 13 years ago--got them off 11 years ago). You won't even notice the difference anymore in a week.

Then when you get them off, ladies do double-takes for months. It's pretty awesome

I never needed braces, but my ex-girlfriend had them.

Anyways, I'm sure you'll get used to it, probably just takes time.

My teeth were pretty messed up when before braces. Now I has a perfect smile. My teeth were going all over the place, needed a plate to expand my jaw, then braces for the rest. Got my plate put in my mouth in 2002, got my braces off in 2009. You probably won't have to wait that long, but the pain is all worth it in the end.

I never had to have braces but I did just have two teeth removes the other day.

Yikes. D: I got two teeth pulled before when I was around 5. It was on a Saturday, so all the good dentists were closed and I went to some back alley dentist who didn't even give me painkiller. He just went in with some tool and yanked both my teeth out. And that's why I'm scared of dentist offices nowadays.

My orthodontist put me through two different phases; during the first phase, I had braces, only on my top teeth, and a permanent retainer on the roof of my mouth. My braces were removed after a year and I had them off for about 2 years; yep, I wore a retainer during this time. During the second phase, I had braces on my top and bottom teeth, which was not nearly as bad as the permanent retainer. Now they're off and I am satisfied.

Yeah usually when I have teeth work done I have to go under cause Novocaine just doesnt work for me. But I know how you feel Briunji my wife had a bad dentist experience when she was a kid and now it nearly impossible to get her to see a dentist.

After a week or so a hamburger will be no problem. Just take it easy for a bit, your teeth will toughen up. :3

i get mine off in about 4 months:) and i cant wait. ive had them for almost 2 years and i want them off so bad. braces arent that bad, its just you look better without them. i have a lot of teeth issues but my teeth were straight to begin with, the only reason i had braces was to help stop a tooth from hyper erupting and i had a very slight over bite. so thats my drawn out story,
@briunj04 and dont worry, it gets better, but ill get worse. so just hang in there

I'll probalbly have to get braces soon so chances are i'll probably have to stock up on milk when that happens.

Dude iv had them for a few months now and at first they do hurt and when they are tightened it is sore be they will settle down then your teeth will start to feel sore that is normal that means the braces are doing there business but remember to brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep them clean.

im bored most of the day so i snack a little and after every snack i brush my teeth, so i brush my teeth around 5 to 7 times a day lol

I should have had braces, but didn't. I've been thinking about having them done now but I may just go with those Invisalign things on my top teeth since they aren't too bad. My bottom teeth are all screwed to heck due to side-growing wisdom teeth.

My son will need them soon. Can't wait to drop that wad of cash.

Before braces, my freshmen year of high school (as if I wasn't awkward enough then) I got expanders for both my top and bottom teeth. It gave me a horrible lisp AND I had to jut out my lower jaw just to attempt to say my "S's". It made German class a nightmare.

I wore braces for about a year in 2009. Every time I got them tightened every month, they would make the wire too long, so they scratched my gums. So along with it hurting to eat, it also hurt to even talk.

You'll get used to the pain, it usually subsides after about three days.

Seeing as how it's your first time, it's gonna take a while for you to get used to it. It will go away soon, but hey, nothing wrong with drinking soup through a straw.
