And as a side note, if the Harry Potter novels were ever converted into half decent games, JRPG would be the ideal genre to go with. It's a party focused narrative, and the Harry Potter world was born for RPG mechanics.

In a somewhat tangent idea, rather than having the novels converted, I'd prefer to have a wRPG developer like BIoware or Obsidian put together a Harry Potter game with an original story and a focus on making your own wizarding student. I don't think anything using the same story as the books will have much chance of catching people's attention.

I also think telltale could throw together a good adventure game from the material, if someone is making a new story.

If it's a WRPG, I'd like to see a new story take place in the same world. I think if we are going to see the original story, it makes sense to play as the main characters in a JRPG format.

But a better question is why the hell hasn't there been a Harry Potter RPG yet?

I partially agree, but I also think that most of the popular games for JRPGs are the issue. Most of the populars ones until really recently have been really samey or tried to be different and failed massively. I'll also say that while I love the Mass Effect series, it's usually not because of the gameplay. At least not the combat.
I would immediately recommend The World Ends With You if you want a JRPG that does some new things.

I'd say the Final Fantasy series fits the "tried to be different and failed massively" category. FF13 was almost a different genre from (e.g) FF9. They felt the need to change the genre to move with improving hardware and in the process they sacrificed a formula that worked and didn't manage to replace it.

Yes, I've heard good things about that game (TWEWY). I'm afraid I really can't stand anything that Tetsuya Nomura does though. I think that his influence at square-enix has been almost entirely negative. I don't know how much influence he had on that game but lets just say the art style had me on guard. I admit I have an almost irrationally strong dislike of someone I've never met. But in my defense, he did once say in an interview that he thinks it's very important for a story that a character's personality can be seen through their hair style. When you put people like that in positions of power, you no longer have the right to wonder why your flagship series loses its way.

I will say they actually found a clever way around the normal problems of his stories, in that the things they focused on was what should be focused on. Explaining why at all is probably MASSIVE spoilers though.

Lol are you saying there's an actual good explanation for why every character is obsessed with fashion and their looks?

I never have and never will use the term JRPG or WRPG. They are all just RPGs to me.

To be fair, Matt Groening of the simpsons believes his characters should be immediately recognizable by their silhouette, much of which is defined by their hairstyles. Say what you will about the Simpsons, but it has definitely been a success.

Just to let you know, by original I meant "unique and different"; not the story from the books. So yes, I agree.

Well the qualities of good writing are completely different with comedy than with drama or fantasy. The characters are just a way of creating humour. Whereas in serious fiction, the characters are themselves the focus. And if their personalities can be determined by a shallow reading of their appearance, you're essentially being promised that these characters are shallow, obvious and will probably have very little character development. Unless their hairstyle happens to change.

Ha, well I'll believe that when I see it! Sounds about as plausible as saying there's a good explanation why all the Dead or Alive women have massive boobs.

Lol, not quite what I meant. I meant an explanation as to why only those women seem to appear in this fighting tournament.

The advertise for it exclusively in implant clinics. See that wasn't so hard.

No, it wasn't hard. It also wasn't plausible! Which is exactly what I'd suspect for any explanation as to why every character in a fictional world (and in the case of FF13, in the middle of a warzone) really cares about their hair.

It's really not. In drama or fantasy, humor needs to be used regularly in character interactions to have characters build believable relationships; people usually form relationships by having fun together. At the same time, comedy shouldn't have simplistic, shallow characters. Characters are probably an even greater focus in comedy, as the stories usually result from putting the characters in unusual situations and letting the characters' personalities create humor. Drama and fantasy are more likely to have stories that are more event driven and less character driven, letting the characters occasionally just follow the events instead of driving them.

Am I the only one who either thinks those videos got the core of RPGs completely wrong or else I play them completely wrong. If I understood them correctly, they said the core element that separates RPGs (both W and J) from other genres is "abnegation," or the ability to just zone out and do nothing for awhile. For me, RPGs are the one genre that I DON'T do that on. After a rough day that I just want to veg out playing something, I will play a couple levels of Mario or whatever puzzle game I have on hand or run around Hyrule for fun. I don't play RPGs as much as I used to even though they are my favorite genre because they require more time and focus on my part to really get into them. I can't just play them for a couple of minutes to pass the time and then just move on. Am I alone on this?

I'm actually with you there. I play RPGs when I'm not stressed. When I am, I just want to wreck stuff up, so I play a game like MadWorld or Force Unleashed on a console,

But there still are a lot of unifying traits. Both emphasize worldbuilding and a sense of adventure, and both have a unified means of growth. Like I said in an earlier post, it kind of makes sense to group JRPGs and WRPGs with Action-Adventure games like Zelda under what we could call an "Adventure Supergenre". As comparisons can easily drawn between all 3, and all 3 borrow ideas from one another.
