I felt like this thread was going to be a bad idea...

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Nintendo is still doing better financially than Sony and is doing better than Microsofts' video game division. The other two are actually making less profit than Nintendo despite being much more successful so Nintendo ain't doomed, however they certainly could be doing alot better...

@Neko_Ichigofan The problem is Sony and MS video game division can afford to be doomed. Unlike Nintendo they have other divisions movies, home electronics in the case of Sony and OS and other PC stuff in the case of MS. Nintendo on the other hand doesn't so if their consoles don't sell well they are hurt big time.

@Tasuki True, but Sony is in really bad shape overall since that hack a couple years ago. They're basically on life-support...which I hope they can recover from since I'm also a fan of Sony consoles...

Nintendo makes some strange decisions, but in the last generation, I think they made one particular error that hurt them most—continuing the Wii and DS brand and just generally being too conservative.

It’s a bit ironic because both the Wii and DS were such un-conservative departures from norms at the time, and it was specifically that departure from norms that made both platforms so appealing. Despite this, I think it would have been hard for Nintendo as a company to decide differently in this regard when working on their follow-up. After doing so well, the last thing they’re thinking is abandoning the brand entirely. They bet on people coming back if they just kept doing similar things, more or less, and they were wrong.

In a sense, their mistake was in thinking more like a tech company than an entertainment company. Tech companies can afford to iterate for so long because they basically offer tools and utilities. People will simply appreciate the new abilities the new products afford. But in entertainment, novelty is important, and Nintendo basically crippled any sense of novelty that they could have had by offering platforms that looked and sounded like the old ones. You had to do light research to know that the Wii U and 3DS were meant to be big steps forward. This allowed the novelty of smartphones to intensify by comparison to the 3DS, and it was even worse for the Wii U.

This is why Nintendo can’t afford to either keep doing the same things or just copy smartphones, tablets, the PS4, and the Xbox One. They need to build a platform and supporting software that will inject novelty into the Nintendo brand again. They still have a lot of brand power, they just need to produce something people will want. I think it’s more up to Nintendo whether they pull this off, not as much the broader market.

Another big problem for Nintendo—they have clearly struggled to transition into HD game development. The Wii U has had the most droughts and most delays of any Nintendo system, and that is not a coincidence. They clearly believed they would be able to handle that work and they couldn’t. I suspect the reason is they wanted to preserve their profit margins on software as much as possible (reasonable) and underinvested in development (a problem). I guess we’ll see what their solution to that problem is with the NX.

Some of that goes farther however. Without third-party support, it’s questionable Nintendo can support their platforms by themselves. One solution is to gain strong third-party support. Another is to consolidate their platform libraries. I guess we'll see if they answer that problem with the NX as well.

@Neko_Ichigofan they may be struggling, but you have to put it in context. They are struggling in comparison to their past performances. Just last April they announced a net profit of 2.7 Billion Dollars despite a decline in net revenue. Compare that to nintendo who had a net profit of around 200 million.

@diwdiws Yes, but Sony cut like what? 40% of their positions in several of their departments? That right there is the only reason why they were in the green during this last fiscal year...
