Topic: Getting blocked in the comments.

I know I've been blocked by at least 2 people. One was because I gave some unpopular opinions on an "Unpopular Gaming Opinions" thread (shocking, I know...). The other I've genuinely no idea why they've blocked me, but it could just be because I tend to be a negative git in the comment sections.

At first being blocked bothered me a bit, because I realised I'd upset someone, but you're always going to offend someone; it's impossible not to. So now it doesn't really bother me.

I personally have never blocked or ignored anyone, because I prefer to hear all opinions and see the full conversation in the comments.

I think I've been blocked by one person.

They were/are a prominent enough poster (across here & Push Square) that I thought they had just left until about a week ago when I saw they were listed as the most recent commenter on a couple of threads (and other users were "@" them, so in a conversation), but lo & behold their comments were nowhere to be seen for me, and I don't have anyone ingnored/blocked, so it has to be on their end.

It took me a long time to think what it was I could have done (most of my posts are in the movie or anime threads & I tend to not rock the boat), but then I remembered one of the last times I saw them comment they seemed to be making a kinda snide remark directed towards a comment I made (though they didn't "@" me directly) on a Spider-Man 2 article on PS back in December, so that was probably it (the user tends to get really get caught up in activist/progressive topics, and I thought my comment was pretty nuanced, but apparently not enough for them?).

@jump There is a short list (but more than one) NL posters known for blocking but I think this thread refers to around 10 different blockers. The thread has been good at talking about stories about blocking in general rather than specific people even though some of them are guessable.

@FishyS True I know at least 2...

Space and Games are similar. Space is endless and new stuff is out there waiting to be discovered. Games are always being made but the creativity is different from one game to another and so many more ideas still haven't been imagined or created yet. (That came out better than expected lol)

Why are there no comments in this thread yet?

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Can't you make it so that I don't get notified of a topic getting replied by the person who blocked me? Like, make it look like it's been read and that I really was the last person to post there? Otherwise it's just using my time.

I've recently realised I've been blocked by a couple of users, when I saw some @ replies to comments I couldn't see. I thought the original comments had been deleted until I refreshed my browser and had to login again and noticed some comments had disappeared.
I'm not really bothered by it, I don't think I've ever seen any comments by the users that I'd really miss and, while I don't know exactly why they blocked me, everyone is entitled to their opinion and it's unlikely we were going to be friends anyway.
On the whole topic of ignore vs block, I didn't realise there were different levels of it until this happened recently. After giving it some thought, I think I'd rather be blocked than ignored. Ignored means someone is OK with me seeing their comment, but not with me responding, which seems one-sided and childish to me. So I'd rather not see the conversation at all than it be one-way traffic.

I don't think I'll be using either function myself, the only comments that would provoke me to that sort of response would likely be removed by a mod or get the user banned anyway.

@-wc-
I really enjoy seeing your comments on here, so don't take it to heart if some others don't.

You don't need to be logged in to read the forums and if you're not logged in, they won't know that you're blocked.

I personally don't think you have to circumvent the system of the website just to see context for a post. It defeats the block function if someone can just log out, look at the post, then comment- does it not?

People also do not realize that the Block system prevents your posts to be Reported by the users.

Sure, people might argue that if the posts are so "wrong" other users will report them but that is not the point

I think that the old Ignore system was just fine. If you want to know if someone is ignoring you, just put a red icon next to their name indicating that you have been ignored and let it be.

Those "invisible" posts are unnecessary, especially if you can see other users replaying to them

I dig your style too, man. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

appreciate your sentiment, here, and im coming around. this thread is proving to me, all the real ones are still here! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

@-wc- Hopefully the thread won't be locked again but there is no avoiding the fundamental fact that, by construction, the entire site is fully open to the entire world. That is one of the things which makes the block function odd and is pretty fundamental to the discussion. As well as one of the many things which differentiates this site from social media ( social media is often referenced in these type of conversations regarding block functions).

There are no private messages on this site, no private anything really except your sign-in info. No friending. I believe the only privacy option is whether to share your list of games to people so I guess that is the one thing block can truly hide, although I doubt anyone has ever been blocked here for that purpose.

@FishyS

sure, but it was beside the point of my OG post entirely. I personally dont care to circumvent the block function nor do I care to discuss it here. If y'all want to talk about that, please make another thread for it and hold your breath it doesn't get locked.

I agree that this is an open forum, not social media, and I don't like the block function itself either, for the reasons you say. โœŒ๏ธ

I personally find it comical seeing replies to comments that I can't see.

Sometimes I make a game of it by guessing what the original post could be.

And I only cost ยฃ25 an hour to attend parties.

The point is that it's a publicly accessible site that doesn't require you to be logged in, so people should bear that in mind when posting. As such, the block function doesn't really do anything useful beyond putting people on ignore.

I'd agree that you shouldn't attempt to engage with people who have blocked or ignored you though. You might not like their reasons, or even know what they are, but you should still respect their choice. It'd be, at the very least, rude, and probably ban-worthy.

What if instead of hiding their posts a block just removed the reply and quote buttons. If it did that I would have far less of an issue because clearly the only reason to do it is to say you don't wish to engage with that person. Hell, make this a function of the ignore and don't have two tiers at all!
