@Bizaster His voice is honestly pretty great, and he has a lot of pretty good songs. My favorites are "Holy Diver", "Don't Talk to Strangers", and "All the Fools Sailed Away".

(Insert creative or cool phrase here.)

Bizaster

@VoidofLight cool, I’ll listen to the other two you mentioned.

@VoidofLight I like Sabbath but I wasn’t overly impressed with Dio when I saw him at a festival, I wasn’t a fan to begin with which may I explain why I didn’t enjoy it.

It would take me too long to name my favourite rock bands or all the rock bands I’ve seen. I’ve gone to about 2/3 festivals a year plus 20+ gigs a year as well as unknown indie band nights at clubs since I was a kid.

But what I’ve been listening today so far is;

Frank Turner, he was in an underground punk band but when they split up he went a different route to become a folk rock singer so he has this weird cred with both crowds. One of his albums is called “Positive Songs For Negative People” which is a good description of him. He’s has a great work ethic too, since coivd he’s been doing weekly live stream gigs and the profits is shared between small music venues, roadies etc who can’t work.

Black Futures or now called Never Not Nothing after the BLM stuff last year become one of my favourite live bands before coivd, their lives shows described don’t do them justice. It feels like a mix of rave, punk mosh pit, sermon and crowd interaction.

Skindred, the biggest (and probably only) ragga metal band on the planet. I met the band once, a fan came upto me whilst talking to them and assumed I was a member so she asked me to sign her cleavage. Lol

The Flaming Lips, I just really like the weirdness of their music and live shows. You know you have been to a rock show when the band bursts out of a vagina, then they crowd surfs on an unicorn whilst a 8ft robots fights on stage.

Streetlight Manifesto, it’s easy to call them just a ska punk band but their music influences are from everywhere from jazz to Eastern European and so much more plus the lyrics are fantastic, it’s like poetry which doesn’t happen nearly enough in music.

Man, this thread could be my new home for a while. I'm HUGE into rock music.

I'm not that big into older, classic rock, as that was a bit before my time. I can appreciate it, and I do listen to it, but it's not really up there for me. I got into music during the grunge/alternative era. My first two albums were Nirvana - In Utero and Bush - Sixteen Stone. Actually, whoever was asking about grunge stuff earlier in the thread, Bush is great (just the early stuff though). I actually liked them better than Nirvana (blasphemy?). I was also huge into the Smashing Pumpkins during that time period.

From there I took the standard rock journey throughout all the fads until I found stuff that had more staying power with me: alternative/grunge > nu-metal > rap-rock > emocore (stuff like The Used, My Chemical Romance, etc.) > hardcore/post-hardcore (Glassjaw, Thursday, Poison the Well, Hopesfall - to be honest this genre still rips today, I love this stuff!) > metalcore.

Someone mentioned Killswitch Engage earlier. I also love them, but oppositely, I think I prefer Jesse to Howard. Alive or Just Breathing is far and away their best album for me. The first one with Howard was also great, but then they all became kind of samey. Not bad though, but I just didn't hear much progression from album to album. The first one with Jesse back was also great, but then it got kind of samey again. Still like them though. If you enjoy Killswitch, also check out Aftershock (which is most of the guys from Killswitch before they became Killswitch, different vocalist though - it was Adam D's brother), and also check out Serpentine Dominion, which is one of Adam D's side projects with Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse. The Serpentine Dominion album is miles better than most of the recent Killswitch stuff, IMO.

These days I like to listen to more experimental and fusion styles of rock. Stuff like Deftones and Hopesfall doesn't get old to me because of all the ambient stuff sprinkled throughout. On the heavier side, stuff like Loathe and Architects (although not really the newest Architects album). Getting really experimental, stuff like Horse The Band and Genghis Tron (both were referred to as Nintendocore at different points due to their use of electronics). Even weird pop-metal stuff like Poppy and Babymetal if I'm in the mood. I like when people try something different.

@klingki I’m with you on Babymetal, metal has for decades been kinda boring, relying on cock rock from the past or hoping that someone like Metallica will become good again (the last album was a banger though!) so it’s odd seeing the backlash to them when they have inject something new into the genre. The likes of Rob Zombie have given them their blessing so who are these people to argue with him.

I actually remember how they went mainstream, a Euro festival called Soniaphere booked them as they had a tendency to book unconventional acts (like Richard Cheese a Las Vegas style lounge crooner who covers nu-metal songs or Bill Bailey a British comedian who does the odd parody song like a dub step version of the Downtown Abbey theme) on the lower slots as Gimme Chocolate had just started going viral. People just went crazy calling them child porn etc but them playing the festival gave them legitimacy as a band in the West and have grown ever since. They actually have the record for selling the most merch ever at the legendary Wembley Arena when they played.

Also they makes such an effort with having a lore to the band, the live shows are fantastic and have legit tunes that it’s seems silly to write them off.

Anyway I’m gonna start my day by listening to one of my favourite bands Gogol Bordello!

what is your FAVORITE genre of rock?

I've never really get the whole genre thing in music, especially all the sub-genres - I mean what makes something Grunge? To me Nirvana and Pearl Jam sound nothing like each other, but they're both Grunge apparently?!?

Anyway, no idea what genres/sub-genres these are, but I guess my favourite "Rock" bands are:
Guns n Roses,
Faith No More,
Metallica,
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,
Silver Mount Zion,
Godspeed You Black Emperor,
The Mars Volta,
Arcade Fire
Queens of the Stone Age

SpringDivorce

Grew up in the 90's, so slways been a grunge fan. Got more into punk/emo in the 00's. Getting harder to impress now, when I do buy stuff it's predominantly catching up on stuff I missed first time around.
Bands I still listen to relatively regularly:

Therapy?
The Appleseed Cast
Quicksand
Cursive
Bowie
Deftones
Love Battery
Wovenhand
Planes Mistaken For Stars
Godzillionaire
Soundgarden
T. Rex
Boss Keloid
Slowdive

Got gigs with Therapy? and Jawbox finally lined up for next year, and my partner appears to be dragging me to Ocean Colour Scene in Dec.....

@Bizaster

Hey just aw your OP - thumbs up for Green River! Not keen on Rehab Doll, over polished and glammy, but Come On Down and Dry As A Bone are classics. MLB were good at what they did - I think Andrew Wood would have been massive as a performer given more time.

Huh, I never heard of Slowdive but now I'm kinda curious....@Slowdive is your name inspired by the band?

If you like Xenoblade you're obligated to add me :)

This topic is TOO much up my alley. I am a very passionate fan of hard rock, classic rock, and metal(and a lot of its sub genres like thrash and progressive) from 60's to mostly present day. Add to that I'm a hardcore fan of musicians for a wide variety of reasons. I could write the longest essays on the subject(s) but to keep it quick and simple I'll just start off with the Top 3.
They are:

Guns N'Roses
Megadeth
The Cult

***Currently waiting in huge anticipation of Billy F Gibbons new album "Hardware". It releases tomorrow but I pre-ordered a signed CD copy!!! I plan on listening to it over and over next week on the drive to Las Vegas

This fire is burning and it's out of control. It's not a problem you can stop it's Rock and Roll!!!

Bizaster

@klingki lol, welcome to your new home!

Anyways, we seem to have very similar taste. I’m very into grunge and altrock right now (also, In Utero is my fav Nirvana album!)

I should really get into Bush, though. I’ve listened to Glycerine, but nothing else, sadly.

@jump I miss Metallica too - when was that last album, 2016? It was actually pretty good, I hope their next album is just as great.

Also yeah Rob Zombie is pretty damn awesome too.

@dmcc0 yeah, I was pretty shocked at first when I found out Pearl Jam was grunge too! But then when you listen to something like Even Flow, you notice all of the distortion effects and you realize.

Also, I love some of the bands you listed! Guns ‘N’ Roses were amazing, Metallica is one of my favorite bands ever, and I sadly haven’t listened to a lot of Queens of the Stone Age but I loved their stuff with Dave Grohl.

@SpringDivorce I sadly can’t say I knew all of the bands you listed, but Bowie is an amazing musician and Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands of all time.

Also, yess, fellow Green River fan! I really do wish they didn’t get overshadowed by the big five grunge bands, they were such a unique band.
