Awesome Joe. I hope this thread stays alive through November, because I'd love to see how you guys are coming along. Also, feel free to add me as a writing buddy (this goes for anyone!) on the nano website. My user name there is also chickenbrutus.
I've got my plot and I'm doing outlining. My name on there is thelonehuman if anyone wants to add me. (It's a long story that I don't have time to type, so please don't ask)
I did this last year and got 85% to my goal of 50k. Planning on doing it again this year, trying to decide between 2 novel ideas for this year's attempt. Thanks for creating the thread, I'll add my username when I remember it.

I can't say for certain, but as for what I'm planning anyway, it won't be very family unfriendly. A few references to family unfriendly things, but I don't think much, if any, of that will actually be dramatized.
I need to make sure my parents don't find out what I'm doing. If they do, then they'll either tell me to stop (I won't, but it'll cut down on my writing time) or they'll make me let them read it (Not going to happen unless it's someday published, which isn't going to happen with this story)
Why would they tell you to stop? Are you writing something "controversial?"

No, they'll say it detracts from my time doing chores and homework, and that it's a waste of time due to my not planning to publish. Plus, my dad hates anything unrealistic, so he'd hate that I'm writing a paranormal pirate novel.
Wow, your parents sound harsh. Anything recreational shouldn't be done because you need to always be doing chores and homework? Wtf??

Hmm, I'm officially thinking about this. One question, how long does it take to type1,667 words? EDIT: Bah, over 13? I don't feel like lying with something like this.
@That depends on your typing/writing skill. I find that the contest requires about an hour a day for me, but everyone has different speeds, or even a different speed per day, depending on if something is more difficult to describe or if you're really in the moment and on a roll.

OB is right...sometimes I can blow through 1667 without even getting to what I want to say, other times I can sit there for an hour, waiting for inspiration to find me. But it's certainly doable...and on days during which you write more, you buy yourself some leeway for the days on which you don't.
Regarding the age restriction, I think that's only for creating an account. You're still welcome to participate from afar (this is my first year with an account, though I've done it three times before) and post your writings up, if you so choose. There's no restriction on participating...just in joining and using the forums and such.

Oh, they want me to be social and do recreational things, but they want me to be like them, not like myself.
My dad was a jock/tough guy in high school and my mom was popular with everybody, thus my dad expects me to be into sports and stuff full time and mom expects me to be going to a ton of parties and crap. I'm sort of a mix of both, but with a lot of my own person thrown in. I don't talk to random people at school, so my mom gets worried about me being with the same general group of people a lot and not being social. I don't play sports and stuff at school and prefer talking with my friends, so my dad thinks I'm not active enough.
Doing NaNo would make them think this would prevent me from being social and active, plus not doing my homework/chores constantly. That combined with my dad's dislike for fiction would make them probably prevent me from being allowed to do it full time. I'm sure if it was "National Sport Party Month" they'd be fine.
@Joe: I'm really sorry man, I don't know how you take that crap...
Anyway, I set up my account awhile ago, name is Popyman, so any of you can add me! Oh, I have a question: Do you have to give what you write a ending or can you just reach 50k and be done? That's what I'm worried about...
