Good denizens of NintendoLife, I come to you with a question. Again. I figured there's people around here better at these hardware shenanigans better than I am.
So I've been on the upgrade rampage of my aging PC. Every component has been replaced over the last few months, asides from the harddrive. Unfortunately 140Gb just isn't cutting it any more now that it can run software and games on the shinier end of the spectrum, and with just 3.8Gb to spare, I decided it was time to get a bigger 1Tb drive. This comes with a bit of an issue - I can't reinstall Windows 7 from scratch as I no longer have access to the product key (it was provided through a university scheme, but as I no longer study there my account to retrieve said key has been deactivated), and all I have on a physical disk is an old copy of Windows XP... the product key for which is on a sticker on top of my old PC case, which years of paperwork and coffee mugs has worn away.
So, I was wondering if it was possible to transfer everything from my old drive to my new one, including the Windows installation, preferably without having to reinstall all my software (another issue is that the majority of my software has been downloaded through Steam, and with a 10Gb per month download limit, it'd take a hell of a long time to retrieve). I have the physical disk for Windows 7, so if I then have to run a Windows Repair after transfer then that's not an issue.
Alternatively, and I know this makes me seem years out of the loop since I last tried it, is it possible to install software to D:/ (with the new harddrive as a secondary) and run it from there? The last time I tried that was on Windows 98, I'll admit, but I recall it not working and Windows shouting at me about things that should be on C:/. Then I can have just Windows on my 140Gb drive and all (or most) of my software on the new 1Tb one.
