Looks pretty terrible to me. I'm really hoping that Japan's protection prevents a high death toll.
@BedCommando: Not to sound offended, but I really don't see the logic there. Earthquakes hits based on location, not on how many people are in a location.
This is the earthquake they've been expecting for years, right? I knew that since it was long overdue it could happen at any time, but it's quite scary when it just strikes out of the blue like that...

Yeah, this is long overdue, and it'll also be a horrific reminder that Tokyo sits next to Mt Fuji, also long overdue for an eruption...
There really isn't anything that can be done to prevent a 8.9 earthquake, but Japan has done amazingly to keep the damage to such a low level, relatively speaking (compare to Christchurch, New Zealand)
