Topic: Getting blocked in the comments.

I've noticed that some of my most recognizable long-time commenters have apparently blocked me. I use the comments section alot on this site, and almost never the forums. I know I can be confrontational at times, but I try to always keep it civil and within constructive conversation. One in particular, I know why, but a couple others, I'm a little surprised! I have to admit, it kind of hurts.

but this isnt (just) about me. I have a couple questions for y'all: do you guys get blocked? Do you care? Can people who've blocked you in the comments see you in the forums, or is it site wide?

I find it fascinating partly because I've ignored people that I think are trolling, abusive, etc, but I've never ever outright blocked anyone. And, I generally go back and end up un-ignoring people anyway.

I know I'm being overly sensitive to let it get to me, but its weird feeling like I'm just blocked by these folks, and that's that. I see people replying to them still, and I guess its the same for them, but otherwise we are ghosts.

anyway, i thought it might be something to talk about. I hope its not against the rules to bring up, or a tired topic for y'all by now. I hope you all know that I love this community. It's the only online interaction I still participate in, for real. ❤️

I dont think I have ever been blocked but I wouldn't know how to check if I have been haha.

I wouldn't know why people have blocked you, I mean I dont agree with you all the time but I have never thought of blocking you or anyone else for that matter.

Space and Games are similar. Space is endless and new stuff is out there waiting to be discovered. Games are always being made but the creativity is different from one game to another and so many more ideas still haven't been imagined or created yet. (That came out better than expected lol)

Amusingly, as your comment is the thread starter, it is available for all to see.

The ignoring / blocking is site-wide. It's just an internet forum, so I don't take it personally at all. Hiding the comments of users that you don't want to see makes it a more pleasant experience, although there has been some really interesting discussions on blocking disrupting threads.

@-wc- I thought about blocking you after i saw this just to mess with you. But you’re one of my favorite commenters , so i just couldn’t bear to do it.
It happens to me. It doesn’t usually bother me. If blocking me is what they need to do to improve their lives, then that’s cool.
I did recently get blocked by someone who’s comments i enjoy and she never gave me a warning and so also no chance for reconciliation. It’s a bummer, but if i caused her that much mental anguish, without intending to, then i respect her decision. I saw you two arguing in a post, and i think she blocked you too.
I got blocked by some dude after telling him i didn’t think it was fair to compare Punch Out to other fighting games, as they are vastly different. When i registered my recent , new account, dude blocked me on sight again.
I didn’t feel our first encounter contained any disrespect or conflict other than the difference of opinion.
People are just passionate about games, ya know?

@GalaxicGlobe The easiest indicator of being blocked is missing comment numbers. For example if you blocked someone, for the person you blocked they wouldn't see comment #2 but instead it jump straight from #1 to #3.

Alternatively, just look at the page with an incognito window.

You don't need to be logged in to read the forums and if you're not logged in, they won't know that you're blocked.

hey, thanks for the response, all! I will get back here to reply more directly here in a bit. ✌️

I've been blocked by a few users but it doesn't bother me.
It's just people that used to wind me up like anti-matter, on the plus side I'm not drawn into as many arguments now I cant see them

This thread was locked last time I looked, did the mods just change their minds?

it WAS locked and I'm shocked to see my thread unlocked again! thanks mods!

While I appreciate everyone's input so far, lets stay on topic and not discuss ways to get around the block function any further, okay? This was the reason it got locked before, and I'd like to respect their wishes. And besides, this was not at all the feedback I was asking for when I made the post (though I don't think the users offering the info had ill intent towards me or anyone else ✌️)

In one case as I mentioned, we were having a spirited political (more like social/economic) debate, and they did allude to blocking me, and I kept pushing. Mind you, I of course thought my points were valid, and they kept pushing back, and in my opinion we both kept it on this side of civil. But alas, blocked. I always liked this user, and I see replies to their comments all the time still, and it makes me sad. but I will survive lol. 👍

Other people, idk! One in particular I noticed yesterday, a fellow Earthbound fan, that I've chatted with in comments dozens of times over the years, was the catalyst for this specific thread. I just don't know what I did to them!

I appreciate what you said. I am opinionated, but I try not to offend people or be overly forceful with my opinions. That being said, If I feel that I have facts on my side, I will argue a point to it's logical conclusion, and I feel that some people are offended by that. personally, I love arguing a point back and forth, as long as new ideas and facts keep being brought to the table, and it doesnt boil down to personal attacks. 👍👍

wow that is... amusing. 😅 well I hope those people understand where I'm coming from, here.

I'm not so much taking it personally (maybe a little,) but feel like my Nintendolife experience is now incomplete, without these users in particular. It's a bit silly but they are major/daily contributors like myself and I enjoyed seeing their opinions on things even when we werent interacting directly.

I feel that a simple "ignore" would have sufficed, if they didn't want to hear from me again! Alas.

I'll get past it but its harder when I see the replies to comments I cant see. It's like a tiny little breakup, haha 😂

thanks for your input and info, friend 👍

"I thought about blocking you after i saw this just to mess with you. But you’re one of my favorite commenters , so i just couldn’t bear to do it."

well obv I appreciate that greatly, and I feel the same way 😊 I would REALLY be thrown a loop, then, as I've always felt we had alot in common, and plenty of healthy interactions, here!

"It happens to me. It doesn’t usually bother me. If blocking me is what they need to do to improve their lives, then that’s cool."

that seems like a healthy way to look at it. 🙂

"I did recently get blocked by someone who’s comments i enjoy and she never gave me a warning and so also no chance for reconciliation. well, you definitely know then who it is, and to avoid feeling as though we are sub-tweeting this person I will just leave it there. its a shame, I really like this user and I see traces of their comments all the time now.

I think I remember this encounter, maybe! it's ringing a bell. for the record I'm with you, punch out is more of a rhythm/timing/puzzle game than a 1 on 1 fighter.

Thanks for weighing in, I felt a bit better after reading your comment 😊

Anti-Matter is a force of nature! I disagree with everything they say but I love seeing a sort of alternate reality gamer with exactly the opposite take on every topic as I would have 😂 I'm glad they are here but I can see where you are coming from too.

I'm glad you are here, too 🙂 thanks for weighing in.

They way I look at it, many people are obsessed with having their "safe spaces". And the blocking feature gives them the opportunity to create their bubble that is safe from the "evil" of other people.

I think this is only thinning their skin even more

"Learn, adapt, overcome" has become "Avoid, block, pretend something does not exist"

And some people wonder why "their" version of this forum has become an echo chamber

@-wc- I appreciate the reply!

Yeah…

“I think I remember this encounter, maybe! it's ringing a bell. for the record I'm with you, punch out is more of a rhythm/timing/puzzle game than a 1 on 1 fighter.”

I always just call it a boss rush. But yeah it is a timing game and more of a rhythm game, and given there is no actual movement between the two combatants and there is no multiplayer, it’s quite different from fighters.

”Thanks for weighing in, I felt a bit better after reading your comment”

You’re welcome and good to read!

I like the ignore functionality, but as blocking impacts the user experience of other people, and some use it without much provocation, I'm still of the opinion that it should be gated behind mod/admin intervention. Aside from cases of persistent harassment or trolling that circumvents the ignore function, there's little reason to block anyone.

Alas, the staff seems to disagree.

@Ralizah

I like your points, and I tend to agree. OTOH that does sound like alot of work on their part, depending on the volume of "block requests" on a given day. I can see both sides.

again though, I would agree to simply not reply to these users if we could reconcile and get the blocked comments back. it does feel extreme to poke holes in the continuity of the comments over minor disagreements or even heated arguments, and now that I can't reach them at all it does feel hopeless. ah well!

thanks for weighing in. ✌️

I’ve made good use of the ignore button before, but it doesn’t look like anyone has been upgraded/downgraded to ‘blocked’.

I can’t really see what blocking would accomplish that ignoring doesn’t, and it’s a bit more fiddly anyway. Thankfully I’ve had little reason to even consider it.

@-wc- I doubt people would use it as much if it wasn't easily accessible. Ignoring will accomplish what they want without degrading the user experience for others the vast majority of the time.

Most people can't manage power responsibly, which is why they shouldn't have access to it.
