Topic: In Remakes We Trust?

If this topic has been made before, then feel free to lock it. But I could not find any topic related to this subject.

Anyway, I made this topic to read everyone's opinions about remakes. Now I am fine with some remakes, but I do have a problem when if feels like remakes almost completely overrides original content (like right now on the 3DS).

It also depends on the game. For example, Final Fantasy VII has aged horribly in the graphical department and could certainly receive some kind of remake. A game like Chrono Trigger on the hand is perfectly fine because the graphics have not age and therefore that game does not need a remake (the DS version was a port and not a remake). Also, some remakes can make the original game's graphics worse instead of better in some cases (like Final Fantasy IV DS for example).

There are some games that remakes are a huge improvement (Like most of the Final Fantasy remakes), some remakes that are about the same in greatness as the originals (Like the Pokemon remakes), but there are some remakes that are worst than their original counterparts (Super Mario All-Stars, for example).

Remakes are mostly meant to show people who missed out the first time what they were missing, while appealing to their modern tastes.

I'm on the fence. It's disappointing that companies like Square Enix are pretty much living off remakes. Their Final Fantasy 1&2 remakes were pretty good, Final Fantasy 3 I haven't played much of yet but I prefer the 2D of the previous games. I agree Final Fantasy 7 and pretty much all Playstation games have aged horribly, most of the games looked pretty ugly when they were new too. I like remakes in that it gives you access to old games on current systems and while I like the old graphics the enhancement is sometimes nice given the resolutions new devices are running at.

I think one of the biggest problems is price. I often go back and play old games I've played to death but I'm surely not going to shell out full price for a remake of a game I've played to death or already own.

I'm fine with remakes, but I'm annoyed that so few are really REmakes. More often than not developers use the word "remake" describe a slightly enhanced port. There's one game I always think of when explaining this, and that's Metroid: Zero Mission. It's the perfect example of what a remake should be. Not only did they update the gameplay and graphics, they also completely redesigned planet Zebes with new areas, bosses, and weapons, and they even extended the game beyond the ending of the original.

When you compare Zero Mission to most of the remakes that come out these days, it really makes them seem pointless.

I actually like remakes, like SoulSilver and the new play control games.

I think the first wave of 3DS games was mostly remakes but that might soon starting this summer.

Also, Ocarina 3D looks much better than the original

This. Just to give out a number i'm not willing to spend more than 15€ on an update of graphics or controls in a game i already own.

What i like most are remakes of games that have never been available on the console. (like Klonoa on the Wii)
Anf if there's no extra content it makes it easier for me to say "I can live without out. If the price point isn't right and it will go out of stock i'll have no regrets." Extra content puts some kind of pressure on me.

And yes, i think for games like Metroid: Zero Mission we should use the term re-imagination because it really is different to most of the other remakes.

All the best games should be remade. Nintendo are once again the masters at this with Mario Kart and Zelda. Same game every time but with new features to entice new players.

I love remakes, whether I've already owned them or not. Most remakes are games that haven't been out in ages anyway, and the updated graphics and fantastic new content Nintendo adds to its remakes makes it worth full price.

I can see where remakes would feel repetitive if the company kept dishing them out, but I for the most part like them. There are a few remakes that really change and expand on the original, such as Super Mario 64 DS. In that one, you can play as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, or Wario in most of the levels and there are unlockable minigames as well. That's not counting additional boss battles and new levels. Other good examples are the Donkey Kong Country remakes on the Gameboy Advance and Kirby Superstar Ultra, especially the latter since it added a whole bunch of extra content. So what I'm saying is that I think remakes are fine if they bring something new to the tried and true formula.

This is basically everything else I have to say.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Am I the only one who loves FFVII's graphics? it's got a fantastic art style that compliments the technical capabilities that Square had with the console at that point and the whole game is styled around this. Upping the technical quality on the graphics is not going to improve the game, the game is remembered as a classic because that's what it is. The Advent Children film sucks, it is technically impressive but the visuals lack the style and charm that were present in the game and I'm fairly sure this is what would happen should FFVII get a dreaded remake into, it's available on PSN (if the store's up yet, I've been too busy to check) so is playable in the intended way on PS3 and PSP easily, so requires no remake to bring it to audiences who never found it first time round.
