I don't see Sonic 4 as a response to NSBWii. Though i don't doubt that they held off on announcing it (or perhaps stalled development a bit) until they saw how the market would respond to NSBWii. If anything, it's a response to Mega Man 9 (and the positive reception of the Konami Rebirth games), which really mollified this whole "New Retro" thing going on in gaming now.

Besides, game "cloning" has been going on since the beginning of the arcade days -- look at all the platformers that popped up after DK, or maze/chase-games that popped up after Pac-Man. It's part of the industry. If gamers respond positively to a specific type of game, why wouldn't a developer work towards making a new kind of that game?

She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

Also, who cares if it is a direct response to NSMBW or not? If it's a good game, it will have been worth it. If it's a bad game, it will be another nail in Sonic's coffin.

I hope this game is good, I hope it's fun to play... don't really care what SEGA's exact motivation for the project was.

NSMBW was only made because the DS version sold a crap ton.
Not saying that for a fact but it quite could be the reason.

Sega are making Sonic 4 because the fans WANT a sequel....a true sequel to S3&K.
Not because of bloody NSMBW.

NSMB should have been a wiiware game anyway. They knew theyd make more money with a physical product.

Looking at the disk it doesnt use much information on it.

Been like this for years.

SEGA Superstar Racing - that is quite the clone job.

Also notice Project Needlemouse was developed in response to NSMBWii? There is a reason the teaser trailer did not even have any gameplay footage - there was none! It must be hard to be a SEGA fan these days after how it all worked out.

Its pretty easy to be a Nintendo fan. Especially these days.

Umm......you do know that's completely wrong on almost every level, right? 0_o

#1. Nintendo fans have to put up with a lot of stuff nowadays, since developers don't want to try their hand at a Wii game (mostly because of Nintendo dominating the market and that the Wii is far outmatched in technology compared to the behemoth consoles) and shovel-ware has been put out almost non-stop since the launch.

#2. While it's true that Sonic was designed to look like a clone of Mario (with both designed to look like a clone of Mickey Mouse), the gameplay aspect of of the two franchises are completely different. Mario is about platforming through various locales until you've beaten Bowser and saved the princess. Sonic is about rewarding the player with speed after some sort of platforming section. While Sonic premise is admittedly boring compared to Mario's premise, it still holds on it's own and is different.

#3. Project Needlemouse was not really a response to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It was more of a response to the B%$!#ing fanboys who wouldn't shut up about Sonic being bad. Ironically, then the fans complained about the pointless observations people had when the trailer was revealed, leading to the awesomely correct Destructoid article.

#4. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing is a Mario Kart clone. That's fact. So what? If a clone is good, then let the people who enjoy it enjoy it. Besides, the industry needs more variety nowadays anyway. It's good to see companies taking other's creations and put their own twist on it.

Sonic 4 is not a response to NSMBWii, their fans wanted a Sonic game that didn't suck, and the only way they can do that is making it 2D.

And Sega DOES do what Nintendon't. Nintendo doesn't make the best 2D platformers. Sega does.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

If Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing is a clone as far as I'm concerned. (Sega Superstars Tennis was too.)
Either way I got it today and it is as great as the reviews say it is. It is more far more polished than their tennis effort and has more fan service.

Dude, everyone back then tried to copy Mario. Sega was just the one that had the most success. And of all of them, I'd say Sonic was the most unique.

No, it's not. I don't know where you've been for the past couple of years, but several companies have tried to copy the Super Mario Kart formula, to varying degrees of success...

Wrong again, my friend. RandomWiiPlayer took the words out of my mouth on this one. It was developed in response to Sega fanboys not wanting an eye-gaugingly bad Sonic game. If it was copying NSMBWii, it would have 4-player support (which definitely will never happen, since Sega has stressed to death that Sonic will be the only playable character), and a 2.5D art style. From the looks of the teaser released on Gamespot not too long ago, it seems to be going for a hi-res 2D style.

Sonic's better than Mario, so if "SEGA does what Nintendoes", they're clearly doin' it better.
