I know a lot of gamers want new games and think there are way too many remasters of older games. Here’s why I want more of them:
1. A lot of older games’ graphics are dated and a remaster gives them a fresh coat of paint and some even have extra features like trophies to make it a better experience on the current system.
2. It gives gamers an opportunity to play a game they missed or didn’t complete when the original version came out. For me, I was able to finally complete Luigi’s Mansion, Kingdom Hearts 1-2, Final Fantasy 7-12 and Super Mario Sunshine thanks to the re-releases.
3. Some older releases are very expensive and a re-release allows gamers to pick up the older games on a discount. Buying Super Mario 3D All Stars and Kingdom Hearts the story so far is much cheaper than buying the original games separately.
4. It’s easier to play the older games on the current generation system in HD instead of taking out or buying an old console to play them with graphics meant for CRT TV on a HDTV.
5. It allows young gamers to experience games that came out before they were born so they don’t miss out on the classics.
In short, I think it’s important to re-release classic games just like movies like Back to the Future, The Godfather and Jaws get re-released. It gives young gamers the opportunity to experience the classics for the first time and older gamers a chance to finish a game they never completed back in the day. Remasters and new games can co-exist to satisfy gamers with different preferences.
I agree, I didn’t have the N64, GameCube, PS3, PS2 or SNES when growing up so without remasters it would have been hard for me to get into series like Final Fantasy. The 3D All-Stars example is an decent one but it was a very poor collection of three very good games. It was a very barebones package overall.
But yeah, no new interesting franchises, or refreshing entries these days.
I mean, the biggest game of last year was a new entry in a Nintendo series that did some interesting, dramatic changes, and their most recent new IP of note, one of the biggest new RPGs in ages, is their attempt to make a fitness game an RPG.
@Slowdive Nah there's been a few new things over the last 5ish years like LABO, Ring Fit, Ever Oasis, ARMS, Splatoon, Astral Chain, BoxBoy, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., Sushi Striker, 1-2-Switch, Miitopia, Snipperclips, Flip Wars, The Stretchers etc. Plus some great spin offs like Star Fox Guard, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Captain Toad as well as games that were just spin offs like Metroid Prime: Federation Force.
Ninty are putting out new ideas but for every hit like Splatoon and Ring Fit Adventure there's also Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. and Ever Oasis that sadly makes no impact. I think people are just getting worked up about how slow 2020 was, Ninty have already really surpised me this year with that DC Super Hero Girls game coming out in a few months. I've got no interest in it but it's not something I would have thought they'd make.
As those of us born in the 80s slide out of the marketing demographic into a new one (parents/families, retro/nostalgia, more disposable income than sense) it will be good to have more remakes and collections be made as many in their 20s and younger have no experience with these games but they still shape current games/long running franchises.
The issue is there is so much licensing red tape that it is hard for a lot of smaller games to get that second chance.
Personally though I wish the gamecube era would get some remakes. I feel like older games can just be rereleased and 7th gen games still look fine with a resolution bump.

@Slowdive 2017 was so strong because Nintendo was stockpiling games from 2015 onwards because 2014's Wii U lineup wasn't enough to save the Wii U so they just abandoned Wii U. A lot of Wii U projects moved from Wii U to Switch so in a sense on the Nintendo front you could consider 2017-2021 for Switch to be mostly salvaging the Wii U's failure.
@Ryu_Niiyama@CactusMan Love games from that generation as well. A lot of the games hold up pretty darn well when presented in HD. Rather have these, than the so-called "impossible" ports, which are always compromised.
The PS2 titles seem to get the best remaster treatment if they are given it to begin with. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster with a thirty minute audio drama and the International sphere grids, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, with a reorchestrated soundtrack, SMT3: Nocturne with what seems to be a raft of tweaks, like an easy mode, (hopefully a remastered soundtrack) full voice acting in English and Japanese, a save anywhere feature, and more.
I don't have a ton of experience with remakes/remasters, but I do love Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy. Greatly updated graphics, a couple new levels, and Time Trials for Crash 1 and 2. If only you could toggle the classic music on...
If done correctly then they are a welcome addition. The remakes of Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 are great examples; it honestly felt like you were playing how the felt in your mind back in the 90s. However, something like Wind Waker HD, whilst having some great quality of life features (fast sail for example) felt less necessary, as the GameCube original has aged very well.
Whilst a new paint job is nice I would honestly just settle for up ressing the graphics and leaving the rest alone (aside from any issues with modern controllers). That way classic games can still be enjoyed but on modern screens. After all, classic Disney films are still great, even if all that is done is to clean up the image and sound.
‘You swapped three different N64 games for Pokemon Stadium? Where’s your pride? Your dignity?!?
If remakes or remasters are done well then they can probably completely replace the original for me. (e.g. Shadow of the Colossus on PS4, DMC HD Collection, Crash N. Sane Trilogy, Persona 2 Innocent Sin on PSP)
It's also because of specific remasters or collections that I was able to experience specific game series all the way through for the first time, specifically with stuff like Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD on PS3/Vita, the MGS HD Collection and the Kingdom Hearts collections
