I only skimmed through it, but the Microsoft conference seemed to be a good presentation of games I don't care about. Most of the interesting games are either Microsoft's continued apology tour to indies, or are being saved for Gamescom.

Hololens has potential but unless it's straight up bundled with a console, I have my doubts on it living up to potential.

Holo Lens will have a lot of other uses outside of gaming though. That's where it will shine.

Unfortunately, based on Kinect, I don't think Microsoft will want that.

They showed Holo Lens for non-gaming stuff first in the initial reveal. It's a tech piece, not a gaming accessory (though it can be used for that).

Eh, still too much shooty stuff for my liking, there were only a handful of games there that interested me. For all of their talk of going in a more game centric direction they really haven't changed all that much.

That Minecraft demo was neat though.

It's the exact opposite of the Kinect. They extensively showed business/home use of the HoloLens at it's reveal, that got me hooked, not even the gaming possiblities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6sL_5Wgvrg

On a side note, there was a very notable lack of a certain multiplat from Microsoft's conference this year - Call of Duty. That game is always featured in Microsoft's conference. It not being there I think is confirmation that Sony now has the CoD deal, on top of the deal for Battlefront.

Could you imagine the internet meltdown if that ever happened?

FINALLY SOMEONE NOT NAMED NINTENDO CREATED A MEANINGFUL ITERATION ON THE DUALSHOCK 1.

It's been nearly 20 years, it's about time someone learned how to innovate.

Huh?

But that's not a Dualshock 1, nor looks like one, it's a modified XBox One Controller, which is why I said 'huh?'

Aside from maybe the Gamepad and the Steam controller, the last iteration of the NES-SNES controller lineage that actually brought meaningful evolution was the Dualshock 1. There has been stagnation for a very long time.

Microsoft seems to be adding new buttons, adding customization, and, I think that new D-pad may be touch receptive.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

Those new buttons and customization are only new to standard console controllers. Third party controllers have had those features in the past. I also think the trigger buttons on the back were a meaningful evolution between the DS1 and this elite controller.

Microsoft's E3 wasn't bad at all. Pretty exciting at times. It gets a B from me. There are problems, though.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Microsoft Conference Thoughts:

  • ReCore looked cool. Too bad that CGI trailers mean nothing this day and age.
  • The Xbox One is getting backwards compatibility, which should have been included at launch. Also, the on-stage demo looked awful, with what was definitely a below-30 FPS count.
  • If that pro controller works as intended it would be pretty cool. Although what's going to seal the deal is whether or not the price is reasonable.
  • Fallout 4 is going to support mods on consoles? That's really cool. It doesn't really change the fact that video game consoles are becoming more and more like PCs, but at least they're starting to adopt the good parts of PC gaming rather than all of the nonsense.
  • Dark Souls III got announced in this conference? Alright, I guess my prediction was wrong. I'm sure we'll see more of the game before E3 is done.
  • The indie showcase was cool, with Ashen looking particularly neat.
  • Oh crap, Microsoft is doing Early Access on consoles. If they don't know what they're doing (hint; they probably don't), then Microsoft is in for a world of backlash. Also, Dean Hall was a horrific choice to be the spokesperson for this program considering that he abandoned his one and only game.
  • Oh hey, I was right; Rare announced a new game and it looked like nobody was happy. Also, the fact that a game compilation was at the end of Rare's initial teaser probably made some people want to throw their computers off of a building.
  • Valve is teaming up with Microsoft for VR stuff? Really? That seems like the opposite of what Valve would do.
  • Why was The Coalition trying to pass off Gears of War 4 as some sort of survival horror experience? I mean, I'm in support of the franchise doing something else than the traditional, 'Space Marines Shoot Disgusting Aliens In The Face' approach, but there was no indication of the game actually doing anything survival horror-y.

Overall, the conference was interesting. I was surprised more than I thought I would be, but not all of those surprises were good. The thing I'm going to take away the most is that Microsoft is doing Early Access for consoles, so I guess if I had to choose how it ranked I would put it at a net negative?

The new controller looks to be $100, I'll probably write down more comphensive thoughts when I rewatch it after the EA confrence.

Something seems to be wrong with Xbox live, they're newsite is down, and I can't see my non downloaded games list right now. My guess it's due to the update coming tonight for the BC preview,

Also I haven't gotten a Gears beta code yet.

WAT!

Nice I think Nintendo will top it for me, Xbox is doing a smart thing with stretching out announcements and releases but man does it suck for hype.

Honestly if someone were buying a next gen system an Xbox One and EA All Access isn't a bad way to start without buying any other games.

edit: The Gears 4 trailer was probably unexciting to most but i'm glad to see the game go back to the Gears 1 horror shooter roots.

Shoot, between Sea of Thieves, Backward's Compatibility, and Rare's back catelog on one disk, I'm kinda sorta maybe tempted to get an Xbox One, especially since it'll also have Sunset Overdrive and Killer Instinct.

No seriously, not only did Rare make an interesting game for the first time since Viva Pinata, it appears to be the game I wanted AC4: Black Flags to be. Oh well, You win some, you lose some.
