I love FLCL too, but I slightly prefer Mushi-Shi's beautifully unique, understated blend of otherworldly-ness and humanity. Not that there's really anything like FLCL either, mind.

One is a classic and possibly one of the best Harem/sci-fi/fantasy/action/adventure/comedy/drama anime ever created. The Other is a lot less classic, but still top of a class filled with a lot less adjectives (an Action/Adventure Shounen anime, with a heavier emphasis on adventure than most shonen).

It sticks to a story. In fact, if that's your problem with OVAs, then don't worry, most of them stick to a story, too. Non-sequential stories are relatively rare in anime, no matter the format.
Technically speaking, Tenchi Muyo is a Metaseries. We're actually just voting for the original 20 episode OVA version, Ryo-Ohki, but I didn't want to confuse anyone, so I just said Tenchi Muyo. Maybe that's just as confusing?
This is a tough Vote for me, but I think I'll go against Nostalgia and vote for Hunter X Hunter. I really enjoyed my time with it when I saw it last year. And as good as Ryo-Ohki was, I prefer Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo.
I loved watching that before DBZ (or was it after?). Haven't seen Hunter X Hunter, isn't it made by the guy who did Yu Yu Hakusho? If it is, I'd check it out one of these days because I loved YYH.
When it comes to Tenchi, I prefer Ryo-Ohki, with Universe coming in second. Tokyo was good, but wasn't quite in the same league as the other two, IMO.

Hunter X Hunter. Tenchi Muyo was fun when I was younger but Hunter x Hunter a third time (counting the manga and a dub of the older anime that probably only I actually enjoyed) is still a bit better than what I remember from Tenchi Muyo.
