I do agree that most video game reviews tend to get way too nitpicky and misfocused on visuals over gameplay. I disagree that this is generally a major problem here on NLife. Sure, there are some exceptions, the Twilight Princess review among them, but overall, NLife is review GOLD, imo.

Oh I think N-life is real good as well. I would not be here otherwise.

But still - how many games reviews are built of the ASSUMPTION the the reader has played 20 Zelda/Megaman/Mario/etc games?

Bias slips in real easy in such an environment. Don't dumb the site down, open the site up.

Another example is lynching 'Its my birthday' in a preview write up - what kind of help is that for a mom looking for a game for her kid? On her birthday?

Ben Cartwright: You and your education.
Adam Cartwright: Education is progress! Now what have you got against it?
Ben Cartwright: I don't have anything against education - as long as it doesn't interfere with your thinking!

You've a good point, now that it's been clarified. It's true that reviews tend to be aimed at long-time fans of the series, and I can see where this would be a problem. But how can you avoid it when the author is a long-time fan as well? The only good way to write a review for newcomers to a series is to have a newcomer write it.

I also agree that the Birthday Party Bash bashing got to be WAAAAAY too much. On the other hand, I stand by my previous statements that this product is illogical for its intended purpose (any kid with a brain would rather either have a REAL birthday party, or play REAL video games at the party, like holding a Brawl tournament or something). So we aren't aimed at casual gamers...the site IS called Nintendo LIFE, which implies fanboys and fangirls who LIVE Nintendo, doesn't it?

So basically, I'm not entirely convinced it's POSSIBLE to have a video game-centered website that can properly cater to those new to gaming. They're really better off reading Amazon user reviews.

So - rebuild the site for the ladies! Too much group think/guy think.....you guys are marginalizing yourselves - that is the worst part game magazine and game sites cater to 15 year old boy frat-fart culture and they marginalize themselves!

dude, i love frat-boy humor. :/

Tell me this - Read the Twilight Princess Review on this site and convince me a girl would write that or generally be interested inreading it! It is like 'Popular Mrechanics' meet Twilight Princess, lets throw rocks at Nintendo, ignore everything good this game does, and magnify the 'complaints' or 'preferewnces' of a VERY smalll group of people - TP should be NEXT GEN!! (our vision of it)

Do you read me? Too much editorial, too little focus on FUN and FANTASY and the MAGIC of games!

am I reading this incorrectly, or are you truly attempting to say that women would prefer FUN and FANTASY and MAGIC to the nitty-gritty that was the NL Twilight Princess review? i must say I find that somewhat offensive... i thought it was a good review and a very fair score; everyone whining that it deserved a 10 needs to try and force themselves to play through it again. I can play through OoT over and over until the cows come home and not get bored, but I tried to pick up TP again for a second run, and I couldn't force myself to sit still. :/

seriously, NL's doing just fine with their reviews and articles. I don't want people blowing smoke up my rear end about FUN and FANTASY and MAGIC when i read something from the main site; I got enough of that bullcrap working in theme parks, thanks. i want to know what's good, what's bad, and any other relevant points that may influence my eventual purchase or non-purchase of the game in question, and whether or not the reviewer enjoyed themselves while playing it. the rest can happen in the forums, but leave the reviews and articles alone.

allow me to be frank, Eugene: this entire thread and your responses absolutely reek of you trying to push off your own sensibilities on us women, like you're attempting to spearhead something noble for us... but in the end, isn't this all the same kind of 'Nintendo is awesome and the Wii is doing great' crap you've been spouting for months now? like you want NL to focus on all the good points of the games they review or do articles on or whatever, and not bother with the little negative bits that crop up now and then because you think us womenfolk don't want to hear it either? sorry to disappoint, but I know I do want to hear those things... :/

so what? you may as well say that kids are the target audience of the DS/DSi and Wii, and therefore NL should focus on writing articles only for people who were born within the past ten to thirteen years and therefore were not around to play the original Zelda/MegaMan/Mario/etc. games. how does that in any way refer to gearing the website toward women?

Here is the bottom line - EVERY review, news story whatever - the author at Nintendo Life should read it and ask his/her self - "Is this something my mother would read and enjoy - if she were not my mother?"

in terms of foul language, i would agree with you (not that NL has a problem with that lol), but i do not understand how this in any way would help to open this site up to gamer women... all it would do is help to open up this site to older women.

also, i'm kinda loling at the idea of my folks (mother or father) following me around the internet. if NL (as it is now) is the worst place they wind up, they can consider themselves very, very lucky.

@Chicken_Brutus: i was attempting to find an image of a headcrab plushie on photobucket to reply with, but then I found this:
Untitled
... in other words, if you're the headcrab victim this year, Chicken_Brutus, does that mean Adam's going as the headcrab? if so, I think you've got the '09 NL Couples' Costume Contest in the bag. :3

Black Dragon, please do not talk about the love Chicken and I share like you understand it. It is difficult making an inter-species relationship work as well as ours has. We are going to win that contest with or without your support!

Come on, friends,

can you get pawned by a stereotype?

@orlick: What stereotype? Only one spouting stereotypes around this thread is YOU! Theblackdragon simply pointed out that she does not fall into that retarded stereotype and is in fact at least slightly offended by it (if I read that properly). And I don't blame her at all...I HATE cultural stereotypes...ESPECIALLY the ones regarding gender (I am FAR from your stereotypical man, and get EXTREMELY tired of being reminded how I'm "supposed" to be)!

I think at this point, we SHOULD be able to agree that there's really nothing wrong with the site the way it is...and we have a real live woman in agreement with that fact!

Chicken Brutus, your story of love against the odds, fill's us all with hope. I hope you prove everybody wrong, and discover that Adam fit's quite snugly upon your face. Love ftw!

Back on topic, if I was a girl I doubt I'd be on here, that sexiest game character thread (in which I posted a picture of Samus WITH powersuit) was cringe-worthy and probably didn't help attract lady members. @all the ladies on here (all 6 of 'em), I hope we (the 100's of dumb boys) are behaving and don't offend you too often.

EDIT: Also, orlick, I don't understand what you mean about the writing used by game websites, they tend to be written by gamers, for gamers. I don't often see quotes like "if you're a girl you'll like this one" or "this is a bit too girly for boys to be interested in". And if it is slightly geared toward males so what, d you know how many girl infested Wii&DS ads we've had to sit through recently. I love Animal Crossing, but when I saw this...

...I wanted to barf! As I'm sure most lady-gamers did. While I'm here, some more pain for ya...
