You do realize Final Fantasy is the least consistant series ever made?
Anywho, it's different in that characters from the main series square off in big flash fights rivaling good ol' Dragon Ball Z (Technically it's more like Advent Children, but you obviously haven't seen or heard of that).

There's 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Mario, Call of Duty, Zelda and Pokemon games, but that doesn't stop people buying those, despite the fact that, unlike Final Fantasy, each of those games are fundamentally the same thing over, and over, and over again.

Dissidia Duodecim 012 English trailer, with EX finishers from Vaan, Lady Yuna and Laguna. Vaan and Laguna made me LMAO. When Vaan's finishing his Quickening, looks like he thrusts his butt toward Gabranth and says, "stinks, huh" (may've said "stings", but funnier to think otherwise). And then there's Laguna. "NOW WE CAN PARTY"! Ultimecia got served by "THE GREATEST ATTACK EVER"!!!!! Boy this game will take about 99.9999% of the pain out of the final 5 days of waiting for 3DS!
Oh, one more thing: Box art shows Terra, Tidus and CLOUD FRIGGIN' STRIFE on Chaos' side! Cloud and Sephiroth on the same side? Easy to see why Chaos wins this battle.

Each numbered Final Fantasy (1-13) are completely separate stories with new characters in unique worlds, they're not even remotely connected to one an other. Dissidia is different because it takes the main character and villian from each of the game and puts them together in a fighting game, sort of similar to Super Smash Brothers. Pure fan service really, but a pretty good game.
As for the second game.. I'm mostly happy with the characters they picked, they went with some really great ones rather than just picking the most popular guys (I really expected Vincent and Auron). But I'm very disappointed there's no one from VI or IX, the two games I'd consider the best of the series. That alone has pushed it down in my 'must buy list'. I also think including Vaan for XII, instead of the main character was pretty silly.
